Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

An excessive use of candlelight (is there really such a thing?) will be another way we plan to convey a cozy vintage Christmas feel to our wedding. I absolutely love candlelight. I love how it instantly conveys a really cozy and warm atmosphere. While it’s lovely any time of year, for us it’s especially wonderful during the winter when it gets dark around 5:30PM here in Toronto.

Here’s a bit of candle inspiration for you:

I haven’t had a good list in a while (oh lists!), so here’s a list of how we’re planning to use candlelight in our wedding.

  1. Tea lights and votives placed all around the room where we will be having the ceremony
  2. We’ll be getting married in front of a lit fireplace
  3. My bridesmaids will be carrying lanterns instead of bouquets
  4. We’ll have another lit fireplace in the room where we’ll be hosting the cocktail hour
  5. I’m planning to design a centerpiece for each table that incorporates votives and tea lights in mason jars

However, I do have a few concerns about using so much candlelight. I’m a bit worried about how it will translate in terms of photography. While I love candlelight, I also definitely want to have pictures that aren’t completely fuzzy or dark. My second concern is that I’ll have too much candlelight and people will be way too hot. I guess I could always warn them ahead of time…

How are you incorporating candlelight into your wedding?

I really don’t think you can have too many candles :) But I get what you are saying about the picture quality. I would just make sure that you have enough main source lighting and not relying on candles as your pure light source, you should be good.

Your photographers will probably appreciate the extra light put off by the candles! Don’t worry about that part. That’s why they’re pros and they charge so much. :-)

And if it gets too hot….blow them out. Easy! (I know it doesn’t sound like a good option now….but on the actual day, you won’t care. Trust me.)

I think candlelight is very romantic. My sister had candles everywhere. She still has the pillar ones 4 years later………

I see you plan to have the fireplace lit… you may want to talk to your officient and make sure he/she is okay with that as he/she will be standing right in front of it and likely get very hot. Also, you may need to take precaution that if a spark flies from the fireplace (wood pops, settles, etc.) that it won’t land on clothing or other decor and catch fire. Just a thought!

Lucky you for having two fireplaces in your venue! Love all the candle inspiration. We placed pillar candles all across our head table!

Beautiful inspiration! We are getting married in front of an outdoor fireplace, but it will be 80 degrees outside. So we are substituting candles for lighting the fire.

I’m doing a winter wedding and planning on using the warm glow of candelight as well… in fact it inspired one of the main colors of our wedding: champagne/gold! I think that I’m going to use lots of candles on the tables because people are just going to be sitting there eating and thus shouldn’t be too hot… but for the dancing area using twinkle lights and maybe paper lanterns to give the same glow with less fire hazard and heat.

@Laura: Good point! Can you imagine if something/one caught on fire?
@jordynrose: That sounds so lovely.

I would love to have candles, but our venue is outside and I don’t want them to all blow out. McGroom wants them though, so we’ll have them.

In winter? The extra warmth will probably be welcome. Just promise me you’ll watch your dress near that fireplace!! ;)

oh your wedding is going to be so gorgeous and cozy! Love all your ideas, and I think they are so perfect for a winter wedding. For our wedding we will probably have some tealights and lanterns in the garden to give some “ambiance” as dusk falls/

I also plan to use an excessive amount of candlelight at my winter wedding! I’m attempting to DIY Martha’s lace candle centerpieces.
