Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

Sorry, couldn’t resist. ‘Cause I’m 12.

Anyways.

I have this thing for paper. I love it. And I love crafts involving it, especially when it’s something slightly unexpected. So, when I came across these adorable little guys, I knew I had to incorporate them into our wedding somehow:

My Cute Little Balls and How I Plan to Use Them : wedding austin decor 12 1

(Source)

When I first found these, I was scanning through the intro of the tutorial and something jumped out at me.

“or put a bunch in a bowl, or in a hurricane glass in a bathroom or guest room.”

Hmmm… are you thinking what I’m thinking? Can’t you just see a bunch of these adorable things all tossed in a hurricane vase? Cute, right? I immediately started plotting it all out in my head and I couldn’t get over how cute I thought would look. Well, I don’t want to ruin the suspense, but I tried it out and I totally hated it. Well, hate is a pretty harsh word. It wasn’t bad, but I didn’t love it. And I want to LOVE my centerpieces, dangit!

I only did a trial with gray balls, and if I would have used actually done it for the wedding, I would have done yellow and gray. I also probably would have used a different vase (the vase I used is one that our venue provides for free), but I really don’t think that those changes would have been enough to make me love it. For those of you curious about it, here’s what it ended up looking like:

My Cute Little Balls and How I Plan to Use Them : wedding austin decor 22 2

It’s definitely cute, but it just doesn’t scream “centerpiece” to me, and I wasn’t happy with it. But, I had already created so many of these cute little balls (hehehe), and I am bound and determined to use them somehow. As of now, I’m thinking maybe I’ll string them all together and make a garland, unless you guys have any other great ideas!

I will post a tutorial later for how to put these little guys together (or you could just go to the source from the photo I posted and use that tutorial… but I promise mine will be way more entertaining).

Did you have a project that didn’t turn out as well as you hoped? Were you able to salvage it? Those balls are seriously cute, no? (Sorry. I promise, I’m done. For now.)

I think the color really throws it…the glass mutes the grey even more. Maybe they’d look better with only yellow ones?

Ohhh those are so fun! I love them! I’ve seen so many fun paper patterns in different stores, but never really knew what to do with it. This is a great project to incorporate lots of fun paper. Where the balls difficult to make? How long did it take you to make the balls in the hurricane glass? Hehe, trying to determine if I should add another “project” to my already very long project list. :)

I vote garland! I agree with afbacher though- maybe try some bright yellow in the vase? Whatever you do with ‘em- I LOVE your balls! (we’re all 12 right?) LOL.

I saw these too! My idea was to use them as some sort of pew decoration, needless to say, my project was a flop as well. They come out so much smaller than I thought they would!! I still think they would be cute for something. I like your idea better than mine, maybe adding some other decorative greenery or something else of the sort in the vase would help? Good luck.

Those are so cute but I agree with the above comments that a brighter color or using them as garland would be good. You could also try throwing some of that faux moss stuff in around the balls in the vase. Or if you do away with using them that way, you could make mammoth big ones to put over the dance floor. =)

Perhaps the balls would work well with various cylinder vases for your escort card table. You could also use each ball as an escort card holder by printing the escort card on yellow and pinning it like a mini-banner on the top. Also, they would look adorable as part of a larger tablescape centerpiece, perhaps nestled in amongst various yellow florals and candles? OR scrap them for the wedding and use them to decorate your new home! They would look adorable in a yellow bowl on your coffee table.

I have actually made these before and love them! My bf and I made these for our first christmas tree as funds were tight for buying decorations. I love them! Maybe use them to add some extra punch to the bathroom!

They will look great as a garland! And maybe some in pops of color?

I love them!!! Here’s an idea…insert some electric tea lights! They’re super cheap in bulk, and you can put them inside the little balls. It would make all the colors inside the vase pop and add a dimension I think you’re missing. Plus, that hurricane vase is a little blah, an interesting one with a pedestal bottom would make it really gorgeous and elegant. Garlands would be pretty too, especially if you’re doing a sleek asian feel to some of your wedding accessories. Can’t wait to see what you do!

What if you got cheap thin elastic at the craft store and hung then from the ceiling? I think the nonweight of them would make the elastic make them bounce up and down a bit. Or you could use them for the groom’s dinner.

Could you string a strand of Christmas lights through them to make them like lanterns and hang them somewhere???
