Lite Brite

Turn on the power of shining light! Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I used to be so jealous of my sister when she got a Lite Brite for Christmas; I played with it all the time. If you’re wondering what you’re looking at, here’s a glimpse of them in full light.

(personal photo)

It’s our tin can luminaries! They look so much cuter in person, I just couldn’t wait to stage them well before I snapped a photo. Contrary to popular wedding views, we won’t be having flowers at our wedding. Not only is the additional expense out of our budget, something just doesn’t sit right with me that they die so quickly, and are rarely used after the wedding. I know sending arrangements home is an option, but it seems unlikely that we’d get rid of them all. And worrying about donating them isn’t something I want to focus on the wedding night. I have a feeling other concerns will be a bit more pressing! So we decided on creating luminaries to scatter on the tables.

They look so cute lit up in the dark (minus the creepy ribcage-looking one in the back). We’ve mastered a few different methods of cutting, and experimented with styles. Once the designs are finessed we’ll start production in full (and I’m sure the rate will pick up once we can move this little operation outdoors). Slicing and dicing a couple hundred cans isn’t going to be the best way to spend our afternoons. But after hours and hours of sewing paper together, typing up the guest list, addresses, and all that wedding tedium, this will be a walk in the park!

What other designs should we consider for the tin cans?

Hey..
These are sooo cute….I remember seeing them a few months back and trying to make them….but I totally forgot about them until now. Thanks for the reminder…I soo can’t wait to try them and use them in our wedding…
Just a question though, what did you cut the shapes with? I think I tried a hammer and nail but it didn’t work so well -probably why I forgot about them…hehe
Maybe you could post a DYI tutorial

These are great, I love candle light. Our florist sold us on some tall votives, noting that it would look awesome once it got dim.

neat idea. i don’t know how difficult it is to cut out shapes, but maybe you could do a heart, weddings bells or a flower.

These look really cool! You could use you initials in them if the letters are not too hard to do. I second the DIY.

@MsJudder - So….these were really hard. I made Mr. SD do them all because I was literally not strong enough. We used a dremel tool for the shapes, and our drill press for the dotted ones. It’s super difficult to get things to cooperate enough to make complex shapes. We plan on doing a few more stars and our initials on a really REALLY big can, but otherwise the rest will be random drill-pressed holes!

I think they are awesome! I love the star!

I have seen them done where you just use an ice pick or similarly shaped tool to punch holes. That method suggested that you fill the can with water and freeze it. The ice supports the rest of the can while you hammer/tap the holes.

I saw a wedding where they used these as table numbers. It was very cute!
