About Mrs. Turtle

A Whole New Life

July 6th, 2010 @ 2:39 pm by Mrs. Turtle

For me, the most overwhelming part of this whole engagement has not been crafting the guest list, hiring the vendors, or designing the details. It has been the realization that this wedding day signifies a whole new life for me… literally.

I just finished reading the biography of Marie Antoinette and strangely, I found myself identifying with her early life. I recognize that’s a bit of an exaggeration… I’m not a fourteen-year-old Austrian princess, nor am I marrying the Dauphin of France, and I’m definitely not moving to Versailles. (I wish!) But like the young Dauphine, my new marriage will bring a lot of change with it.

To begin with, at the beginning of this summer, both Mr. Turtle and I graduated from college…

After the wedding, we’re going to Europe for our honeymoon, and when we return, we are driving clear across the country, from our hometown in California to our new home in Maryland! Mr. Turtle will be attending grad school there, while I begin the hunt for my first post-college job! It will be my first time living in a different state than my family and friends. This also means that I recently quit the job I had for the past three years.

Me and Mr. Turtle celebrate signing the lease for our new place in Maryland

Although I have to admit that I feel nervous about beginning this whole new chapter, I am also super excited to begin married life with such adventures! (And isn’t getting married enough of an adventure in itself?) When life is filled with so many changes, it’s easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of it all and not process the reality of what is going on. We’ve been trying to take time, in the midst of everything, to pause and enjoy life, to be thankful for what we have already, and also for new opportunities.

I’m thinking that what we’re going through right now is probably pretty common for younger brides like myself. Although getting married later in life has its own set of challenges for sure, I feel like all of this wouldn’t feel so overwhelming if Mr. Turtle and I were homeowners and established in our careers.

Are any of you going through something similar? Do you have a big move coming up, or another type of change, that has added to the stress of planning your wedding?

We’re moving to Maryland after our wedding, too! Granted it’s only 15 miles away, but still, a move is a move. :-P Good luck to you!

So exciting! As another “many changes” bride, I can tell you that it can definitely be overwhelming, but ah, life is good after the storm! Personally, I’m looking forward to the Turtles taking the East Coast! Good luck and congrats on all your exciting changes - try to focus on each one as it comes!

Cool! My family used to live in CA and we moved to MD when I was 11. May I ask what part you are moving to? I grew up right outside of DC. Congratulations to you and Mr. Turtle!! MD is definitely NOT CA but I think you will grow to love it here! There is plenty to do and summer is the perfect time to move here because the weather is actually nice! You will now experience seasons!! You must be so excited! :-)

I definitely know where you’re coming from. I will graduate from college, start my career, get married, and move out of the home I’ve lived in all my life, all within one year. It’s going to be an interesting ride! You should enjoy MD living, the east coast is great. :)

Hi Miss Turtle! Yup, I’ll be dealing with big changes too. I’m moving to a new city and state post-wedding, and unlike my previous temporary-but-possibly-permanent moves for school, this is a pretty permanent one. And I’ll be living with my husband for the first time, and leaving my friends and family behind, and having to find a new job and new friends and adjust to a new city. I find change to be exciting but something like this can feel a bit daunting.

Congrats on getting your first home in Maryland! How exciting!! We have a few months between the wedding and our moving date. It didn’t add to our wedding stress, but I do feel like the stress level hasn’t gone down since the wedding like it should!

Yup, I’m moving to Switzerland! Isn’t it an exciting (but also very stressful thing!?) to be a bride to be AND moving someplace new??

Welcome to Maryland! Yaaaaaaaay!

We just moved, and decided to stay here in Baltimore for at least another year, so no major changes coming up.

I’m in the same boat too! We will be moving either right before or after the wedding. I graduate from law school 4 months before the wedding, and take the bar 6 weeks before! Than we will be moving to a new city to start a new job. It’s intense, but I think we just have to enjoy the ride!

Unfortunately, it takes a lot longer these days to accomplish some of those “grown-up” things like homeownership and being established in a career. Although I’m proud of where I am and what I’m doing, I certainly thought I’d be further toward those types of goals when I got married, especially at age 27. I think at any age, marriage brings a lot of change.

How exciting! We don’t have a huge move planned right after the wedding, but I will be starting my search for my first “grown up” job, and we already have a move planned for about 6 months or so after the wedding!

first off congrats on everything!
We have already bought our house and were “legally” married last April…so the marriage and house aren’t anything new…BUT does getting a HUGE raise at work count? The raise is enough that we will be able to pay off our $10k debt in about 14 months! (don’t worry none of that was wedding debt!)
But when you’ve llived paycheck to paycheck for SO long…it’s nice to have a little leeway now. THAT for me is a HUGE change!

Wow, that is what I am facing! Have had a good job for 4 years and when the BF and I get married later this year we will be moving 350 miles away for him to start his career, first time away from my family and friends and no job lined up for me up there (saving big time for that, right now). Nervous but excited too, kind of comforting know that others face this too and that it is ok to be nervous even though you are super excited to be with your love. :)

Congrats on your upcoming wedding and keep us posted on how your move goes.

Perfect picture of Marie Antoinette (K Dunst) she looks bewildered! Good luck with your new and exciting life! I went through that transition about two years ago. After graduation I worked/travelled abroad for awhile. After returning home I hooked up with an old fling and next thing I knew we bought a house and I had a real job.

I found the transition to be really difficult and had a hard time for awhile. But things got better and I’m now super excited to be engaged and moving on with domesticated life! Good luck to you!

I hear ya, sister! Life got super crazy after our wedding and hasn’t slowed down yet. Interestingly, I *also* moved to MD immediately after our wedding! If you don’t mind me asking, what part of the state are you moving to? I live in Bethesda and there are a ton of Bees in the MD/DC area. I smell a meet-up!!
