Ms Seahorse's Picture
Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
About Ms Seahorse

So you’ve heard part 1 and part 2 of our excellent engagement party, and hopefully I can tell you about the rest of it in this last post! After the scavenger hunt madness died down, we collected in the living room for a competitive round of Seahorse&Fancee Jeopardy!

For the purposes of showing how awesome my sister is, and how clever this jeopardy set-up was, I will disclose in writing that our names begin with M (me) and D (her). My awesome sister incorporated the first letters of our names into each category:

How to Throw an Awesome Engagement Party, Part 3 : wedding boston engagement party 21 2

How to Throw an Awesome Engagement Party, Part 3 : wedding boston engagement party 31 3

How to Throw an Awesome Engagement Party, Part 3 : wedding boston engagement party 4 4

Some of the questions (and answers) were:

  • Where was their first unofficial date? (at a work event… teehee, dating coworkers is a good idea?)
  • What was Fancee’s motto on their first date? (“Flirt more, think less.”)
  • Who named Daphne? (Fancee did! Again, I’d like to point out that this whole dog thing was her idea.)
  • Who proposed first? (I did!)
  • What “alternative” holiday do Seahorse and Fancee celebrate in December, and what do they do on that day? (Solstice, go for a walk in the woods.)
  • What body parts are missing from one of Fancee & Seahorse’s cats? (At the time, acceptable answers were a toe or an eye, but now we can add teeth to the list - he had them all out a month later. Poor One-Eyed Jake.)

The board, in all its glory:

We made an effort to have the teams be more or less even and comprised of people who knew both of us. I don’t remember what all the teams’ names were, but they were clever and silly. I think one of them was Team Fabulously Good Looking.

How to Throw an Awesome Engagement Party, Part 3 : wedding boston engagement party 6 6

A portion of said team looking fabulously good.

How to Throw an Awesome Engagement Party, Part 3 : wedding boston engagement party 7 7

Again, I don’t remember all the team names exactly, but these wonderful people were members of a team called something along the lines of Team Third Place. You can see the confusion on their faces.

How to Throw an Awesome Engagement Party, Part 3 : wedding boston engagement party 8 8

This is a portion of Team Kangaroo, or something equally irrelevant. They could also be referred to as Team Mom, since both of our moms were on this team, and no one else seemed to participate much. Team Mom won!

How to Throw an Awesome Engagement Party, Part 3 : wedding boston engagement party 9 9

My lovely sister, who put everything together and MCed the game.

How to Throw an Awesome Engagement Party, Part 3 : wedding boston engagement party 10 10

The lovely Fancee, who kept score and drank tea. She’s so pretty.

After the game was over and we handed out the prizes, people began to drift away and had more dessert and tea. After a little bit, my sister returned from retrieving some food in the kitchen and said, “All the gay boys are clustered around the coffee, wondering how you know all these things!”

Apparently it has now been determined that lesbians remember every little details (dates, who said what, etc.) and gay men don’t even think of those things! The guys kept saying, “Do you know where our first date was?” “No, do you??”

I’m not sure everyone does, but I remember dates and Fancee remembers details, so between the two of us, we can put together some pretty impressive Jeopardy questions!

Coming up with the questions was really fun and a nice little trip down relationship-memory lane. What kinds of questions would you come up with?

Looks like so much fun! One of our questions that I think will (Having our party in 2 weeks :) ) stump everyone will be “did L and M kiss on their first date”? I think that everyone will think that we did, we are very “touchy feely” now, but were too shy to kiss on our first date!

Yay! I love that you celebrate winter solstice. Me too! (But then again, it typically falls on my birthday.)

My fiancee’ and I met at work too! She was technically my boss… We were hired on the same day… We flirted over the merchandise until I got up the guts to ask her to hang out with me outside of work via text message. I don’t work there anymore- but now we’re getting married :)

Also- she’s seven years older than me- and I feel like it doesn’t matter terribly. Or at all, to be quite honest.

(Also, also: I never wanted to get married until I met her- then I wanted to marry her the day we first held hands- so I don’t think you’re crazy for thinking about marriage five weeks into your relationship).
