Things Are A-Changing

July 1st, 2010 @ 11:46 am by Mrs. Hot Dog

So, there have been some changes on the wedding front in the Hot Dog household. MAJOR changes.

Remember that food post where I talked about how we were having our favorite restaurant, Texas Roadhouse, cater? Yeahhh… that’s not happening. We decided to revert to our original idea of a potluck-style dinner. Members of the family are each making different dishes. We are still providing the pies, drinks and other desserts ourselves.

You may also recall our rad favor idea

Homemade jam in cute little jars. This idea also got nixed. The reason? My sanity! There is no way I have enough time to learn how to make jam with so little time until the wedding. Not to mention, making enough jam for 150 people is a major feat, even for a seasoned jam-maker (is that the technical term? Jammist?).

I’m still trying to figure out what to replace those darling jars with. I tossed around the idea of lotto tickets a la Miss Jellyfish. Or we could… shoot I have no idea. It’s almost laughable how unprepared I feel about this at the moment.

We toyed with idea of *gasp* not having any favors at all! I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, but most people wouldn’t even notice if there wasn’t a little trinket to lug home at the end of the night. Or would you? I tend to think that I (or any other bride) WOULD notice, but that’s just because we’re so immersed in the wedding culture and this blogosphere that’s it’s ingrained in us. But would a normal person even pay attention?

What do you guys think, hive? Any ideas for fun, simple favors that would complement the feel and look of our wedding? And how do you feel about no favors?

we were going to announce our donation with a pic from of our furbabies but it got down to the wire and it didn’t get done so we didn’t have anything. No one noticed and if they did it was never mentioned!

Honestly I wouldn’t care if there were favours or not. I’m not there to get a trinket. I’m there to celebrate!

But if you’re really stuck what about making fudge? Or brownies? Something you can make in advance and stick in the fridge. I’ve got a really amazing heart-attack inducing sugarific sticky chocolate brownie recipe if you’d like it.

just throw some hershey’s kisses on the tables and call it a day. seriously, those are the “favors” that most people here in MN use. I’ve never been to a wedding where I’ve received an actual gift-like favor. It’s always just candy at the place-setting.

I don’t think anyone will notice or if they do, they won’t care too much. I mean, have you noticed how many favors get left behind at weddings?
I like littlemissmoo’s idea of having brownies, perhaps wrapped in tissue paper in your wedding colors!

We’re not doing favors. Our budget is already breaking. It doesn’t need to be totally demolished. Plus, with our open bar, our guests might be too drunk to notice (or remember) the lack of favors :)

I nixed the favors and I got some pretty positive encouragement about it! I think its a nice gesture but that no one will go crazy if you don’t have them.

I’m with everyone, no one will judge you for no favors.

Do you know anyone else that makes jam that could help you out? I agree this probably isn’t the time to take on the endeavor yourself, but if you knew some jam makers and could get a couple people on board, it probably wouldn’t be so hard. With that said, no one is going to miss favors. Only have them if they are something special you really want to share with people.

We lugged about half of our favors home at the end of the night because most people forgot them.

I say if you’re leaning toward the cut, cut away!

We’re not doing favors, mainly because we throw away all the ones we get (sorry favor-brides, but we just don’t have room for them!)

I concur. Favors are a nice added bonus for guests, but only if they’re truly useful or edible. A dust-collecting trinket probably won’t be treasured by anyone. One wedding I went to gave tiny little treasure chests as favors… cute, but what the heck am I supposed to do with it? Another gave wine stoppers, and I use that thing all the time.

We’re giving seedling pine trees at our Colorado mountain wedding, and we’re wrangling the local boy scout troop to plant any trees that guests choose to leave behind in the national forest.

1. I love the potluck idea, and if it were feasible for my wedding, I would have been all over it. But an outdoor, country vibed wedding? Awesome.

2. Nix the favors and call it a day. Or do something ridiculously easy, some chocolate chip cookies, that can be made by you and maybe some volunteers, and put into plastic bags, frozen, and easy? Otherwise, no one will even notice.

Favors are always nice, but totally not necessary! I would notice if they we’re missing, but I wouldn’t care at all!

I would definitely go with something edible. It’s easy to do, cheap and people will actually take them. I have been to a couple weddings with nice, usable favors, and sooo many people left them behind! What a waste. Edible or none would be my vote if I were you at this point.

you could still use the cute jars if you wanted and just fill them with something less stress-inducing. like hard candies in your wedding colors? Those A&W rootbeer hard candies that are shaped like little barrels would be super cute in glass jam jars with fabric over the lids - and would i think capture the rustic feel your going for. and waaaay less stressful. and bulk candy is usually pretty inexpensive

We’re doing a photobooth instead of traditional favors. Everyone will be able to take home their photo strip! We are toying with the idea of surprise scratch tickets under one chair per table, but who knows!

I also succumbed to the cuteness of jar favors! I wanted to do jam, but knew it would be too expensive to buy that much fresh fruit for the number of guests I was having, so my solution was….apple butter! It fit with my hometown theme and was super cheap and easy. I used this recipe http://www.pickyourown.org/applebutter.htm
and was able to make it in the crock pot from applesauce (bought in bulk). It was my first experiment in canning and I made about 120 jars. It was a fun project and made our house smell amazing (like you just baked about a billion apple pies!). Let me know if you’d like more info, I have pics of the finished favors. Everyone loved them!
