I’m not really a ritzy kinda gal. My favorite places to eat are locally owned; I love consignment shops and parks. So after getting engaged, I started dreaming about our perfect wedding: A Rustic Summer Barbecue in the Park.

Basically, it’ll be more of a big ol’ party than a fancy-pants wedding. We’ve already picked the perfect place, a huge pavilion in a park by a river filled with picnic tables and a stage for our band, the Midnight River Choir. In my head I see two-stepping under thousands of Christmas lights, tin-can luminaries on tables covered in butcher paper people can doodle on, horseshoes and washers pinging in the background, boots and hats and s’mores and pie.

We have about four grand to pull everything together. Sometimes it feels like I’m on one of those old-school wedding shows from TLC when you have two weeks and a tiny budget to throw the wedding of your dreams. Anybody remember what that was called? All that comes to mind is the episode where they had the cannoli cake and I drooled for hours. Progress is moving, and in the end I can have a comparison Polyvore collage of my inspiration vs. execution. And I know the second one will be even better than the first!

Anyone else having a barbecue wedding? Where are you looking to for inspiration?

I love the wood ring bearer thingie.

As far as saving money, the Wedding Bee DIY section has been a life, I mean, money saver for me. Bees have great ideas!

#1, Welcome!
#2, You got engaged on one of my favorite days of the year! My birthday! So 10million cool points there.
#3, was the show called “For Better or Worse” bc I just read the book based on the show, “Wonderful Weddings for Cost-Conscious Couples,” and although I’m a TLC addict, I totally missed seeing this show.
Happy planning!

I love the idea of a barbecue wedding and wanted one for a very long time before I switched to a Mexican-theme. I live in Southern California so finding vendors, deco items, and inspiration for the theme is easy and cost-effective in my area. I still may do a barbecue for our rehearsal dinner so I can’t want to see how yours goes.

By the way, the website OnceWed has a lot of great ideas DIY rustic vintage themed weddings.

Good luck!

Hi! congrats! I would love to hear about the finished product. I myself am looking for something very similar. We love the outdoors and good barbecue. I have looked into many parks in my area and none of them allow alcoholic beverages. Did you have alcohol? Anyone else have a suggestion? how do I find an inexpensive outdoor site that allows alcoholic beverages?

@ChrisW: We were allowed to serve alcohol at the park, as long as we paid for a police officer to be on-site and make sure nothing illegal was going on (i.e. minors drinking, drinking-and-driving, disorderly conduct, etc.) Maybe if you ask the city if you have an officer present, can you serve beer & wine, but no liquor?
