Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

DIY Bride… Sort of

June 26th, 2010 @ 6:00 pm by Mrs. Knitting

Like many brides, I am planning to include a few DIY projects in our wedding. Here’s the thing though: I am not good at DIY projects. I’m not the slightest bit crafty. I can read anyone under the table, but I can’t sew a cushion cover or make a pretty scrapbook page to save my life. Creating an envelope liner seems impossibly difficult to me, although I’ve been informed it’s not. When other brides DIY, you would never know the project wasn’t done by a professional. With me, everyone will know.

Here’s an example of DIY work that just completely blows me away (and makes me feel inadequate!):

However, I think I’m okay with that. I want the wedding to be a reflection of me and Mr. Knitting and we certainly never do anything the slightest bit crafty normally. So while I’ll be putting lots of effort into my DIY projects, I’ve had to resign myself to the fact that they really will look like I did it myself and that’s okay because it’s an honest reflection of us. It’s even more okay because the more I look at DIY touches that actually look like they are homemade, the more I realize that I really really love this look.

For example:

Table numbers made out of mason jars and tea stained doilies (I love the flowers too, but suspect they aren’t DIY):

Cupcakes that I made for my older sister’s wedding (yes, I’m obnoxiously proud of them!):

Have you ever been intimidated by a DIY project?

I like your attitude :) All the DIY amazing-ness on the web can really get me down sometimes, but as you said, the wedding is a reflection of who you are as a couple, and we dont have to compare ourselves to others.
Those cupcakes you made look awesome btw!! I hope mine look as delicious as those when the time comes :)

P.S. random question: what type of frosting recipe did you use? (yes I am cupcake obsessed!)

It’s the Magnolia Bakery Vanilla Buttercream Icing. You may have come across the recipe before, but in case you haven’t here it is:

I’m a big fan.

See I almost have the opposite problem. I’m very crafty and have my own stationery shop. Which sounds all well and good BUT the problem is that every single project/cute little touch I see, I think “oh, I could do that.” And I probably could. But then I end up with an absolutely bananas DIY list. I have to really reign myself in and get a lot more realistic about my ability to complete the zillions of projects that I’ve decided t do. Sigh.

I remember seeing that first pic somewhere and being totally flabbergasted by it! But I think the bride might be a designer or something if that helps soften the blow . . . :)

My wedding is all DIY, so it’s scary and I don’t get it right the first time; I just keep trying though and it comes. Not perfect, but it comes.

I wanted to DIY sooo much of my wedding, incl favors, flowers and invites but now we’re having at least 400 people. . . so I’m intimidated by my whole wedding.

Wow seeing all these fabulous DIY projects makes me want to run out and get a degree in Art! I have what I’ll call “mediocre” talent with arts and crafts; I can sew, but hey, the pattern and fabric companies make it easy-sort of like putting a puzzle together. Original art? Not so much.

Miss Knitting be careful, you may find yourself in the wedding cupcake business! I’m swooning over your picture!

The lovely thing about DIY wedding projects these days is they are “meant to look like DIY” .. so an obvious handcrafted look is far preferable to anything that looks professionally produced.

These projects are stunning in their simplicity and originality; I love them all!

I am totally intimidated by DIY, but I am willing to give it the old college try. If it doesn’t turn out, eh, whatever, I tried.

@Miss Pin Cushion: Yes, I think you’re right. Still…
@Miss Trail Mix: That’s actually pretty reassuring. Thank you!
@lisalew5472: Thanks! That’s so sweet.

I have an Art degree but I STILL wouldn’t be able to make that first invitation you mentioned! Uh-may-zeeng!

The problem I have is that I like too many different styles and am the most indecisive person! Planning my wedding has been a challenge to say the least…

BTW: Those cupcakes look delicious!!!

I DEFINITELY agree with you it can be overwhelming to see all the adorable DIY stuff on wedding sites. since you definitely have a talent for things like those cupcakes, pick 1 or 2 things that you know you’d be good at, and spend time on those and really have those details stand out. then you won’t have ot worry about much other of the diy stuff “standing out”
