When I read other brides’ stories about their long and agonised hunts for the perfect venue I feel a little guilty. See, I never had to look for our venue, because I always knew exactly where our wedding would be held.
Allow me to introduce you to Gardens of the World.
(Personal Photo)
In 1989 (the year I was born incidentally) my grandfather decided to clear his land of the apple trees it once had and start creating his dream—a beautiful garden.
I am a baker. I’m not a professional baker by any means, but I love baking. A lot. This explains why I started thinking about our wedding cake about a second after I got engaged, and also why I’ve been treating you all to a whole series of posts on cake. I spent lots of time poring over books and looking on the Internet and here’s a selection of some of the cakes that initially caught my eye. You’ll notice that for extra fun I’ve divided them into categories!
Plain Old Pretty:

My OC girls threw me the most fabulous night out on the town, Sex and the City style. The movie had just opened (I know, I’m a little late posting this), and, ardent fans that we were, we had been planning for months to make a day of it and see it together.
When my bridesmaids (who live in NorCal) realized they needed to host a party there, an 8+ hour drive from the OC, and we quickly realized that what with graduations and schedule conflicts, nobody from down here could make it up there, my OC girls decided to turn SATC day into a celebration of my devotion to one man, since they are awesome like that.
What was meant to be just a last minute, mini-bachelorette turned out to be my largest (with five of us altogether) bachelorette party! (Stay tuned to read about the other bachelorette party!!)
After getting dolled up in our carefully-planned and coordinated SATC-inspired outfits, we hopped in the car (fully intending for our men to pick us up later on):

Okay, and dudes, too!
(Hey, a barn! We had an accidentally rustic wedding!)
We had (what I think was) a really large wedding party. I liked the idea (in theory) of asking just a few people who were especially important to us, but it just so happened that we couldn’t think of any less than enough people to make up a small army. Still, how awesome to have such a troop stand beside you on one of the most meaningful days of your life!

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
Hello! Miss Sewing here. Mr. Sew’s been bugging me about posting his project for a while, and I, being lazy, told him the only way it was going on a blog was if he wrote it. And well, he did. His first-ever-wedding post is below.**
~~~
Hello, this is Mr. Sew. Since the table numbers are making Miss Sewing run about without her head attached, I have decided to write about our cake topper.
As we have mentioned earlier, our cake will have power poles going up the side with a street lamp lighting up the happy couple…. and what could go better with the model train power poles, then some model train streetlights? All I need to do is switch out the wall plug with some batteries and we’re good to go, right?
This is easier said than done, apparently. While they look nice, they were notoriously inefficient… and needed a whole 8-pack of AAs to light up, which looked kind of silly. So I had to do a few things to salvage improve the design.
First I swapped out the old bulb with three LED bulbs which were brighter and took less power.
Everyone loves LEDs.
My love affair with J.Crew began shortly after Mr. Cardigan and I got engaged. The dresses! The jewelry! The shoes!! I visit their website way too often, poring over all of the gorgeous things that I totally can’t afford. I decided almost immediately that I would love for my bridesmaids’ dresses to come from J.Crew (because, seriously, who can resist those amazing dresses?!), but that’s not what this post is about. Oh no. This post is the story of my wedding shoes.
Very early on in the planning process (I’m talking like 2 months into being engaged), I stumbled upon the shoes to end all shoes. It was a normal enough day - I was just browsing J.Crew as usual, looking at the pretty wedding-related stuff when all of a sudden these beauties were staring at me:
Hello, lovely! (Source)
My jaw dropped open. Literally.
Looking for a no-fuss way to drop some pounds before your big day? Why bother with exercise and a healthy diet when, with this fabulous product, you can simply absorb the fat away! Also available in blonde, brunette, prematurely grey, and receding hairline formulas.
OK, that last part was a lie. There are no other formulas. Now you all know our secret for staying so darned sexy.
Don’t worry Redheads, I wont be trying to ingest your product. Although a product that is all natural and also promises to reduce odour (with a “u”) is pretty tempting. And I’m sure Mr. Veggie wouldn’t mind the reduced risk of flare-ups. They’ve been happening more and more frequently as the wedding approaches.
A long time ago, in a wedding blog far away I presented the hive with a problem. How do we dye white Chuck Taylor All-Stars to match our wedding colors? Sure, Converse has a custom Chuck design tool on their website, but the colors weren’t quite right. Our photographer told us about a couple who had done it—so there had to be a way. The original cobbler who did the dye job was denying that it ever happened (really dude?). But I found a sympathetic and curious cobbler and crossed my fingers. Almost 6 months later I am here to tell y’all that it CAN be done!
We started with Chucks in optical white…
… and ended up with Spa, Apple Slice, American Beauty, Clementine, & Oasis!
Now that the wedding is over, I realized that I never fully revealed our beautiful invitations and how I assembled them! Many apologies…
Once I procured my invitation files from Mrs. Gloss, it was time to determine my printing and assembly options!
After driving back and forth to a number of printing locations (Office Max, Staples, Kinko’s, etc.), I decided to use Kinko’s. They offered a variety of colors of cardstock, and their “mesa white” was a perfect color of eggshell with some natural colored flecks in the paper. We had the invites run off, and I paid an extra fee to have the main invitation cut on their laser cutter. I was confident with cutting the RSVP cards myself, though!
I ordered my beautiful envelopes from Cards and Pockets. They had a huge array of different color and size options, and the prices were incredibly reasonable! I also loved that you were able to order samples for $1 a piece (which I did), and you are able to order an exact number of envelopes… thank goodness for not having tons of leftovers! I selected a color called “meadow” for both our invitation and response envelopes. They have a slight metallic sheen to them and are so pretty!
… I stay up and think of the wedding.
Ladies and Gents, the wedding insomnia has hit me. HARD.
I knew that it was coming, since I am quite prone to bouts of sleeplessness. Whenever something exciting and/or terrifying is about to happen to me, I can’t sleep no matter what I try. And it’s not always big events that set me off.
Congratulations to our winners, Mrs. Peep Toe, soontobekatieb and LilacAvenue!
As I started to tell you yesterday, hive, my bridal shower was just spectacular. I feel like I could say what most brides say about their wedding day - “It went by too quickly! I’m not sure if I spoke to everybody! It was just such a whirlwind of people, and food, and fun!” And it couldn’t be more true.
When I was in seventh grade, a girlfriend and I decided we would be cool by answering the phone, no matter who called, by saying, “Hello, this is [name] at The Place To Be!” I don’t know what conversation led to this clever plan, but suffice it to say it didn’t last very long.
Why that random memory? Well, because I’ll be sharing our venue with you in this post, of course! And for that one night in July, to us anyway, it will absolutely be The Place to Be.
If it’s a popular wedding venue in Dallas, not only do we know about it, but we’ve probably called, emailed, or visited. Most of this is complicated by the fact that we started out planning two different types of weddings (oops).
After our outdoor wedding idea melted away, it was back to the drawing board with a few requirements:
The venue-hunting process was more difficult than we would have liked.
I can’t believe that I’m a BEE! When Pengy emailed me, I was in the car driving to Ohio for my sister’s wedding, went straight to her bachelorette party, fell into bed afterwards, and didn’t get the email until the next day. But when I DID get it, I acted a fool, believe me! I screamed at the top of my lungs and my mom and sister didn’t even know what to think! I didn’t have too much time for my bee status to sink in though––Sister Socks’ wedding was the next day and I had some maid of honor duties to handle!
So just coming from my sister’s wedding and with my wedding in four months (my parents are having a VERY busy year), I have so much to talk about!
And just who are the Socks’? We are wine-loving Philly transplants from the Midwest––I’m from Cincinnati, Mr. Socks is from Detroit. I came to Philly for college and Mr. Socks moved to Southern NJ for his job as an engineer. We met via eHarmony during my senior year at Drexel University and we truly are compatible on 27 different levels (thanks eHarmony)! We have two adorable Wire Fox Terriers who keep us on our toes, and a garden that is just never big enough for all that we’d love to grow.
Zoe is on the left, Wrigley is on the right!
