Scrumdiddlyumptious?

June 25th, 2010 @ 12:19 pm by Mrs. Turtle

Sure, candy buffets have become a pretty big trend at weddings. But are they overrated? Definitely not! Come on, who didn’t dream of getting a golden ticket after watching Willy Wonka as a kid? Everyone loves candy!

(How fake does that set look now though? Seriously!)

Well, I highly doubt our candy bar will live up to the standard set by Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate factory, but I predict that it will at least rival the Candyman’s shop!

Putting this thing together has been a true labor of love! My mom has been my creative partner throughout the whole ordeal. I showed her pictures like this:

… and she started researching bulk candy and collecting jars. Once we had all the jars, I did a little sketch to plan which candies would go best in which jars.

(A little bit has changed since then, but you get the idea!)

Once the candy arrived, we made a trip to the fabric store and bought some fabric and a variety of ribbons to add some style. I made some little labels to tie on to the jars. (Not because our guests don’t know what gummy bears are, but because labels make everything cuter!)

My mom bought me a sewing machine for my bridal shower, and I don’t know anything about sewing, so we also took the opportunity to get me started on developing some sewing skills. My mom is a great seamstress, so she helped me complete my first ever project: the candy buffet tablecloth!

Anyway, our candy table has definitely surpassed my expectations! I hope our guests like it! I think it should be a lot of fun and a great favor for them to take home to remember our day!

We still have some concerns though, like having the right amount of candy and being afraid that the candy will melt at our outdoor wedding. Who else is doing a candy buffet? (Or maybe a cookie one, or an ice cream one!) Do you guys have any tips to share?

Great pics, thank you! We’re doing a dessert buffet, having a ceremonial cake…and then a chocolate fountain with all of the fixings (poundcake squares, fresh strawberries, pretzel rods, graham cracker sticks, marshmallows, etc) and then some cookies, cupcakes and pastries. I can’t wait!

We’re doing a small candy buffet. While most people work around a color scheme, we’re just going to have our favorite candy. I think the hodge-podge look they will create will go great with the rest of the wedding. So far we’re going to have Reeses Eggs that I stockpiled at Easter, peanut m&ms, gummi bears, laffy taffy and either peppermint patties or Andy’s mints. I’m also probably going to throw in some Oreos for good measure. And maybe Nutter Butters.

Oh, and I meant to mention that mine will either go under a covered area or an umbrella. Would either of those be options for you?

We’re doing a sweet and salty buffet so that those who can’t have sweets can still partake in the yummies :)

I am having a candy bar as well… I love all things vintage so we are focusing on a retro/nostalgic candy bar. I found all of our jars at Home Goods and some serving pieces at flea markets. I am cutting out the labels on my cricut machine… at least going to attempt it and making a banner that says “Love Sweet Love”. I also have to share these fabulous treat bags - http://www.etsy.com/listing/49528909/96-striped-candy-treat-or-gift-bags. Love them!Just wondering what fonts you used for your labels? Hope your candy bar turns out great!

No candy bar for me. McGroom says it’d be too much money and we’re spending enough already. Boo!

What a great candy selection! Any chance you’d share your templates for those gorgeous candy jar labels?

Can’t wait to see the final pics! I was thinking of doing some sort of candy buffett instead of paying for the reception place’s overpriced appetizers.

We are doing a candy bar too, but haven’t bought the candy yet since we are still several months out. Do you have any recommendations on where to buy bulk candy? Did you use any online vendors?

@Brighteyes: Wow! That definitely sounds like Willy Wonka status!
@Twista: That sounds so fun! We’re actually doing some draping above it with white chiffon hung on 6′ shepherd’s hooks.
@lindseyboo: Yours sounds sooo amazing! I would love to see pictures! I love those bags, I wish I would have found those earlier! Great find! I had been looking for striped ones, but we ended up finding some cute ones anyway! And the fonts I used are Feel Script and Academy Engraved, the same as I used on our invitations!
@MsDaisyB: @devotedharmony: I designed the labels in Illustrator. I would be happy to put together some templates when I get some time. PM me if you’re interested!
@jordynrose: My favorite site that we ended up using was CandyWarehouse.com! Good luck with yours!
