I’m Feeling Twiney

June 22nd, 2010 @ 3:08 pm by Mrs. Lobster

I’m feeling twiney. All followers of invitation twine stand up!

Last week I ordered not 1, but 2! giant spools of twine. I’m making around 100 invitations so I suspect I’ll have way too much twine leftover. I can use it to decorate gifts and such for the rest of my life. Yesterday I got the delivery confirmation. I looked forward to opening that box all day to see those two giant spools of twine.

Oh, no, my friends. There’s nothing giant about this spool.

Divine Twine

I am just realizing now that the dimensions were on the website!

It’s 2″ x 4″. This is what wedding crazy is doing to my attention to detail. I’m totally laughing at myself because I guess I have no sense of length and apparently 240 yards (which 720 feet) sounds like A LOT.

It’s still a lot of twine and thankfully I ordered 2 in different colors - I guess I won’t have to decide which one I like more if I use both!! There isn’t time to order more so if I can’t get this yummy detail on every invitation, I’ll live through it anyway. At this point, I’m not sure I can afford the time to make up for my mistakes. Anyone know if this is enough to double tie 100 invitations?

How did you handle invitation surprises?

Well let’s calculate it… 720 feet / 100 invitations = 7.2 feet per invite. Assuming your invites are around 5” x 7”, you should only need a foot of twine to get around each invite and then whatever amount extra to actually tie them. So I think you’ll have plenty leftover!

I used 1 spool of that twine for everything of mine and still have leftover. I single tied 50 invites, 60 programs, and used it randomly elsewhere. So you may be okay :)

I just ordered a spool of that twine, and it’s waaaay more than it looks like. The spool is tiny, but it is thick! I’m sure you’ll be fine!

i used about 2.5 feet of bamboo crochet thread for each invite (the spool had 300 yards). and i triple wrapped them around my invites and finished them with a bow. i still had a ton of yarn left, which i used for our favor tags.

I used their twine for my invites too! I bought one spool of yellow for 72 invites and I have about 1/2 spool left!

I love the look of twine tied invites — but does anyone know if it increases postage (because it’s not flat)?

I got that twine in blue, with the intent of tying our invites! I got frustrated with how the pieces of the suite kept moving around, though, so in the end we went with belly bands. I’m saving the twine for something else - maybe our favors or the mason jar vases.

That is hilarious — I had the exact same reaction. I knew the yardage and all that but was SO surprised when it came in the mail because it was so tiny. I also wrote a blog post about it :) so funny!

All that said, I’m sure you’ll have plenty of twine. I tied up about 240 invitations (twice around) without finishing a spool, and bought another spool to use for our 250 programs. Still have a lot left over from that second spool!

LOL. After reading these comments, clearly I overreacted. Now I’m back to having way too much extra but with the bonus of taking up less storage space :)
@amariem25: Ah, thank you. I will definitely not be using 7′ per invite. I was trying to calculate it the other way figuring out how much twine per invite but your way is much smarter.
@prbride: I haven’t gone to the post office yet but yes it will cost more b/c it’s not a flat envelope. If you’re lucky, however, you might get a more sympathetic postal worker who won’t charge you if it’s not *too* bumpy.

You’ll have plenty - I’ve double wrapped my invites (about 60 or 70), wrapped 70 sets of birchwood cutlery for our Sunday BBQ, and I’m planning to use it on our 100 programmes - I’m sure I’ll have enough… but I’ll be glad when I’ve done the programmes, as I won’t have time to order anymore either!

sounds like you’re in good shape! although i’m in the same boat, i would have expected two giant spools also.

I just got my spool of that exact thread today. I was surprised at the size of it too. I should have read the dimentions. I just assumed it was huge! lol Its super pretty though!

@amariem25:
Actually, it’s more like 2 feet, but whatever to tie it with– 5 inches for the front, plus 5 inches for the back, then 7 and 7. But still, say you need 6 inches for tying, you are 2.5 ft per invite, times 100, 250 feet. You have plenty!

just a tip… once you figure out exactly how many inches of twine you need per invite, cut all your twine to legnth at once. if you cut and go as you tie them on the invite, you may end up using more than you’d like.

I had the same reaction to the size of the spool when I got it in the mail, although it is still a lot of twine it definitely looked much bigger in the pictures!

@KWebs:
How is it 2 feet? Miss Lobster said “I guess I have no sense of length and apparently 240 yards (which 720 feet) sounds like A LOT”

720 feet divided by 100 invitations equals 7.2 feet per invite… LOL

(1 yard = 3 feet)
