Honeymoon Blues

June 28th, 2010 @ 10:43 am by Mrs. Knitting

Mr. K and I realized today that we can’t afford a honeymoon and that sucks a lot. I’m not really sure how we didn’t realize this before since our finances didn’t magically change today, but I guess we didn’t really think it through. The original plan was to go to Hawaii for two weeks after the wedding. Unfortunately, between my big Europe trip this past May, Mr. Knitting’s grad school fees and conferences (neuroscience on a cruise ship anyone?), our upcoming short trip to visit my older sister and her husband in Vancouver, and, oh yeah, the wedding, a honeymoon is just not going to happen. Stupid being young and poor…

Mr. Knitting working hard at his neuroscience conference on a Caribbean boat cruise:

Honeymoon Blues : wedding honeymoon toronto 2010 03

BM Melbourne and I in Antibes:

Honeymoon Blues : wedding honeymoon toronto 198

My excuse for visiting Vancouver:

Honeymoon Blues : wedding honeymoon toronto N501063

However, after getting over my initial disappointment, I’m surprisingly okay with this. Clearly we’ve both had lots of fun and adventures this year and we’ll have lots of exciting trips to look forward to in our future. It’s okay that we can’t do one of them right after the wedding. I still get to marry my favourite person and really, what more can I ask for?

We’re now trying to decide if we would like to still have a minimoon and go away for a few days over Christmas or if we should stay in Toronto. I like the idea of going away because I suspect we’ll be a bit family-ed out after the wedding and will want some alone time, but it will also be the first Christmas I won’t be spending with my family and I’m not sure if I might find that a bit upsetting.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a great minimoon that’s a relatively short plane ride away from Toronto?

Porter! Montreal, Quebec City, Chicago - all great spots, and so easy to fly out of the city. There are all tonnes of 20% sales to watch for: http://www.flyporter.com

The coolest, most romantic honeymoon I’ve heard about was a local honeymoon where they camped for a week, did various things outdoors, and had champagne every night. It just sounds so sweet and fun while still having time away. Now I have no ideas about where to go near you, but you can certainly still have a great trip.

P.S. We may end up doing something like this too.

I HIGHLY reccommend doing something, even if it’s only for a few days, after your wedding. Bask in your newly married bliss. Maybe try to find something within driving distance or see if you have a family member with a vacation home or something like that.

I think if you can, you should take a few days away. Your family will understand and it’ll be good to have that quiet time together. We too, can’t take a honeymoon right away (though due to my school scheduling, not finances) but are instead planning two awesome vacations for next year. Look to the future but take advantage of what you can do now.

I’m sorry you can’t afford a honeymoon! :( But I definitely think you should try to at least take a small vacation if you can, because it will probably feel so good to get away after all of the stress from the wedding!

I live in the GTA so here are some ideas that you can drive or take the train to. We do alot of traveling in the province.

1. Blue Mountain Resorts- a little ski town that has just about everything you want for a mini-moon.

2. Niagara-on-the-lake or Stratford, On- it’s cliche I know but it’s super close!

3. Buffalo, NY - lots to do in this nearby city - maybe even look into the NY area that Buffalo is in to see what is there.

4. Quebec- Close enough to visit Montreal or Quebec City

5. Ottawa- this city is amazing at this time of year!

6. Detroit, MI - it’s only 4.5 hours away - and it’s not at all as bad as the movie make it out to be- lots of history in this great city plus they have great incentives for Canadians as Windsor, Ontario is literally across the river.

6. Any old historic inns - http://www.ontariosfinestinns.com/inn_members.asp - lots of great inn’s here that have amazing grounds in small towns that you could explore - most also have an in house spa!

Do you guys ski/snowboard? What if you went to Branff (sp?) or some other more local place where you could do active stuff, but then cozy up by the fire and drink wine at night for a couple of days? We ended up renting a house in Colorado for our minimoon (it is on the way back to Boston from our San Diego semi-destination wedding), so that would be the Canadian version for you :-)

Hi there! Omg I feel your sadness about no honeymoon. My FI and I are getting married in Sept and with my return to Grad School, the Europe trip last year, the new mortgage, and the wedding costs… it just can’t happen right now. We’re especially on edge because the economy in Calgary is still very fragile.

Although it’s been years since I’ve been out east, why don’t you guys do a weekend in NYC, out at niagra falls, or even to Montreal or Quebec City? Having been born in Montreal I know that Old Montreal is just beautiful!! :)

Aww, I’m sorry! I would definitely recommend taking a few days to relax, though. Even if you just take a short drive (an hour or under) to a cabin or something. The hubs and I did a cheap honeymoon by staying in an Inn in Vermont for a week, and if we had only stayed for a weekend, it would have been crazy cheap! It was so nice to just escape family members for a while. Your brain and sanity will depend on it :)

Halifax!!! :) Porter Airlines flies out of Toronto Island Airport and usually have really decent prices for flights. And they have great in-flight service.

Visit Montreal! You wouldn’t even need to fly!

We are taking our honeymoon 3 months after the wedding. Everyone keeps giving me slack that it isn’t a “real honeymoon” then, but I won’t be changing my name until right after so it sure will feel like it!

Go to Stratford! There’s lots to do even when the theater festival isn’t in full swing, and there will be far, far, fewer tourists in the off-season, of course.

We’re doing a mini-moon and at first I was a bit disappointed too, but as time has gone on, I’ve gotten more and more excited about it! We’re going to the Finger Lakes in NY and Niagara–that’s not too far from you! There are about 100 wineries in the region and we’re definitely going to visit quite a few of them! Not sure if that’s your style, but I’m super excited about it!

That sucks you can’t go on your honeymoon! But you could maybe still do a delayed honeymoon, for your one year anniversary?

bummer! do you know anyone who travels a lot for work? Maybe they can gift you hotel or airline points? That’s how we’re swinging a honeymoon, it just leaves us responsible for renting a car (woot woot for hotwire!), food and activities. We’re budgeting $1000 for 10 days, that’s $100/day to feed and entertain 2 people, totally doable!

Why not just getaway for a few days to Niagara Falls? You don’t have to spend the $ on airfare, it’s beautiful, and it’s a traditional honeymoon destination!

Aw, I feel your pain! Although we could afford a honeymoon, we had to cancel ours because Mr. B got a new job and they wouldn’t give him the time off! However, I am hearing more and more that couples are planning their honeymoons for their year anniversary instead of right after the wedding…so I’m hoping that means that Mr. B and I are going to be “trendy…” haha!
