Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

Yup, I said it. I don’t like the band that Mr. Cardigan picked out for me. Originally, I felt terrible saying that, but I’ve come to terms with it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a gorgeous ring. But it looks pretty ridiculous with my engagement ring. Like… I kind of feel like I tilt a little to the left side every time I try it on.

You know what the worst part is about me not liking it? It’s made of heirloom diamonds from Mr. C’s great aunt. Sigh.

I know, I’m a terrible person. Although, in my defense, after Mr. Cardigan showed it to me, he admitted that he didn’t really think I’d like it and he just went for it because they already had the diamonds. To be honest, I really wish he wouldn’t have done that because then I wouldn’t have had to deal with all of the guilt of not being happy with what he gave me. But, it’s over and done with now, and it’s time to figure out a solution!

Here is what my engagement ring looks like on my hand alone:

I Don’t Like My Wedding Band. : wedding austin rings 15 1

And here is what it looks like with the band Mr. C got me:

I Don’t Like My Wedding Band. : wedding austin rings 25 2

Eep! That’s a lot of bling, right? And, you see, I can handle bling. I love it, in fact. But the type-A tendencies in me could not handle the way the four stones looked against the three stones. It just doesn’t look right. AND, it really bothered me that the band is as tall as my engagement ring! It just felt so huge and bulky on me, and as much as I tried to love it, I just couldn’t. I even worked out with it on one night, just trying to get used to seeing it on my hand, but to no avail. It just wasn’t happening.

Mr. Cardigan was very supportive of me wanting to get another band – like I said, he knew I wouldn’t be a huge fan of this one. There was only one major snag in the whole thing: we’re broke college students and totally can’t afford to buy another wedding band! We talked about it and looked online for hours, and we even went into a jewelry store once to try on bands, but quickly left when the saleslady made us feel like if we didn’t buy the band she wanted us to buy she was going to kick us out of the store. She literally didn’t even let me try on the one that I liked because she said it wouldn’t look good! Ridiculous!

So, dejected, we left the jewelry store with no more ideas on what to do. Mr. C said he thought I should just get a plain white gold band because it’s the cheapest option and it looks good with my ring, but I wanted diamonds, dang it! And so… the search continued!

Did your SO get a band for you along with your e-ring? Did you like it? If you didn’t, what did you do?

My fiance didnt! He bought a 1.7 carat princess solitaire and it didnt look great with ANYTHING! Nothing wanted to fit against the band and it looked funny.

From there–we put my diamond into a more dramatic setting (another $500 eeeeek!).
And then finding the band was easy, because it finally fit against the e-ring!

Good luck Miss Cardigan! Hope you get the band you long for!

Aw I’m sorry you don’t like your ring. I hope you figure out a solution you do like. Mr. K knows I’m way too picky for him to pick out anything for me! It’s pretty much guaranteed I wouldn’t like it.

Go to Kohl’s (if you have one). I had been drooling over diamond and millgrain bands for the longest time but I didnt want to dish out $500 for a wedding band (I know that is relatively cheap but I digress.)
So I went to Kohl’s one day (which I never go there) and lo-and-behold at the jewelry counter was the ring of my dreams.
It was 345…but it was “power hour” so it was half off, then there was another 20% off and then another 15% off…
So…I got my band for about $96. Real gold, real diamonds, everything!
Don’t be discouraged…

I wish my fiance had picked out my wedding ring! I love my engagement ring and can normally make decisions on the spot but I could not do that with my wedding ring. I had to go back and try it on again and again. I still don’t know if we are buying the right one. I know some people will have something to say about it because it doesn’t mach my ring exactly but it does compliment it….oh well. good luck!!

You can make it work. What about wearing your engagement ring as a right-hand ring? Then you’ll be nice and balanced instead of leaning to the left!

I had a similar issue at the jewelers! The woman spoke to me like I was crazy for not wanting a platinum eternity band, and kept saying that nothing else would work with my ring. Rrgg…

Maybe wear the e-ring on your right hand? Both rings are very nice, just not together - I would be bothered by the 3 stone / 4 stone thing also. hopefully you got it all figured out! We are going to get mine made soon and pick his out - I can’t wait!

I’m sorry that you don’t like your band :( I know as an Aggie, you are probably going to be wearing your Aggie ring on your right hand, so that might night be an option for your e-ring. I really hope you are able to find something you love, that will go with your e-ring and your budget!

My band is a match of my e-ring band, just a little bit thinner.

I ended up returning the first band he bought for the same reason. It just didn’t look right!! So don’t feel bad… you’ll be wearing these rings for the rest of your life, you have to love them.
Here’s an idea… all the bling is great, just lovely. It does look pretty bulky all together though. Here’s an idea… Using the heirloom diamonds seems important to you. How about replacing the two side diamonds next to your center stone with either 2 or all 4 of your fiance’s aunts diamonds. Then look into returning the 2 original diamonds from your engagement ring. Use the money or store credit to pick out a band that you love and matches fabulously. Hopefully it won’t cost you much more $$… maybe you’ll even come out on top!

That happened to my FI. He didn’t like the wedding band I originally wanted him to get..Finally he fessed up and we chose something we both liked, thank gosh we didn’t order the other one yet. I think everyone has to be understanding because its a ring you are going to wear forever.

That ring is bling-ing! It reminds me of 4 babies–4 girls in your future you could give each one a ring? Ha

For me since my ring came from FI’s grandmother and wasn’t exactlyyy what I would have picked (but now LOVE) I made it clear I wanted to pick my wedding band. I got exactly what I wanted, picked it up last week and am over the moon!

i love @nikkiw’s idea as well!

Definitely put the band on your left hand, engagement ring on right. Everyone is doing it these days!

I was thinking the same thing as some of the other posters - would you be comfortable wearing the engagment ring on your right hand and wearing the wedding band by itself?

I think I remember you posting about that on the board before you were a bee! If you haven’t figured out what you’re going to do already, you could always have something custom made for you with the diamonds from the band - just a thought. I have a three-stone and had my bands custom made (http://jessicalynnwrites.blogspot.com/search/label/rings)

good luck!

I didn’t like my original wedding band either. Even though I picked it out, but it just didn’t look right. I feel your pain! So I exchanged it. Could you get something smaller that is channel set or set with milgrain or beading or something?

gorgeous rings but they do look a little chunky, especially since it looks like you have very long thin fingers. you are lucky mr. cardi is understanding about this. i think @nikkiw has some good suggestions. if it doesnt work, think about putting this wedding band on your right hand and doing without the aggie ring. does mr. cardi have any other relatives that could use the ring? perhaps it would work better for someone else in his family?

i like the idea of going with one on the right hand and the band on the left hand.

I agree that they would look wonderful on opposit hands. I can’t exactly tell from the picture but it looks like both of your rings could pass for engagement rings. It that’s the case you could get a super thin diamond band and you could wear it with which ever ring you feel like wearing that day. Good luck!

I didn’t get a band along with my ring, but when we finally picked out my wedding bands I had a lot of uncertainty. Not because the look wasn’t great, but because it was a lot of bling and I was not used to it. I don’t like the look of just one band because of the style of ring I have, but the 2 we picked out seem overwhelming at times and I worry that people will judge me thinking I needed all the diamonds to be happy (not the case). In the end though the set is starting to grow on me and I will adjust and am glad we didn’t change them.
