Table Identification, Take 2

July 6th, 2010 @ 4:02 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Last time, we made some cute computer-game styled table “numbers”. But I was afraid they were a bit too confusing, and more than a bit pixelated.

So then I thought, hey, let’s just use actual numbers. But not just any numbers. Useful numbers!

Okay, so maybe they aren’t all that useful. They are different constants, conversions, and other common numbers used in science and engineering. And don’t give me that look, I told you they’d be nerdy.

First, Mr. Sew and I came up with a list of different numbers we’d used in the past. Then he wrote up a little description of what each number was, and I followed it up with a little snippet about the two of us. I printed them out on card stock and cut them into circles.

Next, I took some red card stock and wrapped it in black ribbon, using double stick tape to secure it to the card.

Then I mounted the circular number to the card, wastefully using more double stick tape.

Although they are obviously not as cute as the game-cards, Mr. Sew really likes these. I’m hoping they’ll be a little less confusing for our guests, since it’s still a *number*. We’ll stick these on the table number stands provided by our venue, and hope for the best!

What’s your favorite math/science number?

If I were seated at the Pi table I would be hoping to get to eat some pie!

These are really cool and wonderfully nerdy. However, I love the gamer ones too.

very cute idea! I don’t mean to be snarky, but does the last pic have a typo? “wouldn’t tell the tell anyone”? hope that one was just a guinea pig!

Just wanted to make you aware of the fact that there’s a typo in the one in the last picture!

Cute though, I love nerdy numbers!

You also don’t need all those comma splices on the last one.

My favorite number is probably the ideal gas constant. 0.08206 when using Liters, atmospheres, moles, and degrees Kelvin. I was a little sad that I only figured out 5 of the 12.

Unfortunately these wouldn’t have gone over too well with my hubby. I’m the geeky one and his family had to sit at Table 7 due to another infamous wedding.

Most.Amazing.Thing.Ever!!!!! I was a little sad to see c (haha pun not intended!) rounded up from 2.998e8, but other than that, SOOO awesome!! I absolutely love the idea, and may possibly steal it. Can’t wait to see what else you come up with!! =)

We ended up having a lower percentage of math/science folks than anticipated, so our similar idea went bye-bye as the RSVPs came in.

But so others may use it: we had straight-up table numbers, 1 through 12, but the escort cards were to have equations commensurate with the nerdiness level of the guest. So like, mom gets seated at table 1, but dad gets seated at table cosine of 0.

And since you asked, our household is partial to Euler’s constant.

Love it! We’re engineers, too, but the only thing we’re doing with our table numbers is starting with 0 instead of 1. I wanted to go binary, but FI thought it would confuse people. *sigh*

My fiancé is getting his PhD in computer science and he’s constantly explainin the significance of one number or another to me. I actually e-mailed him this post because I think it’ll make him smile. Thanks!
