Cake Topper Decisions!

July 2nd, 2010 @ 8:17 am by Mrs. Cardigan

Last time we talked, I shared a little bit about the various categories of cake toppers and my feelings on each of them. I think it’s safe to ruin the suspense and say that I didn’t choose the traditional, the “anti-wedding”, or the completely inappropriate categories. I’m still having nightmares about that last one!

Annnyways, for me, it was really hard to decide between two categories. Which ones, you ask? The animal cake toppers, and the wooden people cake toppers. They were my two favorites because they’re both SO freaking adorable. I was having a really hard time deciding which one I liked better, so I decided to ask Mr. Cardigan. I mean, he is the groom, after all. He should have some sort of say in this stuff, right? :-)

So, I showed him a bunch of different cake toppers, and he completely shocked me with his very opinionated ideas on cake toppers! He fell in love with one of the ones that I showed him and he immediately told me that it was exactly what he wanted. Want to see the one he fell in love with?

Holy crap, that thing is adorable. Mr. C was immediately smitten with it and he loved the idea of animal cake toppers. So, since he had fallen so hard for this one, I figured that we’d stick with the penguins. I mean, they’re adorable and they kind of fit since our wedding is in the middle of winter. Granted, it’s a Texas winter so I don’t know how much that really counts, but it’s still winter, dammit! And since nothing else in our entire wedding thus far has anything to do with winter, I thought it’d be fun to have a little reference to it in our cake.

But, Mr. Cardigan had other ideas. It still cracks me up that he chooses such random things to care so much about - but I’m not complaining… I love how involved he has been so far! Mr. C had specific animals in mind for us to use for our cake topper, and he wanted me to be an elephant.

WAIT! An elephant? How insulting is that, right? Well, actually, it’s really sweet. You see, I have this thing for elephants. I don’t know why, but I think they’re probably the cutest things in the world. My obsession with them started the first time Mr. Cardigan and I ever went to the zoo together - it was for his 17th birthday, and I had surprised him with a trip to the San Antonio Zoo. We had a blast walking around, and when we stumbled on the elephants I made him spend about half an hour watching them with me, I gave them names, and begged him to let me take them home. Unfortunately, that was a no go. Anyways, I have been obsessed with elephants ever since, and they’re my favorite animal. So, it’s only fitting that my animal alter-ego would be an elephant!

One of the elephants that I fell in love with - giving himself a dust bath because it was September in Texas and it was HOT!

(If you’re interested, I believe I named this one Frank.)

As for Mr. Cardigan’s animal? He would be a bear! Funny enough, the story behind this one is from the same day as my elephant story. Mr. C was so excited to be at the zoo and he was in such a giddy mood - plus, he was 17, which makes boys a bit immature. Not that it gets any better when they get older, but I digress.

When Mr. C and I saw on the bears at the zoo, he thought they were so much fun - he was roaring at them and trying to communicate, bear-style (I think he was trying to channel Dori - “weeee neeeeed to fiiiiind his sooooooooooooon!”). I got some super adorable pictures of him communicating with the bear, and they never fail to crack me up:

“Rawr, I’m a bear!”

So, um, yeah. He likes to talk to bears. It’s been an inside joke between us ever since then, so we thought it was only appropriate to have him be a bear! So, it was decided! We’d have an elephant and a bear on our cake topper. We looked through dozens of Etsy sellers before we decided on one person to make our topper, and I quickly shot her an email and asked if she thought she could manage our request.

She said yes! So, for the next 5 weeks I anxiously awaited an email saying it was ready. I don’t have much patience, if you haven’t noticed yet. Finally, about two weeks ago I received an email from her telling me it was ready! I looked at the photos she had sent and I freaked out. It was even cuter than I had pictured it in my head! So, I quickly told her we would take it and then began anxiously waiting for it to come. Do you see a pattern here? Anyways, it finally came last week and OMG, y’all. It’s freaking adorable.

Want to see it?

…Come back later! (I know, I know! I’m mean!)

What would you and your SO’s animal alter-egos be?

I can’t wait to see your topper! Sounds adorable. :) And don’t hate the fact that I have a teeny crush on your Fi. SO cute that he is involved.

Penguins are AWESOME! Especially because they mate for life and the whole “I’m a male penguin and I’m going to give a female penguin a perfect pebble and then be with her for the rest of our penguin lives.”
It is so cute.

I love elephants too!! I think all evidence points to: We are the same person :) (I kid I kid)
I don’t know what our hypothetical animal cake topper would be. I heart elephants a LOT, but Mr. T always calls me a bug. I think he’s a gorilla.

That’s such a cute story and it makes it so personal. I don’t want to wait to see it!

As for us, well, I have no idea what he’d be because he’s so good at everything. Maybe he’d be a circus bear who rides a bicycle while juggling (because the circus bear is good at everything) and I’d be a penguin because their feet have a special vascular system so that they never get cold.

Ooooh! I can’t wait to see the final result! It’s so cute that Mr. C picks these totally random things to get all passionate about. My FI hasn’t done that yet, but I’m sure he’ll stumble on something soon. He’s funny like that. I think our alters would be both monkeys - I call him Monkey, and he calls me Cheeky (as in, cheeky monkey). Yeah, we’re a little weird.

@jgoulart: I don’t blame you - he’s a keeper! :)
@Miss Thimble: Well, the evidence is pretty conclusive! ;-) Oh, and I think a gorilla on a cake topper might be the cutest thing ever.

We used this etsy vendor to get our cake toppers too!

We did the little love birds, and they are now sitting in our kitchen, as a daily reminder of our awesome wedding day!

I heart this seller on etsy too!! and I love the penguin (his first FB pet is a penguin when we started dating), but it will be really odd as our wedding is in the middle of summer 7/10 - next week! So we chose 2 bears as this is the plush he gave me on valentine, and I went the DIY route beacuse I can’t justify buying with my budget. I brought 2 crayola air dry clay with a 60% off at Michaels. It turned out great and it only cost less that $8, sentimental value is great and I am SO keeping it around.

I will see if i can post a pic, but I kind of immitate fliepsiebiep version of bear, I wonder if she will see it and not like me ‘copying’…

Those penguins are too freaking cute! Can’t wait to see what you chose! We are using two dala horses that face each other like they are kissing. This is fitting because my hometown has stong Swedish heritage, I’m half Swedish, and I grew up showing horses. FI loves them too since it’s so original.

@Omg: I’m not sure if you’re very familiar with the Weddingbee community, but here we try to foster a supportive and friendly atmosphere for each other. Comments like these are hurtful and inappropriate…I hope you never find yourself on the other end of comments like the one you just posted.

Cardy, I think your topper ideas are so cute and I can’t wait to see how they turn out! Plus, your zoo pics and stories are too cute! Love you!

Ignoring the rudeness over here…

Miss Cardigan - those cake toppers are awesome! I love the story behind the animals you chose. How cool is that that your guy is involved in picking and choosing cake toppers? :) If we did animal toppers (which we might) we’d probably be a monkey and a duck.

First of all, I’m so happy there’s an Aggie Bee! (wh10p and all of that)

You seem so sweet and down to earth, not to mention drop-dead gorgeous! I really like non-traditional cake toppers. The fiance and I are going the non-traditional, personal route, and I love the personalized-animal idea! Too cute. (And, wow, I’ll lay off the explanation points…)

Congratulations and I look forward to seeing how your cake (cupcake?) topper turns out!

Moving on! :)
