About Mrs. Socks

You wanna know why I picked the little Socks icon? It’s actually very poignant to not only my wedding planning, but my day-to-day life.

I sweat.

No, but really. I sweat a LOT.

I was born with what’s called hyperhidrosis, and it’s an overactive nervous system that causes sweating in my hands and feet (some people have it on the face and underarms as well).

Much like this, though that isn’t me. Both my hands and feet look like that.

Oh yeah, and it’s constant. Not just when I’m nervous or hot, though it gets worse when those two factors weigh in.

When I was 14, I had surgery to fix this issue for my hands. Unfortunately it didn’t completely help my hands and had no effect on my feet, which sweat much like the picture above.

Nowadays, I take daily medication to try to keep it all in check, and some days are better than others. I’ve tried Botox twice (it’s supposed to paralyze sweat glands or something) but that didn’t work. Topical gels and antiperspirants don’t do any good either. When it comes to wearing material that isn’t absorbent—say like, heavy satin, silks, and poly-blends—my sweating is worse.

It’s also worse when I don’t have socks on.

This is my footwear, every single day of my life:

Sexy, right?

I wear these thick fuzzy socks every day to keep my feet happy. They’re expensive socks that wick away moisture and most people only use them for running and hiking. I also wear them under a pair of boots every work day. Even in 90+ degree heat, I’ll wear a pair of heeled boots to work simply because I can wear socks inconspicuously that way.

I don’t wear flip-flops or sandals, open-toed shoes or pumps, or any other super cute shoe for that matter. When I do wear those kinds of shoes, I slip, slide, swell and suffer. My feet are also too soft (from sweating constantly) to form calluses, so usually strappy shoes (or even just flip flops) just cut right into my skin, I bleed, and then have icky scars.

(Side note: I’m really, really sorry to be this disgusting, but I’m getting to the point.)

With this issue, I was extremely hesitant about wedding dresses and wedding shoes because I know that a big part of my wedding day will be affected by my sweating. I try not to let it affect my day-to-day life (though it sucks in the summer because I want to wear flip flops & cute shoes BADLY), but on my wedding day, it’s unavoidable: I’m wearing a dress that isn’t very absorbent, and I’m wearing shoes that won’t look good with thick white socks.

I’ve been trying to go over my options on what to do about this, and here’s what I’ve come up with:

  • Put some absorbent little towlies in my dress pockets
  • Wear thick hose that feel a little like socks
  • Go through iontophoresis again

Wondering what the third thing is? They’re little shallow trays that I fill up with water and plug them into a device that sends a low electric current through the water. Think—a mild electrocution. It’s supposed to plug up or paralyze the sweat glands or something. I’ve tried it before, but with no success since it was too painful to keep up consistently.

Why the EFF are these chicks smiling??? Dude, ELECTRIC CURRENTS are ripping through your body! I do NOT smile during these treatments!

I think for my wedding, I might just have to suck it up and try the treatments again.

I decided to share this because I know that there are a lot of people who have hyperhidrosis, and too many are embarrassed to talk about it. It’s a small thing on a scale of what could be worse, and it’s not the end of the world, but it is a condition that I have to consider a little too often when picking out clothes and shoes.

One of my biggest fears is that my hands will sweat and swell so badly on my wedding day that the photographer won’t get good pictures of my ring, or that when Mr. Socks puts my wedding band on my finger, that it won’t fit because I’ll be too sweaty and swollen. I also fear my feet being so uncomfortable that I won’t be able to walk by the end of the night, which is basically what happened at my sister’s wedding.

So there you go: I hope you aren’t too grossed out, and I hope that if you’re dealing with any medical issues for your wedding you find solutions that will make you happy. I hope that the happiness of the day far outweighs the discomfort I’ll feel as a sweaty little mess.

Do you have any physical hurdles to overcome in regards to your wedding day?

Although I have no physical ailment to overcome at my wedding, I truly appreciate you talking about this because talking makes people aware of something of which they may have had no idea before. (I do this when I talk about loosing my baby at 8.5 months because I believe making people aware of things they may not know is very important even if it makes people uncomfortable.) I had no idea anything like this existed and truly hope that your electrocution works (because it sounds awful) and you can dance, enjoy yourself all night, while feeling like the most beautiful woman who ever lived.

my husband and I know the leading neurosurgeon in the world that fixes this problem. They just clip the nerve in your underarm and it goes away. They say it is the most satisfying surgical procedure because the results are immediate. Have you considered it?

This is a great post. I’ve heard that this is apparently a somewhat common ailment. I have a mild form of it as well.

Are you wearing a long dress for your wedding? Perhaps you could wear your socks with running shoes? No one will notice… or at least change into them half way through the night…?

Totally agree with the previous post. I really appreciate you sharing your story and your challenge with us. I’m sure you’ll hear from some fellow Bees in your same boat — and I hope you get some awesome suggestions from the Bee community. My only advice is to do and wear whatever makes you the most comfortable. It’s critical that you be comfortable on the day you marry your best friend.

Oh man, that sounds rough, sorry to hear about this! I think all three of those options combined might be your best bet…And hopefully you’ll be so happy and glowing on your wedding day, the sweat won’t even be noticeable!
And for what it’s worth, I was a hot, sweaty mess by the end of our wedding…And I kicked off my shoes by about 8:30, so you can always do that and rock the socks, bar mitzvah style!

You could get a really cute pair of Doc Marten boots or something, add some attitude to the outfit!

Thanks for sharing your story. I think sometimes I get hung up on little things, like trying to shrink my ginormous pores before the big day, or toning my arms, or whatever. It’s nice to be reminded again and again that the marriage is the big deal here.

Good luck with the electrical treatments, that sounds like a pain…literally!

These probably are not the kind of socks you need…likely not wicking enough, but I thought I’d share them anyway….

That doesn’t sound like fun! :( I’m sure that if you take the precautions you mentioned you’ll be fine, though. And I have a feeling you’ll be so busy having fun on your wedding day, you won’t even notice the sweat!!

oh my that sounds like a tough ailment to be dealing with..here I thought I had a hard time finding shoes because my feet are wide…..the only health related issue that I am truly worried about on our big day is my FIs health….under times of high stress his epilepsy can act up…I have a fear that it could happen on our wedding day and I pray that it won’t be a problem, but you never really know.

I’m so sad that you have to worry about this for your wedding day. Hopefully it’ll be cold enough on your wedding day that it’ll be comfortable for you and you’ll be able to enjoy your whole day.

Wow, I never knew this was a real condition! Thanks for sharing.

Are you up for wearing cowboy boots a la Mrs. Cherry Pie on your wedding day? That way, you could wear your socks so you can be comfortable, and still be able to look sassy and cute :)

Have you considered wearing boots with your dress? It seems to be suprisingly common Ms. Cowboy boot wore a nice pair in the style of her mnamesake and Mrs. DG’s Fluvogs looked great under her dress.

I love @Mrs. Cupcake’s suggestion!

Is it possible to find any very low socks which you could wear (in the summer AND on your wedding day) which would still wick away the moisture? I know there are very short socks on the market which come down below the ankle and scoop down to almost your toes - they essentially just cover your toes and about an inch all around your foot.

How about Chuck Taylors? They come in every color under the sun and I think a Bride with Chucks is one sassy gal!

I second the quirky footwear: cowboy boots, docs, chucks, etc OR a really badass pair of high heeled booties that are so popular right now (sized 1/2 size up to accomodate your socks?).

Sounds like I’m not the only one. I’ve never really done any treatment though because I’m afraid of the side effects and mine doesn’t sound quite that bad. But I tried the prescription anti-perspirant before the wedding on hands, feet and underarms. It doesn’t seem to have done much but I’m not especially diligent with its use.

I feel for you. Good luck.

Miss Socks-
BOTOX!!!!!! I suffer(ed) from axillary hyperhidrosis for years and did all the funky crazy treatments (RX deodorant, iontopheroesis, etc) and nothing worked until I got botox. I get 6 months of sweat releif, and it only takes a minute per side. 90% of paitents get relief from excess sweating. It’s absolutely amazing, and it’s such a miracle that I found it. http://www.botoxseveresweating.com/ (It lists only for axillary, but it works on palmar and foot as well). It’s not as painful as you imagine it to be, but I’d deal with it for 10 mintues per pit to eliminate the sweat.

Please look into it, as it is the ONLY thing that has given me any sort of relief. Insurance does cover it (I pay my office copay and the copay for the brand name drug from my RX plan).
AND I see you’re in south Jersey, which makes it even better because my treating derm is in south jersey, and he is AMAZING!!!!

I just saw about botox….silly me….it takes an uber skilled and trained dermatologist to administer the botox. If you’re willing to try it again, I’d definitely seek out my derm. He’s been trained by the International Hyperhydrosis Society on the appropriate administration of botox. He told me the proper administration could be the difference between the treatment working and not working.

@jgkittymom3: That’s fantastic that botox worked for you! I might give your doc a call just to see, but both doctors I went to had great success rates with previous patients…maybe I’m just an anomaly :-(
