Mrs. Sand Dollar's Picture
Mrs. Sand Dollar, Houston Age and Occupation: 24, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, Electrical Technician Engagement Date: January 8, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: MacLean Park About Me: I'm a domestic diva down to the core. I heart cooking, sewing, baking, decorating and making sure we have a hand-crafted home. The best part about the wedding is I get to incorporate it all! I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Mr. Sand Dollar and I spend most of our time on DIY projects or traipsing around the outdoors with our two pooches Rory and Juno. I'm looking forward to sharing our journey with all of you!

Starting a Chuppah

Isn’t my photography improving? I absolutely adore this photo! This is me patting myself on the back. But now let’s focus.

I want everyone to know that Hobby Lobby is basically the best store in the world. I’m pretty much planning an entire wedding built on its wares. The latest addition? Backing for the chuppah! I admit that I’ve been slightly worried about it. I didn’t know if I wanted ribbons, or shiny circles I saw in a Martha Stewart Destination Weddings ad. And when I was traipsing around HL to pick up a few more buckets (for chuppah and dance floor pole bases), I spotted these perfect decorative curtains in the same garden section. And for 40% off! Score! They even had everything in our colors—is this serendipity or what?

As the buckets for the base are orange, and the poles will be brown (I don’t know if I ever mentioned that our colors are red, brown, orange & yellow), I picked up two curtains, in yellow and red. Then I snapped up a couple of orange flower garlands to spice things up a bit. I plan on cutting each in half to vary the colors a little more so it’s not so intense in the split. Now I just have to figure out how to cover the top, and it’s time for assembly!

Any suggestions on what to use to as the top?

What did you use as the framework for your chuppah? I want to do something like this, but am not sure where to start.

Since I’m not sure what a chuppah is, I have no suggestions for you. The photos look great, so I’m sure it’ll be gorgeous at your wedding.

Edit: Actually, when I saw the first picture, I thought this was going to be the top! You could sew both ends to a pretty fabric and have a really beautiful chuppah cover!

Although I don’t know if this will go with your overall look my friend had all of her closest friends draw on precut squares of muslin in pima pen or sharpee and then she attached them all like a quilt and had that over head.

I think fabric will win out in the end, but I was hoping to see if anyone thought of something creative. I played around with the idea of chicken wire woven with something, but couldn’t think of what I would weave. Ribbons? Raffia? Please help me out! My brain is fried. And as far as the structure, we have 4 cute Hobby Lobby buckets that we’ll fill with concrete and place 7′ wooden poles we bought from Lowe’s. Then we’ll come up with a top and hang the decorations from the back.
