STDs and the City

June 23rd, 2010 @ 8:38 am by Mrs. Socks

Do you want to know where I get my most brilliant ideas from?

STDs and the City : wedding diy philadelphia save the dates Shower

The shower! (Side note: do NOT google “woman showering” when at work!!)

Much like this woman, I look very happy when I get a brilliant idea while I scrub down.

So my brilliant shower idea came for my Save the Dates! I had been trying to think of something cool to do that would get people excited about our location in Philly.

Before my aforementioned brilliant idea, I had come up with this:

(Note: When I made these, R2L was still stringing us along)

STDs and the City : wedding diy philadelphia save the dates Std3

It’s cute, right? But it wasn’t very WOW, and I wasn’t thrilled with it. I probably would have mounted it on some purple or maroon cardstock and have been done with it. But where’s the fun in that?

Here’s the first draft of my brilliant shower-idea STD:

This is the outside of the card (folded hamburger style) and the date will be cut out meticulously with an X-Acto knife (because I don’t have a Cricut). So when it’s cut out, you’ll be able to take a peek of our beautiful city!

Inside, the invite looks like this:

So I have the whole city skyline! I think this STD is much more reflective of our venue and the swank city feel our wedding will have.

I wanted to do the cards on a dark grey cardstock, and then print the skyline on white cardstock to paste it in & give it a small border.

This idea was pretty ambitious for me, but I was determined to make it work! I’m nowhere near the craftiness level of some bees, but I did have to take design courses in college, so I figured if I really stuck with it, everything would be dandy!

Are you DIYing your STDs? Are you trying to make yours match the atmosphere of your venue, or some other part of your wedding?

#1- I love that you just said “hamburger style”… takes me right back to the playground :)

#2- I think maybe you need to do the pic of the city on shiny-ish paper. Photos generally look better on shiny paper than on flat cardstock

And to answer your question, I am diy’ing our stds and they’ll go with the invitations i’m diy’ing!

I also love that you said “hamburger style” and I think these will look awesome! I definitely wasn’t brave enough to take on a DIY for our save-the-dates. I can’t wait to see the end product!

I think it’ll look great and it makes me wish that we would’ve had time to do STDs, but getting engaged April25 for an August 15 wedding is not a lot of time.

Love it! Very cool idea. We matched our STDs to show the bridge near our venue :)

things like this make me wish we were doing save the dates, but no one in our family would understand them anyways.

Yay I’m your date twin (shh!) haha, it killed me to smudge it on my STDs for my post, and I regretted it later. We tried to match our wedding feel with some pretty paper whimsy- no DIY here. I love your city scape cut out idea.

Those look great! We D-I-Y’ed our Save-The-Dates as well … was fun to have control over all the details! Helps when your fiance is a graphic designer, too.

PS — I am a 10.10.10 bride as well :)

That is a pretty cool std! Maybe you could find a plastic number stencil to run your x-acto along and make the cutting a little easier.

As an alternative to cutting out the numbers (which seems entirely too time consuming and prone to meltdowns for me!) you might consider a vellum layer which would allow you to see the skyline in the background, but bring your date to the front.

P.S. We picked 09.10.11 for ours - yay for fun dates!

Wow that is sickly ambitious. I thought I was a bit late with my STDs for my Jan 2011 wedding.. Did you start making them yet? are you printing that image yourself on paper?

I wanted a FUN winter date- but it had to be a Saturday.. and there is nothing out there.

Love them! but I cringe at the thought of you cutting all those by hand- I swear I’d do them for your on my silhouette- (but I have a sneaking suspicion you’ve already finished them)

I organized a college orientation one summer, and would show up each day with my co-coordinator asking me “so what did you organize in the shower this morning?” I used to study for grad school via note cards in plastic baggies in the shower. I hear ya sistah friend.
