Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

I love cake toppers. I don’t know why, but I just think they’re awesome. I got pretty obsessed with them early on in the planning process, because it’s something that I can buy early! And it can just sit there until it’s time to use it. I love planning ahead.

So, I began the cake topper search pretty early, and I learned very quickly that all cake toppers tend to fall in one of 7 categories. So, I figured step one would be to pick a category, then I could go from there.

What are these categories you ask? Well, let me tell you about them:

1- The classic cake topper:

Cake Toppers – Who Knew There Were So Many Options? : wedding austin cake decor 1220in3

(Source)

It’s cute and simple and…

Blah. I wanted something with personality! And excitement! And fun! This just didn’t say any of that to me.

2- The funny, “anti-wedding” cake topper:

Cake Toppers – Who Knew There Were So Many Options? : wedding austin cake decor Funny Wedding Cake Topper012 funny-wedding-cake-topper01

(Source)

Also under this category is the “ball and chain” cake topper - you know you’ve seen it. I’m just going to go ahead and be really harsh on this one – I hate these. The last thing I want to hint at on my wedding day is that I’ve drug my fiance there or that marrying me makes him unhappy in any way. I really just don’t think these are funny. So, obviously, they were out.

3- The bird cake topper:

(Source - from Etsy seller RedLightStudio)

Drool! I love these little guys – they are so freaking adorable. Just seeing them puts a smile on my face. My only concern with these is that they are such a huge trend right now – would they be overplayed?

4- The animal cake topper:

(Source - from Etsy seller mudcards)

How cute are those mooses? (Moose? Meese? How do you say that?!) I love these cake toppers and I think they’re such a fun way to add a little personality to your cake. The only problem – how the hell do you pick what animal you want to be?!

5- The monogram cake topper:

Cake Toppers – Who Knew There Were So Many Options? : wedding austin cake decor Il 430x02

(Source – from Etsy seller justtoppers)

These are so fun and modern – I like them a lot! I’ve seen them a lot lately and I think they are a great alternative to the more traditional cake toppers.

6 – The wooden people cake topper:

Cake Toppers – Who Knew There Were So Many Options? : wedding austin cake decor Il 430x03

(Source – from Etsy seller goosegrease)

Oh, you adorable little faceless people. These guys make my heart smile. They are just so freaking cute and quirky. Love. Them.

And, just for fun, our last category:

7 – The completely inappropriate cake topper:

(Source)

Oh my – I don’t even know what to say about these people. Let’s save that for after the reception, shall we? Thanks.

So, which category do you think our cake topper came from? You’ll just have to wait to find out!

What’s your favorite cake topper category? And don’t those kissing people just make you uncomfortable?!

My favorite category isn’t mentioned here! My favorite is CHOCOLATE. We topped our cake with a pyramid of chocolate truffles and it looked great! I heart chocolate. And yes, the kissing cake topper is awkward. :)

I love this post! number 7 is ridiculous :) I really like the animals… but how do I know what animal I am… And I like the wooden people… but i really want a face…. GOOD LUCK deciding… I’m going to go ahead and end this run on sentence :)

my friend had that last cake topper you showed. What made it even more inappropriate is that it had fallen over, and most people had seen it on the cake in it’s fallen over state!

We all had a good laugh over that!

LOL, I was originally going to get the classic one but then saw the bird one on etsy and though that was very cute but not “readily accepted” just yet so I am going with the personalized acrylic heart cake topper :)

Ours is not from any of these categories, but is a symbol that matches our theme :)

I went Classic/Retro by using the topper from my parents’ cake 40 years ago. :)

Great Post! My fiance and I really enjoyed this one! :D My favourite would definatly have to be #7 but I don’t think I would be going that far with my cake topper :P I do want something that is humorous though since my wedding is a back yard semi-formal one!

I am so with you on the “funny,” “anti-wedding” topper. I find those so offensive, and generally unfunny. Hate them.

#4! We went with elephants found on etsy because they were so darn cute! I know everyone will ask why the elephants. I am not obsessed with elephants just thought they were really cute!

I’m making a tandem bicycle cake topper out of clay (If anyone has a tandem bike for sale or rent, I NEED IT). Tandems are part of the theme of our wedding.

P.S. I want the bird topper you so SO bad, but there’s not time to get it before my wedding, so I’m going to try to make it and put it somewhere.

Love the MOOSE from Mudcards and it looks like they can custom make whatever you want. There’s some really cute stuff out there!

We did a monogram! Classic, simple & pretty. That was sort of the style of the day

My favorite cake topper is the one that’s a little weird and cute all at the same time. Here’s ours:

We had a small art glass pumpkin. Our wedding was on Halloween with a fall theme.

We got owl cake toppers off of Etsy. I love owls and my FI and I joke about them all the time. They’re cute and will fit appropriately as we’re getting married in the mountains! Have fun selecting!
