I have mentioned a couple of times (OK maybe more than a couple) about my deep love for vintage teacups and sweet things. Seeing as we won’t be having a traditional cocktail hour at our wedding, we thought we could have a “Tea and Cupcakes Hour” instead, to fill the gap between ceremony and reception.
I think of it as my way of still being able to incorporate my “High Tea” dreams into at least part of our reception.
In my head it will be like this: a selection of my favourite teas (Earl Grey, Darjeeling, Cinnamon, Lavender, etc.), hot water in vintage thermoses (we are slowly collecting these), and trays of teacups on picnic blankets. Mr E doesn’t drink tea, so we will have coffee as well. Specifically, coffee from The Mariposa Coffee Company where he worked one summer. His parents will bring it over when they arrive for the wedding. How does 49er, Yosemite Blend, and French Vanilla Decaf sound? *drool*
Of course, we can’t forget the cupcakes.
If you have been following my “Cupcake Experiment” posts you know by now that I’m a tad obsessed with making and eating cupcakes. Mr E doesn’t complain either. We plan to have at least three types in the end, once we find the perfect recipes for them: chocolate, carrot and one gluten free type (I have many relatives who are gluten intolerant).
Alongside these, how about some fruit? January is gold in Nelson for apricots, all types of berries, cherries, nectarines, etc. And fruit just looks GOOD. A bowl of strawberries, a basket of apricots? There you have decor and good eats all in one without even trying.
I love the scones in that above pic… it’s so tempting to incorporate some of them into out Tea & Cupcake Hour as well. Hmm… we’ll see. There are many different possibilities we could look at, but at the same time we want to keep it simple and do-able.
So now basically our biggest hurdle in making this concept happen is collecting 100 teacups from various thrift stores (a task that my mother is very excited about… almost too excited. She wants teapots too. Whatever makes her happy).
If all else fails, we can always hire teacups from this lovely lady here. She specializes in creating tea parties for events in the Nelson/ Tasman area. We need more people like her in the world.
What other ideas do you have for an alternative to a cocktail hour? Anyone incorporating a kind of tea party vibe into their day?
