I Love Finding a Good Deal!

June 28th, 2010 @ 4:42 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

Early on in the wedding planning process, I found something that I fell in love with. This:

It’s adorable, no? Well, as much as I loved the look of it, and as much as I knew it was what I would want our cake to look like, I really just couldn’t get excited about cake. And, I realize that this sounds crazy coming from someone who loves dessert as much as I do, but I’m really just not a fan of cake. Especially wedding cake. I’ve never had one that I liked, so I guess I’m just biased against it.

You know what I do love, though?

Cupcakes. I understand that it makes no sense to like cupcakes but not cakes. I’m just weird like that. Even though I knew cupcakes as a cake are a huge trend right now, for some reason I just never considered it. I guess I though it would be more expensive than regular cake… until this afternoon. Somehow it just… hit me. Why not cupcakes? I want our wedding to look like these amazing inspiration photos:

NOM NOM NOM!!! These seriously make me drool a little. SO good! So anyways, once the inspiration hit me, I decided that just for the hell of it, I would email my favorite cupcake place in Austin, Be My Cupcake. Their cupcakes are seriously amazing. Like, there are no words for how good they are. I was kind of expecting it to be way too expensive, because as I said, I had this thought in my head that cupcakes would be way expensive. I emailed them, thinking I wouldn’t hear back for a while since they are closed on Mondays, but within an hour I had an email back from someone who told me that they charge $22.00 per dozen. At first, it sounded expensive… until I did the math. We’re only inviting about 100 guests, so we’d need about 8 dozen cupcakes, or 96 (assuming not everyone we invite shows up, which is a pretty safe assumption).

$176?! For our WEDDING CAKE? That is a freaking amazing deal. With that price, we’ll also be able to add on a top tier for cutting, and possibly even have it decorated a bit if we want to. AND this way, I can get 3 different flavors of cupcakes without it being too complicated. My problem with cake is that I really wanted red velvet as a flavor (I’m from the South, what can I say??), but it would be really complicated to have cream cheese frosting on one layer and buttercream on the other layers. This way I can get my red velvet cupcakes!!!

We haven’t made any official decisions, but right now we’re thinking we definitely want red velvet with cream cheese frosting and cinnamon with buttercream, but we have no idea about any other flavors. Sigh. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! We’re going to try to make a trip out there with Mom Cardigan next time we’re in town so that she can taste them, but Mr. Cardigan and I are pretty much set on the idea. I mean, how could we not be with a deal like that??!

Did you have any unexpected surprises when it came to the price of things?

Yummy! Just double check though, I know sometimes they recommend at least 2-3 cupcakes per person. Never know who might want seconds and all.

Thats so awesome! I agree with curlysue though, I know I’d probably want more than one of those yummy looking cupcakes!

Yuuuuuuum. I would definitely love me some cupcake right now!

I too would consider perhaps more in case some greedy cupcake eaters (yes…I am one of them) decide to take more than one. BUT even if you double what you have now, it is still not too bad price-wise when compared to a cake! Mmm…

I’ve only been to one wedding where people went to get a second slice of cake, and I can’t see that people would want to eat 2-3, but of course, I’m used to the 10 course Chinese wedding banquet and everyone is stuffed by the end to eat cake. Either way, you won’t have too many guests for it to make a huge difference in the price. Good deal!!

Yum! I would order a couple extra for the handful of people who will want seconds.

I’m the same way, I like cupcakes, but not cake! Our cupcakes ended up being more expensive than a cake would have been (because we needed to order a lot to fill our stand), but oh well. I too love the look of them!

Thats amazing! I love cupcakes too, like seriously I have everything with a cupcake! I just love them they are so cute. And I have an idea for you, now that you are thinking about a little cake on top of them (like the pics) you can actually make the place to decorate the cake and cupcakes like you wanted, like the very first pic. Well maybe the cupcakes will be a little harder, so you can still have your design in the cake and maybe cupcake toppers? Idk, but I think this may work!

YUM. My mouth is watering. I think with flavors like that more for seconds would be a good investment. And what a good deal! :)

For the number of cupcakes, it all depends on how big your meal is, if just the standard starter/main, I would go with 2-2.25 cupcakes per person. Also, what size are the cupcakes, there are many different sizes. If the cupcakes are going to be “help-yourself” during dancing and drinking, go with extra cupcakes. If you have multiple flavors, go with a bit smaller cupcake (not mini but a smidge smaller than the normal cupcake size) that way some people can try all the flavors.

And a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting between the layers all covered in butter cream is not complicated, don’t let any baker/pastry chef tell you so. I just did a carrot cake with two different types of cream cheese frosting, not hard at all.

Oh, man the flowers hit me hardest. I knew booze and catering would be expensive, but I thought for sure flowers would be no biggie. She definitely surprised us there, but she was worth the extra cost, we thought.

Mmm, sounds delish! Mr. Parfait and I are big on vanilla with vanilla frosting cupcakes, but we might be in the minority. : )

We had red velvet, vanilla, and chocolate cupcakes. We paid 88$ for 175 cupcakes and a top tier and they were seriously delicious! A sweet woman made them out of her home for us and I have never heard so many compliments on wedding cake. I don’t think you’ll regret your decision (though that first cake was awesome)
