Mrs. Socks, Southern NJ/Philadelphia, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Web Developer/Marketing Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Engineer Engagement Date: September 7, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Ladder 15 Restaurant About Me: I am originally from the Midwest, but I love being an East Coast transplant! Mr. Socks and I are foodies and winos to the core---give us a hunk of cheese, some charcuterie and a glass of wine and we could die happy. We have two mischievous Wire Fox Terriers with completely opposite personalities but with a shared love of uprooting anything in our garden. Our backyard garden includes everything from tomatoes and peppers to a fig tree, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries! I love cooking, indie music, and spending time in our wedding city of choice---Philly!
About Mrs. Socks

There’s no way that I can talk about EVERY venue we visited because let’s face it… we would never get to any of the details of our wedding, and I’d bore you to tears.

But I can provide the abridged version, featuring the serious contenders. It was very important to us to pick the atmosphere of our wedding before we got into many planning details, so that’s how I’m telling you guys the story!

Round One: Vineyards.

I’m not sure if you can tell yet, but Mr. Socks and I are obsessed with wine. Naturally, we looked at the local vineyards in PA/NJ/DE. Didn’t think there were vineyards out here? Oh! You were wrong!

We looked at 14 vineyards, so just a sampling of some of the larger ones in the area. Out of all 14, I was ready to sign with Hopewell Valley Vineyards.

Sorry, this is the largest picture they have of their event room.

It was very pretty, brand new, and the wine was actually delicious (hey, I didn’t say that PA/NJ wine was always GREAT). Unfortunately, they were a little too new and didn’t really know how to handle some of my questions. The event coordinator seemed constantly frazzled, wouldn’t get back to me, and it just didn’t work. I knew I didn’t want to spend a year planning a wedding with someone that flaky.

Round Two: Gardens, Arboretums, Inns and Mansions

When I was in college, I worked for a very popular catering company in the Philadelphia area. Philly brides probably know exactly who I’m talking about—they dominate nearly every venue in the area. So I knew pretty quickly which ones I wanted to check out for my own wedding, but they had added a new venue to their list: The Lakehouse Inn.

Oh. My. Gahhhhh. I still drool every time I see these pictures. I think I spent about 3 weeks with a calculator gripped in my hand as I tried to find a way to make it work with our budget. Saturday weddings were something like 26 grand—and that’s not including food!!

Well. I knew I had to move on, but… holy moly. I mean… a lake, a beautiful inn, an INDOOR WATERFALL, a fire pit with marshmallows after everyone else leaves? It should be a crime to want something so badly.

Alas, it was not meant to be. (But if you’re getting married here, you MUST invite me—as long as you don’t mind me drooling all over your wedding.)

Round Three: Restaurants

Here’s where our search for a venue turned expensive: not only did we visit a lot of the upscale restaurants on our list, we ate there as well. It was a fantastic way to get to know the Philly/NJ restaurant scene, but it was also a fantastic way to lighten our wallets.

As much as I wanted the Lake House Inn, I found something else…something wonderful…something that I wanted even more.

R2L.

The coolness factor spiked off the charts for us. R2L is the highest restaurant open to the public in Philly. It’s on the 37th floor of 2 Liberty place, the view is spectacular, the food is to die for, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you’re a VIP. We went to the management about hosting our wedding here on the 2ND DAY after they had opened. Mr. Socks and I were going to get married HERE. I knew it. We had to. There was just no other place that we could marry at that point in our minds.

Of course, things didn’t turn out that way, but stay tuned to hear why…

Did you have a difficult time finding a venue or was it a cakewalk for you?

We looked at several places we loved in Philly, but we never got a straight answer. Places would double quotes and spring things on us. Or they would never email back.

We finally found the Independence Seaport Museum and fell in love with the views and Nancy (the event planner) was wonderful! I can’t wait to get there.

hmm So when I was looking for colleges I visited 31 and applied to 11 (got into all except 1 wait-listed me). Point is I thought our venue search was going to be a nightmare. It’s not that I am indecisive. It’s more like I know “exactly” what I want. “Exactly what I want” doesn’t exist at one venue. Even my #1 choice - which we didn’t go with - had it flaws. I detested where the onsite -ceremony would be held.. It took a good 10 visits (9 in North NJ and 1 in South NJ) for me to pick “the venue.”

I absolutely knew I wanted a view . . . I got one of the best ones in Houston. 49th floor with a clear view of the west side of town. The most amusing thing was all the people lined up taking photos of the view.

@Amira: We had that problem with a bunch of places as well…in the end, it was their loss!
@Cacey: SO jealous!! It’s amazing…I really wish we could have found a way to make it work!!
@iswimibikeirun: Th 49th floor! That’s SUPER high! That sounds amazing!

we had problems with our place after we signed with them. they had fired the event coordinator who we liked and who was so nice to us. We were excited to work with her and loved the venue so we signed the contract. Fast forward 5 months and we get an email from some new lady who doesn’t even tell us the old lady was fired and starts trying to change our contract. I didn’t like our venue in the end because it was a pain in the @$$ to work with the young new lady who was on a power trip. Just goes to show that things that seem perfect can end up being bad in the end!

The Lakehouse inn is so beautiful, its one of the places I looked at online but we never went there to visit. The only place we did actually visit was the beautiful place we got married at…Glen Foerd Historical Mansion! It was a wonderful day and the staff was so great…love it there!

These are some amazing options! Venue-hunting was the longest, most stressful process for us, and I’m so glad we finally just picked a place. : )

26 GRAND? Not including food? Mother of MERCY. And I thought our venue was pricey…

I looked at The Lakehouse Inn too..I fell in love immediately but once I saw the rental price (I think it was like 10k for a Saturday in June) I knew I had to keep looking. We decided on Cescaphe Ballroom in Northern Liberties - which I’m so freaking psyched about!
