The Meaning of Manning

The Meaning of Manning : wedding ceremony providence venues Manning1 manning

This is where my family began.

My parents met at Brown University and were married at Manning Chapel 35 years ago. When Mr. Seashell and I began talking about marriage I honestly didn’t have a vision of where we would exchange our vows. But when Mama Seashell said, “What do you think about getting married about Manning?” I was immediately in love with the idea.

Getting married at Manning Chapel not only feels special because it is the place where my parents were married, but it feels like inheriting a legacy. To walk literally where my parents walked years before feels beautifully symbolic. I have been fortunate enough to have a strong and loving marriage modeled to me throughout my development. To stand in the very place where that marriage was born - and create my own - feels like a gift.

There will be guests present who witnessed my parents exchange vows in the very same place. They may sit in the very same seats. Thirty five years will have passed, but the sentiment is the same. They witnessed the beginning of a new family.

This is where my family began. This is where my family will begin again.

Ours is my Grandparent’s church. They’ve been members for close to 50 years. My Grandmother still attends every Sunday, even though my Grandfather passed away 9 years ago. The pastor won’t marry us because my FI & I are not members, but as a courtesy to my Grandmother, he’s letting us use the space with an officiant. I am beyond thrilled about it.

I knew I wanted to get married in the same church my parents did from the time I first started dreaming about my wedding as a kid. Another thing that made the church so special was my great-grandfather laid the brick for the sanctuary, so I felt a huge connection to the place.

So sweet. Ours is more important to him than me, its his schools chapel and there’s a lot of history behind it. Everyone was really happy when we chose it!

I’m getting married in the same church as my parents, too. They’ve been together 29 years.

I love it! I love the idea of inheriting a ritual… I think that’s such an important component of why weddings are so significant (at least in part).

How sweet! Since my parents and his parents are divorced, I could never imagine getting married at the same place as either of them.

As for us, we’re getting married at the place McGroom realized he loved me. We’re getting married at this fantastic place which overlooks the New River Gorge Bridge.

I’m a Brown alum too, but I was only there for one year for graduate school, so I didn’t get to mass. However, I LOVED walking by Manning and just admiring it. Such a gorgeous campus, I hope you get lots of pictures! :)

As for our ceremony site, we’re getting married at my church where I’ve been going my entire life. I’m not attached to our priest so we’re having my fiancé’s priest from his hometown church officiate. I’m so happy we were able to balance what was important to both of us.
