The Boy and His Bling

July 1st, 2010 @ 5:17 pm by Mrs. Frog

I’ve already talked about my bling… now it’s time for Frogger to have his moment. This past weekend, we went to our jeweler (our locally-owned shop that we absolutely love - for those in Phoenix, go see Marc at Burland Jewelry Center) and looked through wedding bands for the boy.

I knew we would have a challenge on our hands when we began driving over. Our conversation:

Me: Soooo, are you excited?

Him: Yeah… but I don’t really know what I’m going to like.

Me: I know but I think you’ll feel differently when you get there and can try some on.

Him: … I don’t know.

Me: What’s the matter?

Him: I don’t really wear any rings and it’s not like I go around looking at guys’ wedding bands. I just don’t know what I’m going to like.

Me: Well, I think you need to just take your time, try on a bunch and don’t settle until you find one that you love.

Him: What if I don’t know what I love… what if I like a few of them? Just make sure that you give me your honest opinion.

Me: Has that ever been an issue of mine? Don’t answer that. I will give you my honest opinion but not until you give yours. I don’t want to decide on the ring for you, I want you to love it and I’m happy to weigh in but ultimately, you need to love this - it’s your ring.

Him: But I want your opinion, I trust your judgment and I don’t really know what I want.

Ugh.

Please tell me someone else had this same discussion? Are those crickets I’m hearing?

Luckily, this story ends happily.

We arrived at the jeweler and began looking through the bands. There are a LOT of men’s bands. Plain or ornate, bling or no bling, multiple metal types, millimeter width, etc. I thought chicks had a lot of options…good grief.

After trying on quite a few, he began to find a style that he seemed to gravitate toward. He wanted simple and classic but not plain. Did we nail it?

And here are our rings together - don’t they just look so happy?

Shout out to Frogger for the photo set-up, good job stud

Did you have a roller coaster ride when you picked out your love’s wedding band?

Great choice! My husband also wasn’t sure what he wanted. So he tried on a bunch….pretty soon, he put one on, and I could see the gigantic smile on his face. That was definitely the one. He said, “Ah, now I get how you must have felt when you picked your engagement ring.” Yup. And we still can’t stop smiling when we look at our rings. Nice choice, Mr. Frog!

I spent a good hour or so a few months ago looking up guy’s rings and showing my Mr. options of different styles. He gravitated towards something similar to what you picture above. Then last weekend I mentioned that we should probably go actually look in a store soon and he was right back to square one “I don’t know what I want! I don’t know what I like!” ….. what happened to all those pictures we looked at, dear!? /facepalm

My fiance was completely confused either–I think he ended up telling the jeweler that he wanted a ring for a guy that doesn’t wear rings. However, once he started trying things on, he found many things he liked. I had to convince him to keep trying them on so he didn’t just settle with the first one that grabbed him! It looks like it’s a fairly similar style to what Mr. Frog picked out.

I love the ring your FI picked!

We had a pretty easy time, but this was when I found out that FI hates his own hands! On our way home from the first time we went to try on bands, he told me that he couldn’t focus on looking at the bands he was trying on because he was so sidetracked by his “ugly” (his word, not mine) hands! To me, they’re normal man-hands. I felt sad for him that he was having a hard time, but I give him props for going back multiple times.

The nice thing was, when he DID try on “the one,” he said he felt really giddy, and he didn’t notice his hands at all. So I guess we know it’s “the one”! =)

Nope -he wears my late father’s, & I wear my late mother’s. The thing is…apparently unbeknownst to me (my father didn’t wear his ring), my dad had some blingy mafia taste & my husband’s ring looks like it could open Castle Grayskull. I did offer him an out, but he said he wanted to wear it, so that was that. He can always flip it around so that the ornate diamond side faces in. The kicker is my mom’s band (which she didn’t wear either) is a tiny little plain band (prob b/c she had an e-ring).

We had the same conversation. I swore there were crickets in the jewelry store. We looked at so many rings that I thougth my eyeballs were going to pop out of my head.

The plus side. We picked Matching band. His is 6mm and mine is 4mm. AND… They are Mr. Frogger’s ring!

nope just picked it out online. he didnt even want a ring. so we picked out the simplest comfort fit band we could find. And it was only $99 including an engraving, although I would have been happy to pay more for it for him!

Eah. Sorta. But in our case it was him pointing and saying “that one. Let’s go”. I thought it was just a snap decision he might regret. Turns out, it was the ring he wanted, he’s just really decisive.

Yeah, he didn’t really care much - I pretty much picked it out for him, haha. I like the one Frogger picked, though! Very classic!

Oh yeah. My hubs swore it was waaaaaay too tight. We went back to the jewelry store after the wedding and the lady looked at it on his finger and looked at him and said, “That’s your correct size. The ring isn’t too tight. You’re just feeling the pressure of being married!” HA. And the ring has fit fine ever since. :)

Haha, your fiance’s ring looks just like my husband’s, and your ring looks like mine. Good choices! :)

Great choice! It looks almost identical to my fiance’s ring. Very classic looking.

Mr. A wasn’t thrilled about a ring until I showed him this pretty neat one that appeals to the science nerd in him!

I like that ring!

I had a ridiculously easy time of it. We’d gotten a flyer in the mail from the store where I got my ring setting and band… promotion of $50 off when you spent $200 as long as it had a diamond plus a voucher for a free set of champagne flutes. So he suggests us going to look. We go in, he looks through them… and finds the one he likes best is simple but not plain and has one small inset diamond. It barely met the criteria of the sale, but it was still the one he liked best! He wasn’t going for cheap, it just happened that way. Then we got $100 worth of free crystal on top of it. :>

The saleswoman was not pleased. She kept pushing toward fancier rings, and when he didn’t cave, then she started asking me if I wanted to “upgrade” my ring (that I’d had for less than a year and which has an heirloom center stone). Yeesh. At least she’s the only bad person we’ve met there. And he loves his ring and can’t wait to wear it.

It was hard picking out a ring, but you did a great job. We wanted matching rings, so it made it even harder. I wanted to get him this ring which looked similar to the one in the top right with the space in the middle. We ended up with brushed metal rings, mine in 18k white gold and his in titanium so he could work in it.

Nice work! That is almost the same style of ring I made my husband. My husband wanted it out of titanium, didn’t want it to be ‘plain,’ and wanted me to make it. I had a lot of fun making it in the machine shop.

Perfect! Mr. L spent a half hour at the jeweler’s…pretty much the longest he spent any wedding decision so far. But he loves (likes?/doesn’t hate) his ring.
