Mrs. Pashmina's Picture
Mrs. Pashmina, NYC/Catalina Island, CA Age and Occupation: 28, Arts Education Fiance's Age and Occupation: 34, IT Administrator Engagement Date: April 26th, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catalina Country Club, Catalina Island, California About Me: I'm a laid-back Cali girl who moved to NYC for school, and ended up staying for love. My fiance is a quick-witted Jersey boy, a self-proclaimed Foodie and the funniest man I've ever met. Together we love exploring the city streets embarking on our next misadventure---and yes, this often involves eating off food carts and trying "the next big thing". I'm the girl in the sundress, snapping photos and collecting trinkets of memorabilia along the way. As a girly girl at heart, I am excited about our romantic natural island wedding incorporating our American & Filipino traditions.
About Mrs. Pashmina

Mr. Pashmina and I went on our first date on my birthday. This sucks because it is BOTH my birthday and our anniversary on one day. I don’t like this for two reasons: #1, I usually go see my family in California around this time. Since my sister’s birthday is the day before mine so we usually take the two days and celebrate together. If Mr. Pashmina goes with me then it is great, but it isn’t always just us. And if Mr. Pashmina doesn’t go then I am without him for our anniversary. And if I decide to stay in NYC to be with him I feel as if I am missing out, and always miss my family. And #2, I get one holiday when it really is two. Call me spoiled.

So when planning our wedding date I knew that this would be a big day for the two of us. We were going to celebrate this day over our current anniversary. When picking the day, we wanted to avoid all existing holidays and family member’s birthdays. If we could avoid it there wouldn’t be any double celebrations this time!!

We LOVE Summer. So a summer wedding it had to be! Personal photo

The second factor that I considered, which was SUPER important, was school holidays. Since one of our families would be coming from the opposite coast, we wanted to make sure it would be practical for all children and parents to attend. Spring break, winter break, and summer break were the best choices. Next best would be the smaller three day weekends––but again these are usually holidays.

The third factor, was that we had to have an outdoors ceremony. This was the only thing I was dead set about. So, that meant we needed a date that would be suitable for an outdoor ceremony.

And a fourth related factor was that we wanted it to be bright, sunny and cheery. I dislike winter on the East Coast, and springtime is so finicky with all the rain. So, that left fall and summer. Mr. Pashmina and I LOVE autumn but we are so busy in October selling pumpkins at his family’s farm.

So, summer it was meant to be. School doesn’t get out until late June. My work’s busy season isn’t finished until July 23rd. So, the THE EARLIEST Saturday we could get married would be July 31st.

This would be the day! There aren’t any family or national holidays around this time. The season is just right. Everyone would have ample time to vacation afterwards in August. I love the way the sun sets in late summer, the colors, the flowers, the smells! It was all set! We had our day!!

How did you decide on your date? Was it an all-important decision or did you just pick your date based on the season (or some other important factor to you)?

I love, love, love summer weddings! So gorgeous! Mr. C and I chose a winter wedding mainly because of the cost - it is about half the price for us to get married in winter rather than summer!

It’s funny you mention your birthday/anniversary. Our dating anniversary is 2 days after my birthday and we’re getting married 3 days after that! So we’ll keep it all in a one week time-frame. Which I don’t mind - it will make the celebrations and anniversaries extra special. :-)

July is a great month…. and I don’t just say so because that’s when my birthday is. Funny that you ended up with July to avoid family birthdays. We have most of our family birthdays in July, so that would not work for us!

We chose our date for 1 emotional and 2 practical reasons:

1) We want to get married already! So we didn’t want to wait a year (or more!) to get married. We’re both in our 30s and at this point, we just want to get started in our married lives together.

2) Since we live in Nicaragua and the wedding will be here, all of my family & friends will be traveling from abroad. Therefore we wanted to time it with holidays to make it easier for people to get time off work - so we chose Thanksgiving time. We ended up with Friday, Nov. 26 because that allows people to get back to Managua in time to catch an early Sunday morning flight back.

3) End of November is one of the nicest times of year here for weather. The rainy season is just over, so things are still green but not rainy, and it’s not too hot yet!

When we got engaged, this date was only 6 months away… but thankfully planning a wedding here in Nicaragua is not quite so crazy as it can be in the US. A couple months is generally enough time to book a venue!

Our wedding date is July 31st as well! It falls right between our birthdays and happens to be on a saturday this year so I think it might just be the perfect wedding date!

My date was 100% based on the Gator football schedule lol. Though we hate having to miss the FL/GA game, it worked for us because we needed a weekend that wasn’t a home game and hotels wouldn’t jack up their rates because of fans being in town. In the end this was the best decision for us (and being Florida we couldn’t do spring/summer tooooo hot!) It works out though because FL/GA is always during the day so we can watch the game as we are getting ready ;-).

My fiance just wanted a September wedding. It was his thing. September or October, actually, and October is baseball playoffs, so I vetoed it. He doesn’t really like the summer, I guess, and thought spring was cliche.

We have very few children in our families/friends group so we’re not that worried about school holidays. Our anniversary looks like it will be 4 days before his birthday (we picked the open weekend at the venue we loved), and he likes that. Easy to remember, I guess, plus we can make one weekend anniversary celebration and the next birthday celebration.

We consulted with family who are teachers to see when school started, we considered the very short summers that Seattle has, wanting to maximize the chance for beautiful weather for our guests and I’m not gonna lie I consulted my errrr…. monthy calendar and tried to project out the best week in July to get married- ummm cycle-wise. :) then it shifted and I freaked, then it shifted again and all is good. :)

Well…….. we originally chose our wedding date because he proposed to me on April 8th, 2010 so we decided to get married one year later April 8th, 2011. Our “save the dates” went out with the tag line “She said yes 04.08.10 they will say I do 04.08.11″ and we loved them. HOWEVER, we both wanted a fall wedding and didn’t think it was practical but other complications arose and we changed our wedding date to October 29th, 2010. A week later we moved it again to what is now the final date: November 5th, 2010 because my fiancé’s brother could not be here October 29th! So that was our dilemma in the deciding factor! :)

@shaydenise we did the same thing revolving around football except for I’m a GT fan! Our date is 9/11 (yes we know) and we decided because there was no Georgia Tech home game that week or the week after. It will also make it a good day for the future for us.

Summer weddings are soo pretty….we chose the fall because it’s both of our fav seasons and the date..well we were hoping for mid Sept., but that would have fallen on my MOHs bday…we went for the weekend after, 9/25 which happens to be the day after my bday (minibummer) but if the FI ever forgets my bday or our anniversary you best belief he will be in the dog house!

we met with the wedding planner at the beginning of May and had yet to set a date. Driving around with her and meeting vendors all day, she asked, of course, so what date have you decided? Well, we hadn’t. That day was may 1st. So we said, why not have it one year from today? Yes? o.k.! Decision made.

I wanted a Fall date, but right at the beginning of fall. Our date is just a nice number/date, and I’m pretty OCD when it comes to numbers.

We got engaged over Thanksgiving and really didn’t want to wait long. We also wanted to be able to take a honeymoon and my husband was in school at the time. So we picked May 8, 2010. The Saturday after finals. This gave us one week of vacation until his summer classes began!

I really wanted a fall wedding, but I knew I wanted the trees to be at full bloom. So I needed end of oct. But we had to settle with Nov. 5th because they church and time we wanted only had that available. I am happy with it though :)

You know another benefit to July 31 ?? (It’s our date too!): No competing sports games that will distract your guests! Luckily, the World Cup will have ended, college sports games haven’t started yet, and there’s no huge professional sports games either. I’ve heard so many stories of guys drinking at a sports bar before the game or being bummed out because they had to miss something. So voila, just your wedding! and no sports!

A pumpkin farm family!!! That’s super awesome! I considered all the same things as you and it was pretty painful. In the end, I think any day you picked would have been special. So excited it worked out well and you won’t have to share your anniversary with other days!
