Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

I love pomanders. Love them, love them, love them. When I first discovered them, I kept seeing photos of flower girls carrying them, which is possibly one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen. But, my little niece (aka, our flower girl) is SO excited about being a flower girl, and I would hate to take away her moment to throw petals on the ground. To a five year old, that’s a pretty exciting job, and I just can’t deny her of it. So, I figured I would use them for aisle decor! It’s way cheaper than using real flowers, and seriously? They are just freaking cute. I scoured the internet for inspiration photos like this one:

I thought it was decided, and that’s what we’d do! Until, one day during a casual conversation about wedding decor, I mentioned these little cuties to Mr. Cardigan… I showed him a picture and he promptly replied, “What the hell is that? Is that a loofah?”

… Sigh. He did not see the beauty in these cute little pomanders, and he insisted that if I wanted to decorate with them I may as well skip the DIY part and just head to Wal-Mart for a bunch of loofahs. Thanks, honey. Needless to say, those were out. He was pretty adamant about that part. But for some reason, I just couldn’t let them go! I am all about DIYing as much of this wedding as I can, and I knew that lanterns or real flowers would be way too expensive to decorate the aisles with, and I was determined to have SOMETHING for our aisle decor. But then… I stumbled upon pretty much the best thing ever: Kusudama balls. Drool. Ah-may-zing! I was instantly smitten. I showed them to Mr. C and he looked at them for a minute, cocked his head to one side, and said “Hey… those things are pretty cool.” SCORE! He approves!

So, with my brain all in wedding mode and being so excited about this new discovery, I immediately rushed to Michaels to get some craft paper and try it out. I grabbed a piece of yellow cardstock scrapbook paper and came back to try it out. We were actually in Dallas visiting Mr. C’s family at the time (what? When the crafting bug hits, you can’t ignore it!), so I didn’t have much to work with. All I could find were some scissors and double sided tape (couldn’t even find a dang ruler!) but I figured the paper was 12X12, so it should’ve been pretty easy to fold it and cut it into 3X3 squares, right? I did the best I could and folded away. It turned out looking like this:

Pomanders? Don’t You Mean Loofahs? : wedding austin decor P1010171 p1010171

Fail! Turns out when they say you need a 3X3 square, they really aren’t kidding—it should be pretty precise. And thick cardstock paper? NOT SMART! It was next to impossible to fold, and the tape was not anywhere near strong enough to hold it all together.

But, I didn’t give up! Later, I’ll share my second (much more successful attempt) at making an origami flower!

Did you have any major crafting fails?

this may sounds so anti-bridal, but i agree with Mr. Cardigan, Pomadors have always reminded me of loofahs.

I’m doing the oragmi promenaders or really my SO is doing them. It was his idea.

As for crafty fail: my second dress wins it. It’s a total mess.

Tissue paper flowers might be easier to work with. I made a ton of them for a summer party once, and they turned out great!

ahhh hahahah loofahs are DEF not the same thing as pomanders, Mr. Cardy! Oh, boys.

I love the little flowers! Good luck on your second attempt! How will you use them? Will they be strung together down the aisle? Can’t wait to see how you use them!

So sorry you can’t have your pomanders! I hadn’t really seen them until a friend of mine got married a couple years ago and had us bridesmaids carry them–soooo cute!!

No crafting fail to share, but I did carry a pomander in a friend’s wedding and it was v. awkward. It’s like holding a flower-covered bowling ball and you can’t set it down without squashing a side of it. By the end of the evening, it was pretty much a mess.

I can relate to flower girls and their petal-throwing fantasies. I’d wanted little daisy bouquets for mine (4 and 7 year-old nieces) but they are very clear in their preference for dropping petals. OK, I gave in. I hope they are not too extra-zealous with the task.

I would say my pomanders were a craft fail in the eyes of my fiance as well! After I finished he said, “that looks like the thing hanging in the shower” aka loofah BOYS ugh

Um, I just made a tulle pom pom and I seriously looked at it and realized I’d essentially made a loofah. :D But I’m really excited you’re making the kusudama flowers!
