Hair-spiration

July 7th, 2010 @ 1:51 pm by Mrs. Socks

I don’t want to wear my hair up for our wedding. I never wear my hair up. Well, I shouldn’t say never. I rarely wear my hair up. So, I’m not going to change that just for the wedding. Instead, I’m going to wear it down, and probably a bit curly! This is my hair right about now:

This was taken right before Sister Socks’ rehearsal dinner a few weeks ago. My hair is getting pretty long, and I blow it straight every day.

Naturally? My hair looks more like this:

Don’t mind the bunny ears, the mullet, or the bad 80′s party that I got drunk at… I’m talking about my hair here. Under the horrible fake mullet.

Yeah, it’s wavy. And this is the ONLY picture of myself that I have of it wavy (I was going for the ’80s grunge “I wear my sunglasses at night” look I guess. I don’t know, this was a few years ago).

I don’t like it wavy because it’s hard to get it to look GOOD and I just have a fear of it looking crunchy or over-producted. (Producted isn’t a word? It should be, spell check!) So for the wedding, I’ll have to go with very controlled curls-hairstylist created curls.

Here are my hair-spiration photos!

I love Tina! She’s rocking some great waves here… unlike my mullet waves.

Zooey Deschanel makes me so happy. She just looks so beautiful all of the time!

I want to have a full hairstyle that frames my face, and then have a cute little headband popping out on my head—I live for headbands right now!

When my sister’s wedding came around, I thought I’d take the opportunity to do a semi-trial to see how it turned out:

Here I am with my little cousin who was a wonderful flower girl-and Sister Socks is in the background with her beautiful veil!

Anyway, back to my hair… it fell out. Like… within 30 minutes. I don’t think the hair stylist had the iron hot enough when she did the curls or something, because usually my hair can hold curl at least a LITTLE better than that.

I redid it before the ceremony, but still… I definitely have to do another run through or two before the big day!

Did you do a hair trial? How did it turn out?

Those are great inspiration pics - I hope they find a way to have the style stay with you for more than half an hour!

I have weird wavy hair and to get it to curl really pretty on it’s own here are a few tricks: do NOT brush it when you get out of the shower, just scruch it with your towel, then apply some mousse while scrunching it gently upside down. The real trick is to use a diffuser when you blowdry it. Take your time, set it on low or medium speed, and cradle parts of your hair in the diffuser while you move it across your hair. Don’t diffuse it all with your hair upside down or else your hair will be HUGE, but definately do it upside down a little to get some good volume and separation. If you scrunch it while you go, it won’t end up crunchy and I finish is with a cream pomade to defrizz and soften the look.

I second mcnetn3. Also, I use CurlsUp (blue bottle, runs about $11 in drugstores) to keep my curls in line- it is made of magic and unicorn sparkles, I think. Two pumps gets my mop under control, but I suspect that just one (applied when wet) would do it for someone with a normal person amount of hair.

Another awesome thing to have in your bag of tricks- Frieda’s smoothing cream. It runs about $5, and is fantastic- really helps to control the frizz on dry hair, and it is one of the few curl/frizz products I’ve used that won’t make my hair crunchy, oily, or flat.

Good luck!

My hair doesn’t hold curl AT ALL and my stylist taught me a little trick to help.

She said hair only styles when it’s dry and hot. A curling iron makes your hair hot enough to style, but when you release and drop the curl your hair is still hot, and continues to style until it’s cool. When she curls my hair she releases, and holds the curl until it’s cool, then lets it fall. Curls stay in my hair all day this way!

I love your inspiration pictures!

That’s going to look great! And I totally feel you on the whole wavy hair thing. My hair is naturally wavy, but it kind of looks ridiculous if I don’t spend hours curling it. I’d much rather spend 15 minutes straightening it and be done with it!

I will bet once a good stylist gets ahold of your hair they can style the curls with staying power.

@Mrs. Dachshund: thanks for the tip! My hair never holds curl, so I will try this!

It looked cute! Shame it fell out…did she spray each section w/ hairspray before she curled it? How clean was your hair? Sometimes (esp. with silky looking hair like yours) it curls better when it’s a little dirty. So next time try doing it on day old hair!

Um, I LOVE Tina Fey. Zooey Deschanel. My hair is totally weird. It used to be curly, and I could easily style it with pretty much any curl cream or gel on the market. Suddenly, about a year ago, that all stopped. After trying pretty much every curl product on the market, I gave up and started straightening it. But a few months ago, a friend of mine recommended Ouidad (you can find them on the web). I bought a bottle of the all-weather curl serum (or something…I don’t remember exactly what it’s called). It’s expensive, but SO worth it. My curls look normal, finally! But for our wedding, I’m going to have my stylist do more “structured curls,” a lot like your picture of Zooey Deschanel. I agree with what Swiss Miss to Bee said…try it on day-old hair. And spray the crap out of it. (c:

@Swiss Miss to Bee: I didn’t wash my hair that morning, so it was on day-old hair! I was super nervous about my hair looking greasy, but it wasn’t too bad. And I thought we were going to destroy the environment with the amount of hairspray I had in my hair!

I think if I go with a better stylist, it’ll turn out better, but we’ll see!

@Miss Socks: Oh man! Hmm, what about getting some highlights? Nothing like damaging your hair to dry it out and make it hold a curl, lol. (I should know.)

I’m kidding. Unless you really wanna get some highlights!

@Swiss Miss to Bee: haha I tried highlights years ago, but it was too expensive to keep up! lol, but I’ll consider damaging my hair a bit if it helps it look fantastic and curly on my wedding day!

This is going to sound really weird… But I have the same problem with my hair holding a curl and the only thing that works… curling my hair when it is CLEAN! No one has ever recomended this and one day I wanted to curl my hair but I had just washed it and BAM! Curly hair all day long! It was amazing. I just put a little bit of product throughout it all and then curled, doused with hair spray and it worked. Try it at home and see how you do. It may work for you too :)

my hair is a lot like yours when I let it dry naurually. I find that it holds a curl a bit better when it is “dirty” aka not washed for a day or two. Maybe that will help!

I thought I wanted my hair up in a low bun or something with a flower until I bought my dress, and realized that it looks much better with my hair down. So now I’ve got to find styles for hair down that I like! The ones you posted are awesome.. I’ll definitely be saving them to my inspiration folder. Now to find a stylist who can make my hair hold some curl…
(PS- Thanks to Doxie for the tip! I’ll mention it to my stylist..)
