Attack of the Veil

June 24th, 2010 @ 3:34 pm by Mrs. Sewing

So, a veil, eh?

Attack of the Veil : wedding diy honolulu veil Boo Vei Mr. Sew, for some reason, seems to find them more creepy than romantic.

Backing up a bit, I first laid out my grandmother’s veil pattern and cut out some tulle. Tulle is ridiculously cheap, by the way.

Attack of the Veil : wedding diy honolulu veil Cut Vei I decided not to make the little cap that the pattern specified, and instead needed to come up with my own sort of head-attachment. Recently, I’ve really been captivated by headbands, so I thought I’d start there.

The first attempt was with wire and sewed on ribbon, and um. That just wasn’t working at all.

Attack of the Veil : wedding diy honolulu veil Fail Ve The wire was pokey and not quite bent right, and the ribbon was floppy. Fail veil #1.

A few weeks later, I was visiting Sewing-Sis and she dragged me into a Forever 21 for whatever her 11-year-old fashionista needs may be (I had actually never been in the store before). They had a ton of cute headbands there. It gave me one of those “Really? Why did I bother trying to make my own? What is wrong with me?” moments. So I bought some less-than-$5 headbands to try again.

I attached the veil onto the white double-band, and tried to cover the froofy-tulle ends with a strand of pearl beads.

Attack of the Veil : wedding diy honolulu veil Fail Ve01 Veil fail #2 - it looked pretty shoddy, and the beads kept slipping around.

Attack of the Veil : wedding diy honolulu veil Grumble You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry, veil.

A few weeks after that (it takes me a while to recover from failure, apparently), I took the veil apart again for attempt number three. This time I just attached the tulle directly to the already-made pearl headband.

Attack of the Veil : wedding diy honolulu veil Veil Wi It works! Woooo!

Attack of the Veil : wedding diy honolulu veil Dsc0301

Attack of the Veil : wedding diy honolulu veil Veil Si Okay, so it’s not exactly the straightest. I’m hoping that’s just because I tried to put it on by myself, and not because it was sewed on crooked.

Despite the much-better-than-before outcome, Mr. Sew is still not a big fan of veils. Probably because I keep wearing it around the house while making creepy noises. However, we compromised - I’ll only wear it during the ceremony, and not with the tulle over my face. Hopefully that will prevent Mr. Sew’s face from contorting in pure horror as I lurch down the aisle to steal his soul.

Are you wearing a veil? How does your SO feel about the froofy tulle?

I’m still not sure about the veil either. You guys are incredibly adorable though, and though this post is not about that I think your dress story is hands down the coolest I’ve heard!

I went birdcage for, among other reasons, the big-poufy-mess worries. They’re unwieldy, I hear!

Steal his soul, love it. I also love the headband idea.

I’m making mine too because I really want one and I want it long. Plus, I’m cheap. Veils are overpriced. Sonce I’m in the middle of it, I’ll have to let you know how it goes.

My husband feels the exact same way about veils! So we compromised the same way you are - veil down my back for the ceremony (with a medieval headpiece) and completely off for the reception. I got my veil for dirt cheap on etsy, so that worked out fine.

Way to stick with it girl! Your veil looks lovely. I love veils but its really sweet of you to be so respectful of your fiance - and great that you found a compromise! I love that you made it yourself too, what a great way to save money!

You’re so freakin’ craft, Miss Sew!! I am actually not a bride-to-be, but am not at this stage in my life a veil person, so I hear Mr. Sew. I don’t love having random stuff on my head. They look so nice on other people though! You look great, and the compromise seems like a good one.

Pretty sure I’ll wear a veil, though not sure yet if it’ll be “traditional” or a birdcage. I figure, what other time in my life am I EVER going to get away with wearing a veil, might as well take advantage of it.
I keep trying to think of some cute analogy to you having already stolen Mr. Sew’s heart, what’s so bad about taking his soul too.. but can’t quite word it right. So there it is in its lameness.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you’re using a pattern from your grandmother! That is so sweet and personal! The veil looks great! You’re going to be such a beautiful bride!!!

My fiance’s only request was no cage veils. Lucky for him, they didn’t look good with my dress anyway. LOL I just hope he doesn’t step on the cathedral length one I wound up with. LOL

I think FI wants a veil….whenever he sees one on any of the bridal shows I watch he gets a cute grin on and asks if I will be wearing one….I am not a fan of the over the face ones though so if I get one it will be long and low .

I want your t-shirt. >.>

I’m still going back and forth on the whole veil thing. And tulle is cheap! Why do they charge so much for it in the stores?

too cute! you are right that tulle is ridiculously cheap, which explains why i don’t understand how shops can get away with selling $700 veils.

love the headband improvisation you did. i was a 2 veil bride: finger-tip length and a cathedral length. husband loved them both, but i did not put either over my face (creepy).

seriously, how much did you pay for the tulle? why didn’t i do that 5 years ago?

if there was a forever 21 close by i would totally shop there. i hate shopping but i know their clothes fit me so that’s a plus of not having to try anything on. and i know teeny boppers shop there, and i’m 30, a mom with 2 kids, but i have tried going into the women’s dept at stores and for the life of me, i always end up in the jr dept. =p
