About Mrs. Lobster

What’s My Kid’s Retro?

June 24th, 2010 @ 6:52 pm by Mrs. Lobster

I live in a 700 square foot apartment. My kitchen has just enough room for me to turn around in and storage consists of the oven and 3 drawers next to it. So when we started registering for wedding gifts, I was befuddled. We should focus on my “must have” items for our current kitchen, not our dream kitchen, right?

One of the things on that must have list is a Le Creuset Dutch oven. I’ve been eyeing these since I don’t know how long. Of course, with many must haves come difficult decisions like what color to choose?

Classic Red, Ivory, Caribbean Blue, Cobalt Blue

I love all of them.

But I do have a fear of the color I choose becoming my generation’s equivalent of retro olive green or orange cookware:

Then again, why not? Retro cookware reminds me of hanging out in the kitchen with mom thinking, ‘why the heck did my mom pick those colors?’ Or how there was always more leftovers in that same white “Spice of Life” Corning Ware container. Maybe my kids will always remember that ugly (to them) teal ceramic pot that held yummy chili or stewed chicken.

Do you reminisce on your childhood kitchen when you register?

GUILTY!!! I have the bottom dish… three of them! I love them. They were my moms and my grammys. Hahaha. I am in love with COBALT BLUE and it will totally be our generations olive green cookwear. :)

That last pic - my mom STILL uses that! It’s perfect for so many things :) I definitely reminisced when we were registering. I also found a lot of the same piece my mom had at a local vintage store. I think I need to go back and get a couple items.
My kids are going to make fun on my teal and lime green cookware, I just know it.

I think those colors are coming back! I think we had that casserole. And well… we’ve got all handmedowns right now so our kitchen isn’t so far off. But I love retro! I’ve succumbed to current trends and I’m not looking back so I’m sure my future kids will laugh at me :)

Oh, my mom still has a bunch of that old ridiculous looking cookware!

And I’m kind of jealous of your kitchen. I only have two drawers! :(

We have some of my in-laws’ vintage orange Le Creuset pieces and I think that they look awesome with our new stuff! You’re right, the retro cookware is so homey :)

you think a 700 sq ft place is small? Ours is 450 sq ft! We did register for a lot of our “dream kitchen” stuff, though - we’ve moved the pantry stuff out into the dining nook / living room, and have packed our nice new kitchen stuff into the kitchen as best we could.

haha, and yeah, my mom still uses dishes like the bottom picture, too. I love the memories tied to that ugly pattern. :)

OMG My mom has that corningware!! Like, the whole set. Awesome. I vote for the red, I went with it, and it matches lobsters :)

Ahhh, the spice of life corning ware lives on! Did they have a requirement that you had to have that if you got married in the 70s?
@Mrs. French Bulldog: I would love to see your kitchen with all the teal and lime green!
@melodicsighs1: Oh I know, for living in NYC 700 sq ft is downright spacious. But compared to most houses it’s probably not as much.
@Mrs. Hamster: Oh, what an excellent selling point!

We registered for the Le Creuset in the flame color. We love the retro look and the graduated color from orange to red!

My mom had the Corningware with the blue cornflowers, but I had a lot of friends whose moms used the Spice of Life stuff!

le creuset, no matter what color, will be a classic so totally go for it! and i hear you on the small space. actually most of our gifts are at my parents’ place, just *waiting* for the day we get a new place. just waiting.

The Caribbean blue is the most beautiful color! The color of the sky on a cloudless day or, exactly that, the color of the Caribbean Sea! It may be retro someday, but it is quite aesthetically pleasing unlike olive/split pea green or mustard yellow.

How hilarious–my mom has that last set too, and she recently gifted me one of the large casseroles. I think it’s terribly ugly, but there’s something to be said for something that she’s had since she got married in the 60s.
