An Unexpected Quote

July 7th, 2010 @ 5:20 pm by Mrs. Pashmina

Have you ever been super, duper surprised by a wedding quote? Well, now I have!

I normally know what price to expect. Of course there will be extras, yet I roughly know the price. But those linens just surprised me! Equipped with my calculator, knowing how much per tablecloth cost, I thought I had it in the bag… pretty much. Of course there were going to be shipping costs, tax, perhaps those extras that make “linens”. But when I received the quote my jaw literally dropped. It was the first time.

It was like way more than paid for my dress! More than my flower budget. I could invite and feed like 10 more people! That, well, is a lot for something guests will rest their elbows on and spill coffee on!

I was told the tablecloths in Matte Satin are between $25-$29 (and I did the math… this equals $435 for 15 tables). A few things concerned me when I flipped to the second page which itemized my bill. Why do they list 30 tables when I stated that there were 15? Do they use 2 tablecloths per table? And why does it list the price per unit as $37? I thought it was from $25-$29. What happened to that? Which is the typo?

So I have just emailed the linen representative asking if she could break down the price. We will see what she says…

Have you ever received a quote, far in to the discussion, that surprised you?

Yes, linens were *definitely* pricier than I ever would have guessed!

Whoaaa …. I bought all of my linens through ebay, weddingbee posts or tableclothsfactory.com - efavormart is a good place too! I saved a BUNCH of cash and will resell once the wedding is over - check it out!

Whoa, that’s a step up in price! I was surprised how much limos cost, especially since most companies want to charge you for the hours and hours they’re just sitting in the parking lot!

Oh yeah. We got catering staffing quotes for our NYE wedding that were double the normal rates. The servers were normally paid $30-$40/hour and so they wanted $60-80 for servers and bartenders. For a buffet dinner. I sent a quick ‘no’ back on that one!

I was suprised how much venues cost. Once place was $13,000 just to rent, and it wasn’t anything special at all, just a regular hall.

Yeah, if I had not been absolutely against having to iron and set up all the tablecloths myself, I would have bought them to save the money for sure.

After the first set of WTF?! reactions to certain things, I actually didn’t get sticker shock anymore. I think it took a frame of reference, as well as trying to stay on top of a feasible budget!

Woah, that’s definitely a jump in price! My big shocker was cake - who knew it was so expensive?!

Ugh, linens and fabric in general are the bane of my existence right now. I cannot believe how expensive they are.

Hair! I got a quote for $300 just to do my hair alone. Yikes.

I had sticker shock when it came to our equipment rentals! MAJOR sticker shock! It was early in the planning and I basically thought we couldn’t pull it off… but then I got some more quotes, having a better idea of what was up, and it turned out ok :)

Later I had sticker shock over cake! It wasn’t a huge amount of money like the equipment, but I didn’t expect all the fees that drove up the cost about 25% (stacking fee, delivery fee, etc etc)

The worst part about wedding planning is the price mystery — so few vendors put up price lists!

Our venue coordinator has changed the price on everything multiple times. She refuses to give us anything in writing, doesn’t give us the information we request, and isn’t nice at all. We’re completely lost at what to do and our wedding is in 5 weeks.

my chair covers are $9 per chair and i need 90 chairs. i asked if i could buy/rent my own covers and use them she went on about how the company they use came out and measured each chair specifically and the covers i choose may not fit properly, so i gave in and we are using the venue’s covers.

Holy crap that is ridiculous for tablecloths! I had two shockers that finagled their way into the itemized bill after we’d already asked them. One was a cake cutting fee at $3/guest (that’s $3×220=$660! Waaay more than we are even paying for a cake - though I realize we are getting a good price on our cake because of who’s doing it). This bugged me mainly because the venue didn’t even MAKE wedding cakes! And even if I, as the bride, cut every 220 slices of cake they would still charge us! The second was a $20 corking fee to open up bottles of champagne (which I also said I’d do myself, but they would still charge us).

Needless to say we have a new venue that is AWESOME!

Whoa… hopefully you get that figured out! We managed to find a really, really inexpensive place. We paid $11.80 each for 16 round black imperial stripe tablecloths and 0.48 each for 110 black napkins. With the shipping added in (to and from) our entire total ended up being $277. Way less than I imagined. They ship all over the country if you’re interested in that.

@Miss Pashmina, quite often linen suppliers and venues who provide linens DO use 2 per table. in my experience, they are placed on an angle on the tabletop (underlay) and the extra linen is placed on top (overlay) of maxiumum coverage and texture. many companies will do this regardless of whether your overlay is an accent colour, or just plain white. it’s another way for companies to soak you for your $$
