Reflections of a Bridesmaid

July 7th, 2010 @ 5:43 pm by Mrs. Seashell

I have a friend who was recently adding up the number of times she’s been a bridesmaid. The tally: 14. FOURTEEN! I literally don’t understand how this is even possible. She claims that it’s partially because she went to a Christian college and a lot of her friends married young (including her) and had huge wedding parties. The other part, not to be underestimated, is that she is a fabulous friend. But still - 14?! She said she’s one part honored, and one part broke from buying all those dresses. Poor thing.

I’ve been a bridesmaid three times. Each time I was totally spoiled with laid back brides who treated me nothing like a “maid”. (Side note: If anyone has come up with a more user friendly term I’d love to hear it. I keep calling them “my girls” because the implication of “bride’s maid” gets me every time. For example, I say “my girls are each in different dresses in different shades of aubergine”, or “my girls are spread all over the country - it’s crazy!”)

As a bride to be, I’ve been thinking about my experiences at the altar to date. There is no exact set of rules for being a bridesmaid, but I did find these tips helpful. Here are some brief recaps:

Bridesmaid Carrie’s Wedding:

Reflections of a Bridesmaid : wedding bridesmaid dress pictures providence 116 1

Carrie was arguably the most laid-back bride in history. I am not exaggerating. She actually asked me to choose a dress, in any color and style, and let her know what it looked like. Then, she told her best man to coordinate his tie and the florist to match the flowers. “Oh, and then I guess we’ll make sure the invitations match too,” she said. Ultimately, she let me choose her wedding colors. I don’t think it gets more easy going.

She did ask me to put together bathroom baskets. I also did her makeup as well as her mother’s, my own, and Mama Seashells that day!

Carrie also rocked rustic simplicity before it exploded on the blogosphere.

Bridesmaid Ashley’s Wedding:

Ashley got married immediately after completing medical school. The task of wrapping up med school and planning a wedding boggles my mind, but she managed to pull it off. One afternoon she sent me a message over gchat saying that she found dresses at J.Crew on sale and she wanted to order them for all of her bridesmaids. I sent her my size, and a few days later my dress arrived on my doorstep. Easy peasy.

Bridesmaid Allie and I also got to partake in wedding dress shopping with Bridesmaid Ashley. It made for some wonderful girly fun, and it was special to be there on the day that Ashley purchased The Dress. Oh, and there may or may not have been a hilariously fun bachelorette party in Chicago, but I have to give Bridesmaid Allie most of the credit for that one.

Patty’s Wedding:

Reflections of a Bridesmaid : wedding bridesmaid dress pictures providence 38 3

Patty was my childhood babysitter who found love at 40. I was honored to be her bridesmaid. MOH Julia was a bridesmaid as well, so she’s had practice walking down the aisle! My main requirement for Patty’s wedding was to find a navy dress. One afternoon I was wandering Ann Taylor on Michigan Avenue and happened upon two navy dresses - on in my size and one in Julia’s - on sale! I immediately called Patty, and it was a done deal.

I did wrap Jordan almond favors with Mama Seashell and Patty one afternoon after begging for a wedding-related task. I also did Patty’s make up for her wedding as well as my own and Sister Seashell’s.

I have repeatedly loved being a bridesmaid. It has been so special to be a part of the weddings of women that mean so much to me. Being a bridesmaid honors a relationship, and affords you a unique opportunity to literally stand by a loved one on one of the most important days of their lives.

How many times have you been a bridesmaid? What were your responsibilities?

Wow, 14 times as a bridesmaid (I don’t like that term much either!)! I’ve never been one (I have too many guy friends I guess), but I’ll keep this in mind if I’m ever a BM!

10. I’ve been a bridesmaid 10 times! And I have the credit card debt to prove it! I’ve had everything from bride’s like your friend Carrie, to complete and utter control freak Bridezillas…but I have also had a LOT of fun, and treasured being a part of my friends special day. Be good to your bridesmaids…its not as easy as people think!

I’ve only been a bridesmaid twice, I was a flower girl like 6 though! A girl I know has literally been a bridesmaid 20 times!!!! I can’t imagine!

i haven’t been one either! I was a flower girl once (maybe twice?) and a junior bridesmaid once I guess…. but I don’t think those really count. I’m pretty sure that each of my MOH and 2 BM have been BMs once before. Their only “responsibility” is to be generally pleasant and buy a dress (i’m picking with their input). They’ve all offered to help with additional stuff though… bc they are awesome.

I’ve never been a bridesmaid–but I have been the officiant! I only have two married friends–the first had a tiny courthouse ceremony with only immediate family and the second, I got to be the minister for. I got ordained online and performed the ceremony. I’m in all the wedding pictures and got my hair done and got dressed with the rest of the wedding party as if I were a bridesmaid but I was actually the officiant. The bride for that wedding didn’t dictate the dress, but tried to coordinate the 3 bridesmaids’ purple dresses and I wore grey, that she helped me pick out. I think I’m having 3 MOH’s and no bridesmaids. One Maid of Honor, one Matron of Honor and one Man of Honor.

I’m a theta too!! But as far as weddings go I was a MOH in April and I literally did nothing, anytime I offered to help she had nothing for me to do. In October I will be a BM and so far haven’t done anything for that wedding either she even brought the dress to me to try on and be measured! I think I am a little spoiled as far as being in weddings go! I hope my girls will think its easy as well!

Is it bad that I have never been a bridesmaid? Not really, when my parents got remarried (to different people) I was in their weddings but I don’t think that counts. I am only going to have my sister as a maid of honor. None of my girlfriends have been very excited about their bridesmaid experiences so I didn’t want to put them through it.

I am calling my attendants “bride’s babes” because they are too dear of friends to be called “maids”.

I have been a bridesmaid 8 times–twice I was the maid of honor (sister, good college friend).

I’ve only done it once, technically. I was the officiant at one of my gals’ (I do it, too :)) wedding, but we did all the bridesmaidy kind of stuff with her. 1-2, then?

Since I haven’t done it a lot, I actually had a lovely time in that role. Brides were great and both are still dear friends. A single friend has done it five times and is totally bummed about that fact, though.

I’ve never been a bridesmaid, mostly because none of my friends are married. As for name calling, I call them my ladies or my girls. I am not a fan of the “maid” terminology either.

I was MOH to my sister and that was it. We had zero bridesmaid duties since my sister lived in Vancouver and the wedding was in Montreal. Oh, but I did bake her 75 cupcakes for the reception so I guess that counts!

I have been a bridesmaid 3 times, coming up on 4 soon. The first time I was young (13), so I had no responsibilities. The second time, I didn’t even meet the bride until her shower - I had been friends with the groom. So again, no responsibilities. The third time was for one of my girls in 2008. We planned the shower & bachelorette parties, wrapped favors, ribboned napkins & programs, decorated the reception site and had a BLAST! The 4th time is in 2 weeks, for another of my own girls. So far we’ve planned a shower and bachelorette party, and the few days before we’ll be helping to put together bouquets.

All of my brides have been great, too. I can’t imagine 14…..

I am calling my ladies, “Ladies of Honor” and not choosing a particular one. I am honored to have thier friendship and support. I don’t really like the term “maid” either.
I have only been a bridesmaid once but have been to a few VERY small weddings, and a wedding where I was kind of the bride’s “personal assistant”. Only family was actually in the wedding. I helped set up the church, video the wedding, set out refreshments, clean up after the reception and drive the bride and her mom from their home to the actually wedding. I actually loved being able to help. In no way did I feel like a “slave”. I was invited to stay with the family the whole time and included in the rehersal dinner and some fun “family” photos that weekend.
I was actually going to take a picture of the family when Ms. Bride’s mother said “NO, we need you in the picture, your are a sister by another mother!” Even without the dress I couldn’t have felt more included.

i’ll be in my 3rd wedding next year as a bm. the first one i helped with a lot of the earlier wedding planning stuff since i wasn’t working, so i helped the bride register and kinda kept tabs on how the planning was going. the second i was more hands on with the planning [her dad nicknamed me j.lo! lol] and some of the diy projects [invites, programs]. i sent her a lot of info for her to choose from. this third one, i don’t anticipate having to do too much since it’s in seattle and i’m in cali but i am already in place as the center for calm for the bride-to-be!

I love all the dresses…but I think the navy one with that cute clutch is my favorite! WOW to your friend being a BM 14 times!! Its just like the move 27 dresses! I couldn’t imagine! Though that is a fun movie and weddings can be fun…you def go broke with buying all those dresses!

I was a BM once for my MOH. I got to go dress shopping with her MOH (her sister), her cousin (a BM) and her mom while the bride herself was overseas in Kosovo in the army. She planned most of her wedding from over there! I give credit to her and all brides who plan from afar! It was a wonderful experience…but I wish I could have been there for more events like the bridal shower when she did get home but I live 2 hours from her and at the time I didnt drive yet! But she was an amazing MOH for me!! I LOVE HER SO MUCH! ♥
