Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

No, not that kind. This kind:

Originally I wasn’t sure if I wanted to give out favours. As a bride on a budget I have to be pretty careful about how we spend money. I’ve been to a few weddings where they didn’t give out favours and I didn’t think it took away from the wedding at all. Similarly, I’ve been to weddings where I’ve received favours that I have no use for and aren’t particularly creative or related to the couple in any way and it just seemed like a waste. I knew if I did decide to give out favours they would have to be something special (in my opinion, anyway!).

However, after scouring the Internet for a while I realized pretty quickly that I really wanted to give our guests homemade jam for three reasons.

  1. I think jars of jam are adorable.
  2. My dad does all kinds of canning all the time and I thought jam would be a great homemade and very personal product to give our guests.
  3. If we did the canning in the summer we would be able to use all local produce which really appealed to me.

Anyway, this past weekend the first jammin’ (haha) session took place and like the dedicated and involved bride I am, I didn’t help at all. Nope, I let my dad and 87 year old grandfather do all the work.

Here’s how the first jammin’ session went:

These are the most of supplies all lined up. My dad actually picked all the rhubarb himself at a relative’s farm:

The yummy looking strawberries my grandfather picked in Woodstock, ON:

The aforementioned grandfather:

My dad mid jammin’:

Jam!

and 5 hours later half the jam was done:

As you may have guessed this batch was strawberry rhubarb jam. Since then my dad has also made another 40 jars of rhubarb ginger jam, which is kind of the yummiest thing ever. And yes, my dad is totally awesome for doing this for me.

The thing I have to figure out now is how I want to decorate/label these jars. I’ve been searching the Internet, but I haven’t figured it out yet.

What’s your favourite way to decorate a jam jar?

They have a lot of cute labels to print out at this website; this is just one of the examples: http://www.i-do-it-yourself.com/2010/06/vintage-printable-labels/

I’m still on the jam fence–a friend offered to do the work and we have an apple tree that could produce some apple butter…I just don’t know if it fits with our wedding.

(as for your question…as I don’t do a lot of jar decorating can’t give a real opinion, other than saying I think the pic. above w/ the ‘homemade’ heart sticker and the cloth/ ribbon look adorable!!!)

I don’t think that you have to do much at all. Maybe a label. With food, especially jam, go with simple because people love food.

Any chance you could share your recipes? We’ll be making strawberry jam this weekend, but I don’t have a good recipe for strawberry rhubarb!

This is awesome. I wish we had the skillz (and the fruit!) AND your dad/gramps are soooo cute too!
As far as decor goes, I think a simple raffia/ribbon/bakers twine bow with a little tag would be cute.
Or a simple sticker.
Or a little piece of fabric over the top and a sticker.
Okay.
I’m sure you get the idea….

I thought about this, you don’t neceassarily need labels. You could color code the jams with ribbons, stickers, whatever and then decode them with a sign. Just a thought.

I love jam jars in a more rustic presentation. Like with twine wrapping the top or something. Also, you could probably get cheap customized labels on Etsy, if you want!

Mmmmm, rhubarb! The rhubarb ginger sounds amazing!

Have you looked at your twine options from whisker graphics? I thought my twine purchase would be mostly wasteful, but we used it on a lot of stuff!

My jam favors have personalized labels (with our names and wedding date), and I made fabric “hats” - I cut pretty fabric in circles, secured them with a rubber band, and tied narrow ribbon around them to hide the rubber band. They’re totally cute, if I do say so myself.
