Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

I keep reading all these polls about the all-time best wedding dress and Princess Diana’s dress comes up a lot.

Here’s a look at it:

I don’t get it. I am really not a fan. Now I realize that pretty much most wedding dresses produced in the 1980s were… um… interesting, but it’s been almost 30 years since her wedding and I don’t understand how people looking at the dress now still seem to find it gorgeous, especially when there are so many other incredible dresses to choose from.

What’s your all time favourite celebrity wedding dress? Are there any Diana wedding dress fans out there that can explain it to me?

I don’t get it either - to me, it looks like way too much and actually (IMO) looked frumpy. But I was young when Diana was popular (and pretty young when she died) so I didn’t really follow it.

I thought Christina Hendricks’ dress was gorgeous.

I don’t think it’s considered one of the greatest of all time so much for the actual dress as much as the fantasy it inspired. Diana’s wedding dress spared no expense, and its grandeur and opulence really epitomized the fantasy tale… at least in my opinion. And the obsession with the dress really began the entire world’s obsession with her life too!

Yeah, but to be honest, the dress doesn’t do much for me either. :-)

very simple, if you have some idea about wedding videography or photography you can get it, wedding planners do that a lot and wedding vidographers.

Hack off the sleeves and drop the neck into a deep V and I’d be all over Diana’s dress - it really is pretty, great fabric, great shape, etc. The sleeves and high neck are just … 80s.

I think people associate the dress with the wedding too, and she really was such a romantic public figure - people were crazy about her!

personally i have ALWAYS thought it was hideous - wayyyy too over the top. too many ruffles, too many poofy crap.. wayyyy too over the top. lol

but i do have to say i loved Diana. and if you are gonna do over the top it helps if you have HRH in front of your name.

now if you ask me, “classic” and “timeless” and best dress of all time? grace kelly - http://www.philamuseum.org/collections/permanent/56621.html

really you cant beat that…

Diana was defnantly about the fairy tale, the princess and her prince charming. Pitty she didn’t find her happy ever after to go with it

yeah i don’t see what the fuss about princess di’s dress is all about. i do like the audrey hepburn wedding dresses from her movies though i realize that it’s not her actual wedding dress.

I am old enough to remember waking up early to watch Diana and Charles’ wedding on tv. But, her dress seemed over the top and not my style even then!
My favorite celebrity bride is Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. I just loved her simplicity and I am looking for something similar on my wedding day.

What people love about her dress is not the fabric, but the woman beneath her fabric. She embodied fairy tale for many people, and not only that, she was one of the kindest people the world had ever seen. When people see that dress, they see the person that wore it, not the pouffy sleeves.

Even though I really don’t like that ostentatious of a wedding dress myself, I can definitely see how it would be fitting for queen (or queen wannabee, in her case :-p ). I’m not exactly the “queen-for-a-day” kinda girl, though ;)

The thing that has always impressed me was her train. It inspired me to have a really long one.

I, too, am old enough to remember watching it on TV. Like other people said, it was all part of the fairy tale. It was a complete 180 from how the royals were viewed before. She was so much more accessible. And, yes, the train. I had never seen a train to long but she could totally pull it off in that huge church.

Nope, I don’t get it at all! I’ve never understood why people love that dress so much.

I don’t think ‘best’ is the right word… but it’s certainly one of the most memorable and iconic.

I remember my mom waking me up super early to watch the wedding and being captivated by the train. It was so long. it was entirely about the fairy tale wedding. She was a modern day princess who could have been your next door neighbor. And, I have a lot of cousins who were married in the 80’s and i was even in some of their weddings (bridesmaids have nothing to complain about these days) and this dress would definately not have been out of the ordinary. this dress is so 80’s wedding dress fabulous.
