Mrs. Earrings's Picture
Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

And so the search continues for the magical idea that will grace the trees at our reception venue. The criteria: a) easy to DIY b) not too time-consuming (though I don’t mind time-consuming, as long as it is brainless enough so I can watch sappy movies at the same time) c) inexpensive and d) look snazzy (of course) without overwhelming the natural setting.

I love the look of Papel Picado… the lacy effect fits with our wedding, and these ones by aymujer on Etsy are drool-worthy:

Unfortunately they are also out of our price range.

These DIY ones with the hearts could be an option though:

Or lanterns? I’m not totally into paper lanterns, but these are sweet:

Or, more traditional hanging lanterns. Very romantic:

But I’m still not sold. I absolutely love ribbons, and there is something so romantic about ribbons blowing in the breeze, so this pic caught my attention:

And then I started thinking about different ways I could have ribbons in trees, and easy ways to get them there (the boys will be in charge of putting them up the morning of and I think *simple* may work out best for them).

So how about “ribbon chandeliers”?

I got the idea from Miss Ribbons:

But what I have in mind is something more ethereal for our garden setting so I set out to find more ribbon images, or ideas that involve a kind of “chandelier” look.

How about chandeliers of paper cranes or paper hearts? The paper hearts would be more appropriate for our wedding.

I think it is the above image that I am leaning the most towards. Simple and pretty. Yesterday I tea-dyed some lace and hung them on the line to dry, and when they blew in the wind they reminded me so much of this photo. Just gorgeous. I could still always make some simple “chandeliers” out of thin lengths of ribbon and lace.

So, I think I’m leaning towards that last idea but this dilemma may continue in the future. For now, I’m saving my sanity by pretending I have made a decision on the matter. Hmm… I guess I better go study for some exams now.

Or a last thought: I could just leave the trees in their nakedness and be done with it?

I need to stop thinking.

Which option do you prefer?

I thought about hanging ours in a tree too! It would’ve been more effective I think.. I really like the hearts and design sponge dealies.

For one of my engagement parties, the Hostess collected Mason Jars and put sand and candles in the bottom. She hung about 30-35 jars from wire in her large oak tree. It was completely breath-taking!!! It would be amazing for a wedding, so the Candles get my vote!

My trees will be naked; however, I love the last pic and the picture with the ribbons.

I love the aqua mason jar idea for the tree. We also did that! I just love aqua mason jars! We also put pink peonies in them. The pink just makes the aqua color POP! And they look so simplistic and beautiful with just a flower or two in them.

A lot of these could easily be recreated to match with any colour scheme! Loving the lace wedding dress in the fourth pic - just beautiful

I really like the ribbon chandeliers, but sometimes trees without any adornment look perfectly stunning. I would think twice about copying the last photo because if it isn’t done right it could look like the tree got toilet papered…
