Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

Food is definitely one of the main ways that we’ll be conveying a wintry feeling. I think food is such an integral part of any holiday. To me all these images convey a sense of comfort and warmth.

Soup

I think serving soup is a great way to convey a warm welcoming wintry feel to our guests. Originally we’d planned to serve soup as the first course of our meal, but now I’m toying with the idea of soup shots during the cocktail hour. I love the idea of soup shots and I think our guests would really enjoy them, but I haven’t made any decisions yet.

Cocoa

Mmm cocoa, or even better, cocoa with marshmallows. Drinking cocoa always reminds me of the hours I used to spend outdoors playing in the snow. I’m a big fan of this whole designer marshmallow trend and would be happy to see it make an appearance at our wedding.

As a proud Canadian I am quite a donut fiend and I’d love to serve something like donuts and cocoa as a late night snack.

Gingerbread

I think Gingerbread is one of the ultimate wintry foods. I absolutely love gingerbread loaf, but I refuse to make it any time other than the month of December. That makes it all the more fun when December rolls around.

I also can’t forget the classic gingerbread house! I don’t think this will make an appearance at our wedding, but you never know. Decorate your own gingerbread house, anyone…?

So these are a couple ideas I’ve been toying with in terms of how to incorporate the season into our wedding food. We haven’t figured out anything definite, and are certainly open to suggestions!

What foods do you associate with the winter holidays?

Cider and eggnog too! And candy canes. Reading your post makes me want to cozy up in front of a fireplace with cocoa. And gingerbread. I think I’m ready for a mid-afternoon snack!

All of these ideas look so wonderful for a beautiful winter wedding. One idea you said might not make an appearance was the Gingerbread house…. BUT I had a friend get married in December and she had 5 gingerbread houses set up at the end of the wedding as part of the decorations. They were beautiful and super creative!! Just an idea if you’re interested!!

I think that finding a way to incorporate Candy Canes in your wedding would be so fun! And they are cheap! Candy cane escort cards? How fun!

Now you’re making me wish I had a Christmas wedding instead of our October one! Hot buttered rum? OR you could have Puerto Rican eggnog (coquito! it is so so delicious, cocunut milk, rum, cinnamon, what’s not to love?)

Soup makes a wonderful first course. Our guests enjoyed it.

If you love gingerbread, why not consider it for your cake. If there are people who don’t like gingerbread, they’ll be happy with the donuts/cocoa.

@Miss Thimble: Wow I can’t believe candy canes never even occurred to me until you mentioned them. What kind of winter bride am I?
@Miss Plum: What a neat way to decorate. That’s a really great idea.

All of those are great ideas for a winter wedding! As for the gingerbread houses, maybe you could do something with that for the favors - a miniature DIY gingerbread house kit! Like this, but for gingerbread houses - http://www.projectwedding.com/blog/2010/06/18/sweets-i-heart-smores/ That would be really cute!!! As for the soup, we’re having butternut squash soup shooters during our cocktail hour at our fall wedding, and I am so stinkin excited about it!

Those donuts and cocoa are too cute! We had tomato soup shooters at our cocktail hour—tall shot glasses of soup with a small wedge of grilled cheese sandwich on top!
