Congratulatory Gifts!

July 1st, 2010 @ 1:58 pm by Mrs. Starfish

A cousin of mine just got engaged and a day later I got a text from his sister.

“What’s a good engagement gift?”

I like to make things personal, but there have been some favorite go-tos I like to purchase. So I shared my top 3 go-tos:

Champagne- nothing says celebration like a bottle of bubbly! Mr. Starfish and I don’t actually drink champagne, but we got a ton for engagement gifts. Even though we don’t drink it, we were really excited, because we now have it waiting for when our friends come over to celebrate! We’ll be popping a bottle for a future housewarming party!

Magazine Subscription- When I first got engaged, I had never been in a wedding. Starfish Mom surprised me with subscriptions to a few wedding magazines and I found them super helpful. I think they are great for brides looking for inspiration, especially in the beginning. My favorite is Martha Stewart Weddings.

Project Everlasting” by Matthew Boggs and Jason Miller- I’ve read a few books on marriage and I found this one to be inspiring. A couple of bachelors cross the country and talk to couples who have been married for over 35 years. They call them “marriage masters” and try to find the secrets to everlasting love. With the divorce rates continuously rising, it’s nice to read about people who are still happy after a lifetime together. Being written by bachelors it makes it more humorous and a light read.

Do you have any go-to engagement gifts, or fun additions I should add to my list?

@hrev2010: It really is such a good book, I love all the stories. I’m actually re-reading it for a second time!

is this a regional thing? I didn’t get any gifts when I got engaged and I don’t think I know of anyone else who has either.

I didn’t get any engagement gifts, but I did get a few cards. I bought myself (but will totally hand over to any of my friends who get engaged ) Miss Manners Guide to a Surprisingly Dignified Wedding.

My go to is the Williams Sonoma Bride and Groom cookbook and then a super cute apron from Anthropologie! Great recipes for cooking together and then a super cute apron which is always fun!

I just bought an engagement gift for my cousin…I got the Real Simple Wedding Planning Magazine, which includes a 1 year subscription to Real Simple Magazine, and some cute wedding stickies for the magazines (they say LIKE IT and LOVE IT - I got them from Marshall’s for 50 cent a pack. I stocked up for future engagement gifts!)

a friend gave me a set of letterpress thank you cards and a book of stamps. As a practical gal it was awesome to already have a little stash for engagement gift thank you notes

@amariem25: I got engagement gifts. I give engagement gifts to people I’m close to. It’s not necessary, it’s just fun.

I received several six month subscriptions to bridal magazines.

We also received several bottles of champagne.

I got two engagement gifts that really stood out to me, that I am planning on using when my friends get engaged:

1) A friend of mine got me a really, really nice edition of “Pride and Prejudice” with a card that said “Congratulations on finding your Mr. Darcy”. I LOVED that! (But make sure the friend is a reader, and maybe a better gift to a female)

2) My parents got us a silly, fun gift. His and Hers salt-and-pepper shakers by Jonathan Adler. They have “girly” lips on one and a mustache on the other. Adorable!

I love adorable engagement gifts!
I don’t think they’re required, but I give them because the impulse to buy more wedding magazines is almost always overwhelming.

Also a great go-to choice (especially if it’s accessible to you and in your budget): The Iron Horse Wedding Cuvee sparkling wine. It is (a) so freakin’ delicious (blanc de noir. Yes please.), and (b) topical. Love it.
(the website is here: http://www.ironhorsevineyards.com/wines/sparkling/wedding-cuvee.html, but I’ve definitely seen it cheaper on wine.com and in our local grocery).
