About Mrs. Seashell

I bought my wedding dress. Ages ago, actually. I’ve actually had it in hand (well, stored safely at the bridal shop) since late 2009. She may not even need any alterations. She’s pretty damn perfect… with one exception.

There’s been a trend of designers adding colorful sashes to their dresses. One of the most notable ones was this:

Oh, Dah'ling You're Far Too Busty! : wedding accessories providence 2009 Br1 2009_br

{source}

Mine came with a colorful sash, too. Except it is a thick, dark HUNTER GREEN. Whaaaaaaa? I know. And it’s sewn on.

It’s not the end of the world, as it could certainly be replaced. But with what?

I hit the internet. I found this and purchased it right away. So pretty.

Now, I haven’t shown you my dress yet, so the next part you’re just going to have to visualize. Soon after receiving the sash in the mail I was in Providence. Mama Seashell and I made a trip to the bridal shop and excitedly held the sash up to my dress to see if I’d found the perfect solution. I kind of wrinkled my nose, tilted my head to the side and said, “Well, I’m not so sure…” Mama Seashell did something similar. Then the dress shop owner hurried over and blurted out in her thick British accent, “Oh, dah’ling, you’re far too busty! The poof and fluff of that sash with your bust! Oh! It’s just FAR, FAR too much! It simply won’t work!”

How’s that for brutal honesty? Frankly, she was totally right. It was not working. Lucky for me, the shop owner knows a thing or two about wedding dresses and sewing and has offered to make me a custom non-poofy (and non-hunter green!) sash. Now, I just need to decide what it is that I want…

Did you and your wedding dress designer have diverging taste? What edits did you make to your dress?

That 5eizen sash is GORGEOUS. Before I bought my dress, I was contemplating a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR Reem Acra belt (and tossing my scrip for crazy pills). I’m not sure what a big rack has to do with a sash, but I’ll take your word for it. Did you try the dress on with the sash? Maybe though, you don’t want such a busy sash to downplay your dress, which you must show!

Too busty?? That’s a good problem to have. :) Take it from this official, card-carrying member of the Itty-Bitty Committee.

Um, that 5eizen sash is amazing, but I can see how it could be too much - how funny that the consultant was so honest with you! :) Can’t wait to see what kind of sash you end up with! I love sashes on wedding dresses!

I actually haven’t done any editing to my dress. I’ll just add a chocolate brown sash and call it a day.

@eileen marie: @Farfromachildbride: It’s funny - the dress doesn’t even make me terribly top heavy or anything. But she was right, it was definitely too much!

Haha she sounds hilarious! That sash is gorgeous though. I can see why you snatched it up. Oh well, I’m sure yours will be even more lovely!

I love the sash trend. I’m getting a brightly colored sash for my dress :).

i have made a few changes. i added beaded scalloped edge lace around the bottom of my bubble hem, and also around the bust and back. i also ordered a matching lilac sash, the same color of my bridesmaid dresses. my final touch was dying the crinoline!

i haven’t made them yet, but i know what i’m doing: 1) i am going to change the illusion neckline from going wavily across my collarbone to follow the sweetheart cut of the satin underneath (but still have an inch or more of the lace), 2) add a beaded belt-let (is that a word? if not, i’m making it one - i have an open back on my dress and so can’t have a sash, so it will be on the front and then around a bit to the side to taper off), and then3) also having the lace tacked to the satin on the skirt so that it lays how i want it to.

@ miss seashell - have you thought of using the sash as a headband the day of, or on your rehearsal dinner dress? it’s too gorgeous to not use somehow!

This made me chuckle. I am glad you can still find a solution. The sash was pretty in the picture, though! :)

Being a busty gal myself, I love the idea of something to give a nice waistline and avoid a uniboob look which I think sometimes happens with strapless dresses. I have to share…My lovely MOH sent this to me to cheer me up after my dress fitting last night. My seamstress kept asking if I gained a few pounds since last week when I had my last fitting. And then I nearly passed out. Twice. And the she proceeded to ask if maybe I was pregnant. 3 times.

I made a custom “sash” - it’s more like a belt but it took me forever to bead the whole thing. I love it though.
