Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!

DIY Aisle Decor: Round 2

June 23rd, 2010 @ 10:08 am by Mrs. Cardigan

So, last time we talked, I had failed majorly at creating a flower for a Kusudama Ball. But, I am a very, very stubborn person and I was determined to make it work!

So, off to Michaels I went in search of a paper cutter. I found this guy for only about $7.00! I was sold. I grabbed it and headed home to try it out. I (very quickly and easily) cut out some 3X3 squares of paper and began folding. I only had regular tape and boring old white computer paper, so it was kind of difficult to make it work, but I ended up with this:

Much better, right? I crooned over it for about 15 minutes and made Mr. Cardigan look at it/praise my amazing crafting abilities about 10 times before I was satisfied. We agreed that tape was not the way to go, and that once it’s time to actually put these babies together, a glue gun will be our BFF. We also agreed that the thinness of this paper was SO. MUCH. BETTER than the crazy thickness of the cardstock I used last time. I was very proud of this little guy, but that’s just one flower. I’d have to do a lot more folding to actually make a real Kusudama ball—much less enough of them to fit on all of the aisles in our ceremony venue! I see a lot of folding in my future!

Lesson learned: Thin paper and NO TAPE!

Are you as stubborn as I am when it comes to crafting projects?

It looks so cute! Do you have a picture of a completed ball? I am curious what these look like in the end.

I was inspired by your first post on these and made my own kusudama ball last night! I used paper of different colors and the yellow flower I made was definitely the prettiest. These will be adorable in your wedding color! Good luck–I am excited to see how they turn out :)

Too bad you don’t need blue ones, or I’d be your woman! :D Can’t wait to see the finished kusudama ball!

If I am remembering correctly, I think Mrs. Guinea Pig used origami paper for her flowers. It’s thinner than regular paper and might be easier to fold and work with and comes in many colors. Can’t wait to see what they look like when they’re finished.

I’ve been using construction paper. I got it in bulk at a school supply store, and it’s really easy to fold, even though it’s not the thinest paper. Good Luck! I know how time consuming it can be.

Um, yes! I will not give up on my second dress (possibly my breakfast dress). It will NOT defeat me.

We’re making the balls too, so thanks for the tips.

Have you finished an entire ball yet? I’m curious how big it will be using the 3×3 pieces of paper.

@redherring: I have, and there will be a post coming up about it soon! The full balls are smaller than I anticipated (there’s a photo in the post that will give you an idea of how big it is) so I am actually using 4×4 paper for the ones for the wedding.
