Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Like a Sheep, I Got Sheared

June 28th, 2010 @ 5:56 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

I know, I know - everybody does it after they get married. There’s even an acronym for it: PWC (Post Wedding Chop). And not that I’m normally one to follow the masses and jump off a cliff just because my friends did (who else heard that from their mom all the time growing up?), but I had finally had enough of my long hair. Although, looking through everyone else’s PWCs, it does appear we all end up going from long straight hair to the same general short style! Maybe that’s ’cause it’s awesome. ;)

I present to you, my Before hair:

(Right before going to my appointment)

This is pretty much the exact haircut I’ve rocked for… oh, about 26 years (apart from a short stint in 7th grade which we shall never talk about again). What can I say, it met all my criteria: no hassle (tucks behind ears and goes into ponytail easily), air dries well, requires zero thought in the morning.

But with the near 100 degree heat and 1000% humidity (OK fine it’s ’only’ 60% today) we’ve been hitting in Baltimore, and my desire to maybe finally have a hairSTYLE, I got my hairs cut!

And it’s super short in the back, too (well, short to me anyway).

It feels wonderful to have all that length gone (although it wasn’t enough for me to donate anywhere), but I’m still getting used to the bangs. I had to invest in some headbands too (thanks to the recommendations of some short-haired friends) for things like working out, because I can just barely pull together the smallest ponytail in the world, but it all falls out quickly because my hair is thin and slippery!

It’s sort of weird to me that for my entire life, I’ve been fine and happy with my hair but I get married and suddenly, “ohhhh let’s chop it all off!” Sure, in the past I sometimes kept it a little shorter, sometimes grew it a little longer, but generally it’s always been a straight-across-the-bottom cut, parted on the side, straight straight straight (that’ll never change), and no ’style’ to it. What is it about the fact that I just got married that made me itch to get a different hairstyle? As though one big change (I have a husband?!) isn’t enough, I wanted to throw in a don’t-recognize-myself-in-the-mirror change too? Maybe it’s because I’m like - well, if I look terrible with short hair, he’s stuck with me now!! Muwahahah. (joking!)

Regardless, I love it. And the fact that I actually like having hair this short and different has given me the confidence to try new styles more often. Although, I do think I’m done experimenting with hair color in my life - after having had blue, purple, blond, and black hair, I have finally come to the conclusion that there is a reason I’m naturally a brunette. :)

Did you jump on the bandwagon with a PWC? Why is there even a phenomenon of the PWC? Why don’t we just keep our hair the way we like it for the wedding in the first place?!

LOVE the hair cut.

When I got married the 1st time, I chopped a whopping 19 inches off my hair the day after the wedding. I felt like a new woman.

This time, i had to promise to keep my hair the way it is. he says I can trim it, buty he likes it long.

Great cut Mrs. GP! I’m not married yet and decided to throw the what little length I could grow out (curly hair just keeps working northward on my head!) and cut it the way I like it all the time. Of course finding the hair style for the wedding day is hard but I’m going to be fine with it because the skraggly look on the ends was about to drive me mad!

Looks great. :)

I know I’ve always got dramatic haircuts after break-ups… maybe getting a big change haircut after a wedding is also a reaction to a big change? After all, in theory there are no more traumatic relationship changes to send us into hair cutting tizzies, so this is the last big one? Before babies, that is? ;)

Cu-te. :)
PWC is probably a response to having to grow our hair out for the whole. freaking. engagement. Practically the next thing my FI said after proposing is, “Could you not cut your hair for the wedding, either?” Can’t WAIT - jealous…just moved to Baltimore myself and it’s smouldering :(

Mrs. GP, I adore it!! Such a cute style on you!

Mr. N loves my hair long so I promised I would postpone my PWC for a little bit. Just ended up cutting bangs for now which I’ll grow out, then I’ll be chopping away. I told him I bought him about 6 more months with my long hair. Seriously, having my hair the same way for so long is like torture to a hair stylist!!

I’ve always wondered about your last question–why so many gals feel the need to grow their hair out for the wedding! Hair at any length can be pretty, and I think some of the shorter styles are really fun and sassy, including your new ‘do!
