There’s this debate about the rituals of wedding receptions. A debate I had no idea existed until I ventured into the online wedding community. The pros and cons of bouquet tosses, garter tosses and other customs are beyond me; I just know that they ended being some of the most ridiculous, hilarious, wonderful moments of our reception. Just look:
We had originally planned on cutting the six inch “top tier” but at the last moment, went with a cake on the end. I thought the label tent in front of it said “Red Velvet Cake” and I was excited!
We had five cake flavors, four of which I absolutely loved and one that Mr. P loves but I truly detest. We cut ourselves a healthy slice…
And, of course, what was that cake that we happened to cut? Well, I said “euw!”
The one cake I dislike more than anything- carrot cake! It was HILARIOUS.
I distinctly remember turning to those around us—my mom, and some friends—and saying “It’s F*CKING CARROT CAKE! I HATE CARROT CAKE!” Classic, y’all, classic.
But luckily, Mr. Pencils loves it. So I grabbed him a big piece and may or may not have threatened to get some on his nose.
Being the sweet guy that he is, Mr. P was careful to only give me the cream cheese frosting, which I do like…
But I was careful to be sure to get all of the frosting off so he couldn’t pay me back with some frosting on my nose…
Which Mr. P thought was pretty bull…
It just looks like I’m oddly sucking his finger. I swear, I just didn’t want to get frosted.
But he may have gotten me a teeny bit anyway. I always thought I’d be in the “no smashing at all” group. But I realize that I fall into the “little love frosting on the nose” group. Ah well.
Damned carrot cake.
As the staff cut the various cakes, we danced a bit more until it was time for the illustrious bouquet toss. Oh yes, get ready.
Our DJ played “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” while the women in the room lined up.
I scoped out the room…
Noticed where a cluster of some girls that I would have LOVED to see enjoy the embarrassment of catching the flowers…
Prepared my shot…
and let ’er rip!
Anyone else see the one girl with her hands NOT up in the corner?
Oh yeah. Bridesmaid Ann Marie….
She was non too pleased with my obvious aim.
I couldn’t help but LAUGH!
She HATES being the center of attention and used to really hate mushy-gushy stuff. Perfect!
Then it was time for Mr. P to…beg for my garter?!?!
Not… awkward… at… all.
And he may have made this ritual a bit… risque…
Oh yes, there were teeth involved. Of course.
Oh yeah, did you notice my hair went flat? Yeah, me too. Oh well! Such is life!
Finally, Mr. P was able to toss the garter. He had the men line up as well (equal distribution of awkward here, friends!).
Did we mention that Ann Marie has a serious boyfriend? Yep, potential for extreme awkward here people! What if someone else caught the garter and had to put it on her? EEP!
But Mr. P was too smart. Smarter than me.
He handed it off after calling his long shot.
Right in the arms of Ann Marie’s man. Phew.
Then it was time for the wonderful sharing of the garter-ness. Doesn’t Ann Marie look SO excited?!
And he was made to crawl and beg too…
And he made it REALLY risque!
!!!

It looks like you all had soo much fun!! I cracked up at the cake part….if that happened to me I prob would have cut into another cake…this is the reason we picked two flavors that we both absolutely loved!
Fellow carrot cake hater here! We served it at our wedding but it was the only flavor cupcake with white icing so it was easy to avoid.
Looks like your tosses were fun. We didn’t do it because we only have a few single friends and they are all pretty shy people, and we didn’t want to embarass anyone by forcing them into the center of attention.
I can only hope that our wedding is half as much fun as yours… I love that it was such a party!
Since we caught the garter and bouquet at the last wedding we went to, we’re really excited about the tosses. Granted there was no putting the garter on my leg. I’ve never seen that before.

The same thing happened to me at a friend’s wedding before we were engaged, I caught the bouquet and Mr TM caught the garter, then put it on me in front of the entire crowd!! SO EMBARASSING but so fun, as all your pictures look as well!

PS- I would’ve had the same reaction to carrot cake. Yuck!
The same thing with the “dreaded, hated cake flavor” happened to me as well. We have this awesome photo of me in full disgusted snarl when I realize it’s coconut cake instead of the white chocolate-raspberry we thought we were cutting. 6 cakes, 5 I loved, and we pick the 1 I hated. At least it makes for fun photos!

muhahahaha. LOVE the reaction to the carrot cake. that would have been mine too. i detest carrot cake while the mister loves it.

I am happy to see there is someone else that hates carrot cake! Every wedding I have been to for the last year has had carrot cake as their wedding cake! I have been disturbed. Your face is precious when you realize it is carrot cake!
Looks like you guys had a lot of fun and got some great photos! Man if we were doing a variety of cake flavors you can bet one would be carrot cake, the sample our baker made was decadent - but it’s not for everyone.

That’s so funny that it was carrot cake! Too cute though! As someone who was going to toss those traditions out the window, you’ve made it look so much fun that I’m almost reconsidering!!
BTW–your hair still looks gorgeous even though the curls fell! You have the kind of hair I’d kill for!! Are you going to keep it long or do a PWC?
