About Mrs. Socks

Tea and Knee Length Dresses

June 24th, 2010 @ 2:32 pm by Mrs. Socks

Here is a pretty big confession. I kinda didn’t want a wedding dress. I mean, sure, I wanted a pretty dress to get married in, but the big ball gown dresses just aren’t my style. Before getting engaged, I had never even pictured myself in a wedding dress! So early on in my planning, I decided that I didn’t want to spend a lot of money it if it just wasn’t my “thing”.

I set my dress budget at $500. Most women scoffed at that when I told them, but honestly, our #1 priority is food and wine, not clothes. Don’t get me wrong, I want to look GOOD, but I also just want to focus on having a good time. So how does one look good on the cheap and have a rockin’ good time? I figured that since tea- and knee-length dresses have less fabric, they’d be less $$!

Of course, that wasn’t always the case, but I did find some great deals via the internets.

Here is a dress that is $73.99. $73.99!! I might just buy this because it’d be a cute dress to wear to our welcoming dinner for our out of town guests.

Isn’t it pretty? It’s so… PARTY to me. Like… yes, I am a bride, but I’m also fun and easy going!

Other dresses I looked at in the early planning stages:

Doesn’t this chick look like she’s about to rock? I love the lace details here. It’s simple, it’s no-nonsense, and it’s $790 from The Wedding Shoppe, Inc.

I love this dress! It’s a Ramona Keveza, and I’m not sure how much it retails for.

This one is only $189 since it’s a bridesmaids’ dress. While it’s sweet, it just didn’t have enough of a “personality” to it for me.

Sigh. Dolly Couture. Now HERE’S some personality! And aren’t they adorable! I get especially excited when I see the little peek of red coming out of the polka dotted dress! The fact that I couldn’t try these dresses on is what really prevented me from buying one.

Tea and Knee Length Dresses : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Michell Michelle Roth Polka Dot Dress

Now, Kleinfeld Manhattan says that this dress is “$”. Does anyone know what this means? I have to believe that Kleinfield’s “$” is a lot more than regular “$” at other bridal shops, but I just don’t know!

Tea and Knee Length Dresses : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Maggy L Maggy London Dress

These two are from Nordstrom. The first is BCBG for a reasonable $398, the second is Maggie London for $138.

You’d think that since I had an idea of the dresses I was leaning toward that I’d run straight to the nearest bridal shop, right? Well, I didn’t. I was a chicken and didn’t want to go shopping––mostly because I was just intimidated. I thought that people wouldn’t consider me a “real” bride if I didn’t have a “real” bride dress! I now realize that I was being a bit silly, but it was super scary at the time.

I did place one phone call about a dress though when I came across it. This breathtaking beauty, the dream of all dreams:

Tea and Knee Length Dresses : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Dress I Dress I love

Source

Sigh. $3000 for the dress and $1000 for the bolero. Stephanie Allin is the designer, and the style is called “The Nina Short”.  I would KILL for this dress. Really. Not joking here. Okay, I am… I don’t want you to think I’m off my rocker (yet).

It isn’t available in the States, although one shop in Virginia could have ordered it for me.

But alas, it was so far out of the question that I simply could not tempt myself by looking too often. It took me a while to come to terms that this dress wouldn’t be possible. So I turned my focus to the safety and reliability of wedding super-center David’s Bridal! I could try on the dresses, they were cheap, and it seemed like a win-win situation!

Are you a short-dress bride? Was the dress your “thing” or were you just not that into it?

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!

I wore the Michelle Roth Maya for my wedding in April.

The original retail of that dress was $2400. I bought it during a trunk show for much less than that.

And everything I’ve read lately about other brides researching this dress is that it currently retails for around $1800.

HTH!!

P.S. It was such a fun dress to wear!!!!

My sister wore the Dessy bridesmaid dress as her wedding dress, and she looked great! You can change the color of the satin (background fabric and sash) and the lace to create your own look.

I love those! That last dress you choked on the price about–yes, gorgeous! :) I wanted to be a short dress bride but it wasn’t in the cards. I tried on a few and due to my vertical challenged state (I’m 5′ 4 1/2″) and my large chest it made me look like silly and at times like I had stubbins for legs with feet. I looked like a wee bride lawn ornament!!!! I swoon over the short dresses some gals have though and wish it could have worked!

I SO HEAR YOU ON THIS. I’ve been having an identity crisis with my wedding gown. I have been waffling back and forth….almost bought a dress I love in a beautiful mettalic grey silk, but got lucky and found a white dress I love just as much. “Bridal” just isn’t me….but I found something simple and modern that I fell in love with - that I can rock with the accessories that I want! I think women should wear whatever makes them feel most “themselves” on their big day!

I’m hoping to be a short dress bride! Haven’t found my dress, yet, though. I love all the Dolly dresses, too, but not sure if they’ll work for me. I was thinking about checking out David’s Bridal… so I can’t wait to see what you found! I’m sure it’s fabulous. :)

I’m not a short dress bride, but a budget of $500 is extremely reasonable! I got my dress (went to the city and fought the crowds at a HUGE sample sale), had it altered, bought new shoes, and had a lace bolero made, all for about $425. Don’t let the magazines and high end retailers distort your view of reality :)

I’m a short dress bride with the POB Drew. But I tried the Maya on and was a little bit in love.

All very nice short dress options. I saw that polka dot one from Kleinfelds on the mannequin when I was there, don’t know how much is was though - sorry! I do remember thinking, “Any woman who would wear that at her wedding would be the coolest chick ever”

I considered a few tea length dresses, but ultimately decided to go long, figuring I can wear a shorter white dress to the rehearsal dinner or bridesmaid brunch or something. Though, the dress I chose has an ivory top but a light gold skirt, so I still struggle with worries that people won’t think it looks “bridal” enough.

I’ll be in a tea length dress myself in 3 weeks! I fell in love with the Dolly Couture dresses too. So awesome, aren’t they?

As it was, I ended up having a seamstress make up a vintage Vogue pattern for me, with a few alterations to make it more “me”. Had a fitting this past weekend and things are rocking away. I can’t wait to see it finished, complete with blue tulle peeking out below the hem! Eee!

PS- Didn’t Mrs. Dachshund get a Dolly dress? Maybe you could talk to her about her experience buying sight unseen?

I could have written this post myself - I really think I want a shorter dress and don’t want to spend that much money - I could adjust the budget for it but it seems silly when what I want is simple. I’m really intrigued by the idea of getting a bridesmaids dress in white but sometimes get nervous that stores won’t want to help me with that.

The ones that gets in my way is LOVE lace-up corset backs and those don’t really seem to go with tea-length dresses. Argh.

OMG I LOVEEE the last dress! Do you know of any seamstress that is willing to make you a similar dress?

I was seriously considering tea-length - SO CUTE!! - until my FI commented (unprovoked!) that he hoped I wouldn’t wear “something all funny with the ankles showing”. Epic fail!! And I’m 5′9″, I really think I could’ve pulled it off….ah well. Big dinner out.

I love short dresses! I think they’re so much fun and would have definitely considered one if I wasn’t getting married in the winter…

I had a short white dress that I changed into for the reception (Vietnamese bride, so I had 3 outfits). The short dress was actually a bridesmaid dress from Priscilla of Boston, and my mom made it stand out by making a crystal belt for me. I happen to call a shop that had the dress in my size - a customer that had changed her mind about the dress, and I scored the dress for the discounted price of $49.99 plus taxes!
