A Sweet Jar of Buttons

June 22nd, 2010 @ 11:12 am by Mrs. Earrings

For a while now I have been mulling over favor ideas. We weren’t originally going to do them, but there are so many fun ideas out there that I just cant resist. I have two criteria for our favors, though: 1) That they be edible, and 2) that they won’t cost very much.

I have always loved the idea of handmade jam or honey favors: they’re purposeful, and you can make them look ridiculously good just with a bit of fabric and twine.

As cute as jam favors are, I wanted to do something a bit “different” with the concept. Jam as a favor has become so popular at backyard-type weddings lately (not that it is a bad thing, as they are ALWAYS cute). Those last two pics are of jars filled with candy or chocolatey goodness instead of jam got me thinking about other things I could put in jam jars.

Enter: The shortbread button.

We have a winner! For our wedding, this twist on a jar of buttons goes perfectly. I have noticed that our “theme” (a word that scares me to bits) is beginning to involve a lot of different purple fabrics, plus ribbons, lace and buttons and such. I love sewing so this wasn’t much of a surprise. Luckily I just stumbled across this idea and it ties in all those elements. And as long as it is something edible, Mr E loves it, too.

My mother has been throwing the shortbread idea for favors my way for awhile, but I just couldn’t make it “work” in my head until now. She wanted shortbread because she loves it, and it is a very NZ kind of thing to serve (especially at Christmas, which is so close to our wedding date), but I was worried the shortbread would be too fragile and crumble in transport (but in jars they will be protected), and I was so hooked to jam jars that I was a bit blind to any other ideas. Now we are both happy, so I guess Mum Earrings was right all along! :)

Pausing for a moment of nostalgia: back when I was 14 my mum and I made shortbread buttons (among other things) and tied them with ribbon through their holes to fundraise for me to go on a mission trip to Thailand. This favor brings back good memories.

Ooh, you know the best thing about edible favors? A trial run! Or two… or three… mmm. Yummy.

Are you putting a twist on a popular favor for your wedding? What is it?

I would love to get these as a guest! Better than jam, which, while also adorable and delicious, can pose problems for travelers who don’t plan to check their bags. But shortbread buttons, fab idea!

The jam idea is very cute. There is a site that my mom used once where you can get personalized wedding favor tags and labels where you can customize the text and pictures. They really came out great. Hope that helps?! http://www.labelsonthefly.com
