Mrs. Locket's Picture
Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).
About Mrs. Locket

In case you don’t already know… our wedding is going to have an elegant-vintagey vibe and I am doing my best to think of creative ways to bring that vision to life.

A while back I came across an oh-so-pretty picture of this lovely purple cameo (see image below)

When I saw it I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be great if they had a candy mold of a cameo to mold some white chocolate into…” I knew if I could find one that I would be in heaven.

With such a mold I could make the prettiest cupcakes, cookies and candies ever! And to my delight in my “Google”y goodness of a search I not only found the molds, but came across someone else who had the same idea. Check these out from Amber:

Aren’t they just lovely?!?! I drooled when I saw them and I am even more happy that I found the mold online for the cameos. It’s funny how I sometimes think I am being creative, but then I learn that someone has already beat me to the punch. Either way, I am excited to recreate my own version of these gorgeous baked goods. So excited that I was inspired to paint some cookie dough canvas with some royal icing “paint” myself.

I got to work using some left over sugar cookie dough I had prepared and frozen in a prior weekend. I preheated the oven, rolled my dough, got to baking and prepped up some quick royal icing. To keep things simple I stuck to plain white icing with a purple base coat. To color my icing I added a mix of my Wilton Icing Colors: Burgundy, Violet, Brown, and Black until I achieved the color I desired.

And, in case you are interested click on over for the Royal Icing Recipe or the Sugar Cookie Dough Recipe that I used. The only differences I made was to add 1 tsp. almond and vanilla extract to the icing and to the cookie dough. I also added 4 oz of fat-free cream cheese in place of part of the butter in the cookie dough recipe because I love to make them extra soft.

A few laborious hours later and the results were decent:

What I learned:

  • I needed to use a size 2 piping tip, the size 1 was just too small.
  • I learned to play with the consistency of the icing for piping and flooding.
  • The icing for the lace detail needed to be right in between the flooding and piping consistency.
  • Paint brushes worked better at pulling the icing from the piped outline than a toothpick.
  • This project would have been easier over 2 days, the base coat needs time to dry (3hrs worked, or overnight)
  • Do not over bake the cookies, they harden up more once they cool.
  • Keep piping tips wet or they will clog up.
  • Watch out, the darker the icing, the more color on your tongue.
  • Do not leave cookies unattended or the devil (aka Molly) will come and take them away (and stain your carpet w/ purple icing)!

Another inspiration for my dessert buffet comes from Bakerella and I am pretty sure you’ve all heard of them. Cupcake Bites! MMMMMMMMMMMM!

I am so very excited about these little bites of goodness! They are absolutely adorable and utterly delectable and I am sure I can conjure up a way to give them an old-school make-over.

Tell me hive… do you drool over these pretty desserts just as much as me? Are you planning on baking goodies for your guests?

Your attempt was perfection. So beautiful! Maybe you can pipe a lace pattern over the cupcake bites? Can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve next!

@sulaii211: great idea..I hadn’t thought of that yet!
@bklynldy: I made those sample ones months ago and they are long gone in people’s tummies…I plan on taking the week off before the wedding to bake my hear out and will make them all then. I may get ahead of myself though and try to make them earlier and freeze them because I have heard of people doing this.
