About Mrs. Star

So I know I’ve kind’ve left you hanging on the Reception pictures. My bad. Please forgive me?

I’ve already written before about how one of our incredibly generous friends gifted us his professional DJ services (thank you, thank you, thank you, Rob!). He pretty much saved our butts on that front, because I didn’t think I could deal with much more planning by the time choosing what to do about music came around.

He did a great job of mixing in his DJ expertise with our carefully crafted “please play!” list. I mean, who wouldn’t want to dance along to stuff like this:

Play it! You know you want to.

Now it sounds like a party up in here.

We’re not usually huge party people or huge dancing people or anything like that, but let me tell you, the Stars know how to throw a party when the occasion calls for it:

Even my little sister and parents got in on the party action:

I took a moment out to dance with my new dad, too:

And Mr. Star took more than a few moments out to goof around with his high school buddies, whom he rarely gets to see anymore. You can see that the purple rock candy on a stick that I had places on the tables was a big hit:

And so were the masquerade masks. One of my favorite things that came about that night was how many brand new friends and connections were made:

Not to mention, my husband had a dance-off with his father and brothers…

… that ended in more than one back flip and handstand…

… and yes, that is my brand new husband doing the worm at our wedding:

Old pals shared laughter:

And our beautiful friends were the most lively and fun guests to be had:

There’s nothing like a good girl dance to have a great time:

A Star-studded (Love) Affair: Shake Your Booty : wedding nyc pictures pro pics recap Img 084 IMG_084

And we think the fact that a great percentage of our guest list was on the younger side made for the awesomely silly moments like this:

A Star-studded (Love) Affair: Shake Your Booty : wedding nyc pictures pro pics recap Img 091 IMG_091

But it wasn’t just the younger folk having a blast, my wonderfully un-Mother-of-the-Bride-like Mom was partying it up, too.

And many of our guests grabbed us to get a pose in with their masks:

Little Sister Star adored hers, too:

And we danced until the night was over and I quite literally couldn’t stand up anymore…

Many of our guests commented that we had the liveliest dance floor they’d ever seen at a wedding. I think it was the combination of our “younger” guest list, how fun our theatre kid friends are, the coolness factor of both of our families, the relatively small (80+) guest list, and the celebratory atmosphere we strove so hard to create that did it.

Are you planning on dancing it up at your wedding? What do you think will add to your party atmosphere?

A big sweaty dance party was so important to us too— we insisted that after we were introduced /had our first dance, the DJ play like 4 dance songs before people sat down for dinner. So many guests told us that it really set the tone… but I think the key element is what you guys did: get the bride and groom on the dance floor! It looks like you had so much fun!

Well, here’s an idea that could’ve worked for us (it didn’t, for a variety of reasons that have no bearing on the quality of the idea itself, I promise!), and might work for someone else, so here goes:

We’d been taking swing dance classes for YEARS by the time we got married, and whenever there’s a band playing anywhere in our area, one of the three rather large swing dance collectives will give a free half-hour class before the band starts, and during any breaks. Super basic: open position, closed position, usually one turn, two if you’re lucky. And this is East Coast swing, which you can dance to basically anything. Half an hour of this, and you’re free from the junior-high sway for life.

So we are not the kind of people who like bachelor/bachelorette parties, but we have the kind of friends who like to go to them, so we decided to compromise and have a big pre-wedding party. We rented out the Knights of Columbus hall (because the VFW hall was too fancy, that’s how classy this party was), got a license to serve beer for the night, and hired our dance teacher to do am hour-long basic class and then DJ the rest of the night.

I would love to report back that this resulted in a packed dance floor a week later at the wedding, but we ended up having to cancel the pre-wedding party because of a family emergency. But you have to admit: it should work.

Hall rental was $100, dance teachers were $100 (a steal because we knew them so well), liquor license was $20. Make everything else pot luck and you’re home free!
