Mrs. Earrings's Picture
Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

There comes a time when your inspiration levels reach saturation point. Too many “ooh, look at that! we could do that too…” moments can result in me being a very overwhelmed girl. I know I can’t include everything I fall in love with, but it is so hard not to want to when bombarded with gorgeous images from multiple sources of wedding media (I blame myself… I just can’t keep myself from the pretty pictures. They are bridal crack).

So when I stumbled across these inspiration questions in an old Snippet & Ink post I felt like I had finally come across something that can keep me focused and result in a wedding that is more cohesive than all over the place. Which is a very good thing.

Here are the questions, and my answers that I wrote in bed one night so I could actually fall asleep without a million ideas racing around in my little brain (it really does help to get it down on paper):

1. What season is it?

  • January- an NZ summer.

2. What is the mood of the event? Is it formal, casual, or something in between? Is it grand or intimate? Sophisticated? Playful?

  • Something in between (ha I like being on the fence). Whimsical, romantic, untamed with an eclectic hippy twist. Family intimacy.

3. What is the location? Inside or out-of-doors? How can I play up the local/regional elements? Does the architecture/ scenery inspire me?

  • Gardens of the World, New Zealand. Outdoors (obviously). It is important to us not to detract from the natural setting.

4. What single element can tie everything together? Is it a theme? A certain flower or fruit?

  • Lace.
  • Our rough palette: the purple family (they’re a friendly bunch), soft pink, grey, sage green
  • Theme: Whimsical garden picnic. Lavender. Baskets.
  • So I couldn’t pick one thing. But I think any one of those items above could stick out as a theme/motif to tie our wedding together. But primarily the lace.

5. How can I stretch this idea? What is unexpected but fits perfectly with all the other aspects?

  • Ribbons, vintage buttons, rose buds, baby’s breath, mismatched china, lace doilies, picnic tables, lace-covered votives, shortbread, acoustic guitar, flower girl with bare feet, sweet tea, soda bar, more baskets, retro Mexican food cart, tea and coffee station, teacups, cheesecake, lavender hearts, rustic wooden signage, lace parasols, Beatles music, lounge cushions, decks of playing cards, compostable utensils, fresh-picked berries and apricots, galvanized tubs, children with candy, mason jar vases…

I could go on. Anyway, what this has done for me is helped me focus on elements that will actually build on themes we have going on. This means I can whittle down my giant list of details to only include those elements, and, in doing so, calm my buy mind down. The “collect inspiration” period is coming to an end, the “let’s do it” period has begun (yay!).

To end this post, Carly over at Inspiring Brides posted this sweet inspiration board for me. Ha I just couldn’t resist a *little* more inspiration. :) Carly has been doing inspiration boards for a while and her blog is full of good ideas for those of you who are still in the “collecting” stage. Go check her out!

I had to stop going to certain blogs that overwhelmed instead of inspired! I think we settled on colors first, then DIY/handmade as the thread for everything else.

Ugh, I know what you mean! It’s been hard for me to filter all of the crazy amounts of inspiration out there! There are so many awesome ideas, it’s hard to pick and choose what’s right for you without going too overboard!

i understand what you meant by that and the hardest part for me was narrowing down what we needed to do and what we couldn’t do

This is a great post - so helpful when you’re feeling pretty overwhelmed with options and narrowing it down starts to feel impossible!

Great idea! I recently stopped reading all the wedding blogs in my blog reader (um… obvs except weddingbee) because all the unattainable “inspiration” was driving me batty — and just confusing all the plans I’ve already made!
