I love pomanders. Love them, love them, love them. When I first discovered them, I kept seeing photos of flower girls carrying them, which is possibly one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen. But, my little niece (aka, our flower girl) is SO excited about being a flower girl, and I would hate to take away her moment to throw petals on the ground. To a five year old, that’s a pretty exciting job, and I just can’t deny her of it. So, I figured I would use them for aisle decor! It’s way cheaper than using real flowers, and seriously? They are just freaking cute. I scoured the internet for inspiration photos like this one:

And this one:

And this one:

I thought it was decided, and that’s what we’d do! Until, one day during a casual conversation about wedding decor, I mentioned these little cuties to Mr. Cardigan… I showed him a picture and he promptly replied, “What the hell is that? Is that a loofah?”
… Sigh. He did not see the beauty in these cute little pomanders, and he insisted that if I wanted to decorate with them I may as well skip the DIY part and just head to Wal-Mart for a bunch of loofahs. Thanks, honey. Needless to say, those were out. He was pretty adamant about that part. But for some reason, I just couldn’t let them go! I am all about DIYing as much of this wedding as I can, and I knew that lanterns or real flowers would be way too expensive to decorate the aisles with, and I was determined to have SOMETHING for our aisle decor. But then… I stumbled upon pretty much the best thing ever: Kusudama balls. Drool. Ah-may-zing! I was instantly smitten. I showed them to Mr. C and he looked at them for a minute, cocked his head to one side, and said “Hey… those things are pretty cool.” SCORE! He approves!
So, with my brain all in wedding mode and being so excited about this new discovery, I immediately rushed to Michaels to get some craft paper and try it out. I grabbed a piece of yellow cardstock scrapbook paper and came back to try it out. We were actually in Dallas visiting Mr. C’s family at the time (what? When the crafting bug hits, you can’t ignore it!), so I didn’t have much to work with. All I could find were some scissors and double sided tape (couldn’t even find a dang ruler!) but I figured the paper was 12X12, so it should’ve been pretty easy to fold it and cut it into 3X3 squares, right? I did the best I could and folded away. It turned out looking like this:

Fail! Turns out when they say you need a 3X3 square, they really aren’t kidding—it should be pretty precise. And thick cardstock paper? NOT SMART! It was next to impossible to fold, and the tape was not anywhere near strong enough to hold it all together.
But, I didn’t give up! Later, I’ll share my second (much more successful attempt) at making an origami flower!
