The Sparklers that Won’t Be

June 28th, 2010 @ 10:16 am by Mrs. Earrings

I have very happy memories of my dad lighting sparklers for us kids as children. They were the most beautiful thing to me, but I was also terrified of them in all there fizzing and unpredictability. You know… they give you the kind of fear that you can’t help but want more of.

Photos like the one above inspired me to have a sparkler send-off at our wedding. Unfortunately the NZ government had to rain on my parade. New laws have banned sparklers from being sold by themselves, they must be sold in packs with other fireworks. Understandably, NZ has always enforced strict rules for when and how fireworks can be sold and used. But still.

Oh, well. It was a nice dream while it lasted. The one upside- I’m forced to not add yet another DIY project to my formidable list. The set-up below is nice though, yes?

Have you had to let go of one of your mini-wedding dreams because it just isn’t practical or your venue doesn’t allow for it?

That last one is my favorite pictures of wedding sparklers, and the sole reason I wanted them at my wedding. That being said, I am considering going with bubbles, because I am afraid of the kids with sparklers. There will be LOTS of kids, and sparklers aren’t the safest thing.

I had too….I wanted sparklers as well, I had it all made up in my head of how neat it would look leaving our reception until my dreams were crushed by the venue….NO OPEN FLAMES ALLOWED! So….trashed that idea! Pretty sure we are doing a petal toss now.

If it makes you feel better, the last wedding I went with sparklers was a DISASTER. There was a ton of smoke (I think they got the wrong kind), several people got burned (drunk guys with burning things = trouble), and because it wasn’t coordinated well, by the time the bride and groom left, a lot of peoples’ had burned out already.

Not to rain on anyone else’s sparkler-filled parade, but there are tons of other beautiful ways to be sent off without the potential problems sparklers sometimes bring!

I thought about sparklers because they’re so dang gorgeous, but I’m kind of terrified of them, so it probably wouldn’t work out too well! :)

I love sparklers! But we didn’t have a big send-off, we wanted something to add sparkle to our last song. And sparklers inside are just to dangerous….

But… my mom came up with another great idea. I even think it was more beautiful: “glow in the dark sticks”. When it was time for a final song, the lights were turned off, we were dancind in the middle of a large groop of family and friends and everybody had a couple of glow in the dark sticks. so magical. So special. <3

Maybe you can even make heart shaped pictures with these sticks?

Can you just buy sparklers online and have them shipped to you? Or would that be illegal also?

I love sparklers as well - but CA in the summer + our venue’s strict rules = no-no.

However, it might be good, because I had a similar experience to @HisButtercup - at a wedding of a FIREFIGHTER! Luckily a LOT of his fellow firemen were there & they used a variation of the “stop-drop-roll” technique (as interpreted by drunk firemen, it consisted of tackle the guy whose rented poly tux was in flames, and dog-pile him while slapping his body mercilessly). Unorthodox but effective. Luckily no one was hurt. And it was pretty funny… in a sick way!

well I have to say our sparkler dream was a disaster, I had wanted a group photos of everyone on the patio with the pond in the bcakground and the sparklers lit, well that didnt go so well. I guess I bought the wrong ones and sparks scared people and the pic was a disaster.. :( OH well.. if that is the only major thing that went wrong i’m ok with it. At least no one was hurt and in the end I can laugh about it. I am sure that when I see the photo it will be of everyone with a scared face rather than a smile lol

Sorry that your sparklers were banned, but maybe it is for the best. I’ve been burned by many a sparkler at weddings.

Aw, so sorry you can’t use the sparklers! But I’m sure you’ll come up with something equally as fun instead!

I went to a friend’s wedding and loved their send-off sparklers, and I really wanted to do them too. Our officiant though I was crazy for suggesting it, though, and quickly nixed the idea.

If you haven’t bought sparklers yet I would recommend http://weddingsparklersusa.com/ my sister bought a ton from them with a flat shipping rate of $12.00; I think she ended up with 3 cases of the 36″ Blackcat sparklers. We timed one before the wedding at 4 min. it was a real winner at the wedding! We got a lot of pictures of people having a great time!
