Flowers Stress Me Out.

June 21st, 2010 @ 3:26 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

I kind of feel like a bad bride admitting this, but I totally don’t care about flowers. I mean, I want a bouquet, and I want it to be pretty… but beyond that? I couldn’t care less. I’ve never been very into flowers, and to be honest I can’t tell the difference between a dahlia and… well hell, I can’t even think of another flower name! See, I suck at the whole flower thing!

However, there is one flower that I’m completely obsessed with:

Billy buttons! Also called Billy balls, or craspedia. These flowers seriously make my day every time I look at them. They are so freaking adorable! So, basically, when it comes to flowers, all I know is that I want these guys all. over. the. place. Everywhere.

I’ve been doing my research like a good bride, and I’ve found that these babies really aren’t too expensive. I can get 20 bunches (200 stems) from FiftyFlowers for $169 – with free shipping! With 200 stems, I could do all sorts of fun stuff! Like this:

Ahhhh – I’m in love! I spoke with a florist recently who quoted me $12 a pop for a boutonniere just like the one above. But at a dollar a stem, I could make one even a little bigger for only about $2. Talk about some serious savings!!!

As far as my bouquet goes, I’m thinking that I’m probably going to use a florist. That may be the only thing I use a florist for, though. I would try to take it on myself, but I’m such a perfectionist that I feel like it may just add on too much stress to the days leading up to the wedding. Like I said before, I’m a total flower idiot, so I don’t know many specifics about what I want. I do know that I don’t want an all-white bouquet. Why? Mr. Cardigan is very adamant about my bouquet having some yellow in it. When I started looking at bouquet inspiration, he was very expressive about wanting me to have a yellow bouquet, because he likes the idea of how it would pop against my white dress. He picks the most random things to be passionate about! I think it’s kind of adorable. :)

So, beyond the color, I have no idea about what I want for my bouquet. I have a few inspiration photos bookmarked, but I have no idea what flowers are in them. Here are a few that I like:

Gorgeous, right? I think the last one is my favorite, and it just so happens to be from a florist in Austin – score! So, I’m thinking my plan is to print out these photos and just take them in to a florist and tell them to have fun. And, of course, if I end up deciding that having a florist do my bouquet is too expensive, I could always go with something like this:

I just can’t get enough of them! Do you have a flower that you’re obsessed with?

I love these too! So much so that my florist even dyed them green to match my colors, but still use them!

I don’t have a flower that I love, but I’m with you on flowers stressing me out. I just finally decided to hire a florist instead of trying to do them myself because I know NOTHING about flowers and don’t really have the time, energy or desire to learn.

Ahhhahahah Cardy, this is so funny! We’re both yellow shoed brides and now craspedia loving brides too?? haha This is almost an EXACT twin of my flower post! We’ll be doing craspedia bouquets, bouts, and centerpieces, but I’ll probably throw in some white/ivory flowers in the mix too.

Oh so funny!

I love the second bouquet for sure!! I adore the billy button and had no idea what it was until I started wedding planning…I would love to use them, but the pops of yellow prob won’t work in the my color scheme.

For me it’s the Daisy. So simple, so happy. I’ll work them in somehow (wink).

Lillies. I have them EVERYWHERE. I have white, cream and orange. In fact - the orange tiger lily is WHY i even chose orange and brown as my colors. :)

Thank you thank you! I have just started to think about flowers and the best I could come up with was “those round yellow things. Are they even flowers?” But now I know what they are called, and now I will have them. :)

Oh fun! Those are definitely smile-inducing! :)

Just to think about with DIY flowers… I did bouquets for a friend’s wedding and just wanted to advise that what sounds like a small task, is actually quite complicated and time consuming…

I originally was going to do boutonnieres also, but after it took me two hours to make something that some-what resembled a boutonniere, I scrapped it and focused on bouquets. And just with those… here’s what was time consuming…
*Researching and shopping for supplies
*Making sure someone was at home when the flowers arrived by mail 3 days before the event.
*Driving home from work to get them in water ASAP
*Not being able to use my bathtub for 3 days because it was filled with flowers
*Picking out the flowers that broke or were otherwise damaged in the mail
*Trimming larger blooms to make them more manageable
*Making the bouquets the night before and then figuring out how to keep them in water as long as possible the day of without the ribbon getting all soaked…
*Doing emergency management when some of the blooms broke in transit to the ceremony.

Basically it took up all of my evenings starting 3 days before the wedding. My recommendation would be to ask for help from family/friends on this one! Maybe with an assembly line and helpers, the task would be much easier!

Good woman!

At a florist meet I tried to describe these and he hadn’t a clue what I was talking about, he insisted they were alliums!
Do you know if they come in other colours? The yellow is lovely, of course, but my colours are raspberry and apricot. I’d imagine they prob run the spectrum through yellow to orange though.
Thanks for posting!

@kamydoo: Yeesh, that sounds like a lot of work! I’ve ruled out DIYing our bouquets, but I’m probably still going to try to do the boutonnieres. I figure it shouldn’t be too difficult if we stick with just craspedia. If you have any tips for me, though, that’d be awesome! As I mentioned in my post, I’m a total flower idiot! :)
@aunt pol: As far as I know, they just come in yellow, but Mrs. Frozen Yogurt said she had her florist dye some green for her and that they turned out great, so that’s an option! I’m sure a florist could dye them in one of your colors!
