Mrs. Taco, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 29, writer/editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 37, editor Engagement Date: May 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: The Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building About Me: I like laughing and talking with good friends over good food and good drink, be it wine, cocktail, or brew. I write and edit things for fun and profit, but I rarely "write" these days without a keyboard and high-speed internets. Favorites include Mr. Taco, my Boston terrier, San Francisco, getting out of town, and the Roaring ’20s. I was kind-of planning a wedding since roughly 2006, when I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" on the WE channel. I ran and didn't look back with a theme I called "urban vintage," and it culminated in the most magical day a taco could ask for.

Post-Wedding Wish List

July 7th, 2010 @ 4:35 pm by Mrs. Taco

With only 30-something days to go (eek!), I started thinking about life once we’re settled back home, post-honeymoon. So, I decided to make a list; not of fantasies, but of full-on plans with legs. This almost-Mrs. is on a mission.

I was also spurred by some married friends who described a post-wedding malaise, once the big project and girly parties are over. This apparently manifests itself in competing, inexplicable bad attitudes. Whatever its roots, or however likely or unlikely we are to “get” this, I’d like to do whatever I can to prevent it. In addition to what will surely remain a feelings-sharing household, activities away from the couch and TV seem like a nice way to do this.

I believe Mrs. Ribbons first posted a list like this, so gracias to her for the inspiration. In no particular order:

1. Tango lessons

  • We were hooked on the dance once we saw it in Argentina, and it seemed like a really fun activity once we could afford it again. We also don’t really do stuff like this (“this” being any kind of coordinated movement to music), so, why not.

2. More weekend camping trips

  • We have a bunch of camping stuff we use maybe twice a year. We also live in Northern California, so there is no excuse.

3. A queen-size bed

  • The cuddle-loving Tacos are comfy in their full-sizer for now. But after some discussion about a mattress upgrade (*snicker*), we thought a bigger frame would be nice, too.

4. Eating and drinking out, like, a lot.

  • Oh, how I’ve missed you, restaurant-trying and delicious drinkies made by someone else.

5. Big trips, not to be confused with weekenders like those mentioned above. New Orleans (for Southern food, cocktails, and the French Quarter) for sure in April 2011 and Southeast Asia in October or November 2011. Also, holy cow, would I like to visit the Harry Potter theme park next summer. Me and BM Jerene are already talking about it.

6. Increase my 401(k) contribution

  • This one is totally boring. But having seen what happens to couples who don’t save enough for their golden years, I’m throwing as much as I can into the Tacos’ retirement fund.

7. Home improvement

  • Also boring, but there are a handful of nagging things we need to complete in our apartment. We want one of these for our bikes, because I’ve been jabbed a few too many times in the hip with a set of handlebars. We want to put up shelves in our bedroom. You know, for all those pictures that can’t go in the living room. Our earthquake kit consists of one small-ish blanket and two jugs of water, so we’re woefully unprepared on that. Speaking of things for which there is no excuse; we live in San Francisco! Our building survived the 1906 earthquake and another biggie in 1989, but we probably shouldn’t tempt fate.

8. Fitness

  • Cardiovascular disease runs in my family, and I have a very difficult time turning off stress-inducing mind chatter. Something must be done! I started doing Bikram Yoga in June because I had a coupon for a good deal. It is (sweaty) and awesome, and I’d love to get better. Once we’re back from the honeymoon, or maybe even post-wedding, pre-honeymoon, I’ll pick a place closer to our house and continue doing it regularly.

What’s on your list? My priorities have stayed roughly the same as compared with pre-engagement, but have yours shifted? How?

Oh man, this is such a good idea. I would LOVE to start a list, but maybe I should wait until it gets closer to my wedding so I don’t get overwhelmed with ANOTHER list of things to do! It’s so great to shift our thinking to life post-wedding (since that is really the important stuff).

You guys sleep on a FULL sized mattress?! This is impressive. We have a queen, and I have a “We need a BIGGER BED” freakout about once every two weeks….

This is a great list, and pretty similar to mine. But I’m TRYING to make myself wait a bit longer until I jump into the swing of things, enjoy being a newlywed and whatnot.

I have one thing on my list (assuming I have managed to fully move out of my apartment by then, this is the longest move in the history of mankind) and that is to get my doctoral dissertation finished. That is all.

…and spring for that king mattress if you can, we did and it is awesome.

@Mrs. Cola: You’re absolutely right, Cola! I am definitely trying to enjoy the moment(s), since my seeming forever engagement is down to a month and a week left. @crayfish: We get that all the time, haha. We do fit on a full-sizer! But we’re both fairly slender and the taller among us (him) isn’t enormous at an even six feet tall.

Definitely upgrade to the queen! We fit on a fullsize, but now that we have a queen we are SOOOO much happier!

This list is great! I love yoga, but I’m still on the fence about Bikram…

This is an EXCELLENT idea! I just hit the 60 days married mark, and I am at a loss as to how to get out of this funk. I spent so much time planning, then nothing- and it’s not like I don’t have anything to do, I just am nowhere near as excited about it as wedding planning.

I do start a 7-week Zumba class on Saturday.

I think I shall make a list myself! Thanks, Taco!

Lovely list! Especially the traveling. I have been begging my husband to go to the Harry Potter theme park with me! He doesn’t seem very excited. **harumph**

Oh man, I’d love to upgrade our full-size bed to a queen! Our list had enough on it with moving and going to school/to a new job. Your list sounds more fun. : )

we were in a full bed for awhile. now we have a king. do we need it? no, probably not, but it’s the one luxury that we gave ourselves. seriously. we’re all about the basics over here. =p we don’t even have a TV. i love your list.
