About Mrs. Starfish

According to the New York Daily News, the USPS plans to raise postage rates for regular mail to 46 cents (an increase of 2 cents) and make increases for other mail as well. Postcards, which many brides use for Save the Dates will increase to 30 cents per card, also a 2 cent increase. It may not sound like a lot, but when planning a wedding, every penny adds up.

Postage Increase = Thank You Motivation : wedding newport postage Dress

Source

I’ve spent more on postage this year alone than I probably have in my entire life. There was postage for thank you cards for engagement gifts, postage for save the dates, postage for shower thank yous, postage for wedding invitations, postage for brunch invitations and then the postage for wedding gift thank yous. That is a lot of postage, especially when your event is for 200 + people.

The increase is supposed to take place in January 2011, almost three months after the wedding, perfect timing to give me a little motivation. I’ve heard different ideas of how long you have to send thank yous—some people say up to a year, others say three months, and I’m sure there are lots of other thoughts. I’m striving to get them done by the three month mark, which was the plan before the increase, but it’s an added bonus if I get them done in time now.

Will any other brides use the increase as thank you motivation? How many months after the event do you think are appropriate to send out thank you cards for the wedding?

I’m using the increase as a deadline to get my invites out for my late-feb wedding! the RSVP deadline will be too late to save me on the RSVP postcards, but at least I’ll save a little on the invites.

OMG I totally had the same thought. That will be six months, and with my goal of getting my thank yous out by the end of August, it’s a perfect deadline.

@ktisthatbees: Me too, they don’t really go with our invites, but they are pretty so I’m using them anyways!
@CorgiTales: That’s a great point to have the rsvp cards postage increased if your sending out invites, I don’t know if I would have thought of that! :)

Ironic how when I was getting our Thank you note postage last week and asked if there would be an increase soon the postal worker looked at me like I was crazy. Luckily I hope to get them out in 1-2 months. I sent my shower ones out in a week, although we’re having our wedding ones made with a photo from our photographers so it might take a little longer!

I know that I want mine out quickly because I waited 8 months for one from my cousin and it upset me a little. I spent hours hand painting pottery for her and she took 8 months to send me a not personalized “thank you.” Maybe the Post Office will help me do this.

P.S. I used those stamps and then I had to add a 17 cent stamp. They gave me a wolf. Boo! I didn’t care about stamps until then.

Not to dissuade your motivation to get your thank you notes out, because I’ll be working in the same time frame, but if you buy the Forever stamps for $0.44 each, you can still use them even after the increase. Less stress!

Ummm, yeah, that’s definitely motivation. Looks like our friends and families will be getting thank you notes instead of Christmas cards this year! Thanks for the heads up!

I know it’s not as romantic, but you can always buy the “forever” stamps that are still good after the hike in price no matter when you bought them. I think it would work fine for thank you’s….

I’m right there with ya’ girl! Thank you note motivation! lol. We’re not taking our real honeymoon until December when we both get free-time off work, so we can do the thank yous when we return from our mini-moon right after the wedding.

Good to know! It looks like I’m in the same boat as CorgiTales. I’m planning on sending out the invites the week after Christmas for my March wedding. But I’ll need to make sure the RSVP cards will have enough postage. I’m just glad I’ll still get to use the lighthouse stamps for the invites.

https://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10052&productId=10001912&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10000003&top_category=10000003&categoryId=10000068&top=&currentPage=0&sort=&viewAll=Y&rn=CategoriesDisplay&WT.ac=10001912

I knew I couldn’t afford custom postage, but I was so happy when I saw these because my fiance proposed at the top of a historic lighthouse!

@TheFutureMcBride: I just weighed ours with the post office yesterday and they said we are good with the 42 cent stamps, but I’m still a little worried about this!

@octbride: That is less stressful, but I’m using pretty stamos for motivation lol

@FutureSteelFox: I love the lighthouses, we used those for our save the dates and rsvp envelopes! When I bought our stamps yesterday they told me these were all sold out and said online too, but obviously not!

Our RSVP date was a week before a postage hike, and we used that as a not-so-subtle reminder/hint. Heh.

Ugh what a pain! Good thing all we have left of our wedding stamps is the forever stamps we used on TY notes. I got all mine out by 2 months after the wedding. Any longer than 3 months after the wedding and I do think the gift recipient is a little rude/scatterbrained.
