Mrs. Thimble's Picture
Mrs. Thimble, NYC/Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Actress & Costume Designer (+ day job) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lawyer & Techie Wiz Engagement Date: August 22, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: The Pearl S. Buck House About Me: I’m an easily inspired over-thinker delighted with the process of designing, building, directing and {dare I say} co-starring in the early-autumn affair I’ve been dreaming up. I’m a sucker for trendied-up comfort foods and old family anecdotes; I have an affinity for adjectives, alliteration, eyelet and earl grey; and I live for quality time with family and friends. I never guessed I’d marry my “high school sweetheart", but when it turned out to be my funny, techie, loyal Mr. Thimble I was committed for life. We’re both mid-career transition and ready to move back to small-townish TBD, PA in a pre-wedding flurry of all-good life changes.
About Mrs. Thimble

Now that the sarcasm is out of the way, I can come clean… I went nuts on our registry!

Thimble and Mr. T. Request the Honour of Your Presents... : wedding philadelphia registry Shoppin shoppin

{source… and I mean, sure, I don’t HAVE the items yet but you know what I mean}

I dragged Mr. T to a Crate and Barrel registry party on a Sunday morning in March, we spent a Friday night scanning our wish list in Macy’s Herald Square, and when my mother convinced me to add Bed Bath and Beyond for our guests’ convenience, I spent hours comparison shopping online and finding the best deals at each store for a well-rounded, hopefully reasonable registry.

There will be no want for choice when it comes to shopping for my shower. And, in my defense, Crate and Barrel told us there would be waffles. (There were no waffles, but there was plenty of food, champagne and a free gift [I love that post by Miss Hot Wings]).

There has been plenty of excellent advice offered here in the hive regarding how to approach your registry. My advice is to trust your gut along the way, starting with when to register. Some relatives suggested that we register as soon as we got engaged so they would know what to get us for our engagement party. I personally felt like that was presumptuous of us to expect gifts so early and I thought it would look rude. I just wanted to celebrate in the company of our loved ones! Plus we knew we had two years ahead of us before the wedding and our tastes might change, we might move, etc. After registering, I can see why it would have been fun to start the process that early, but I think we made the right decision. Yes, we did receive gifts at our engagement party- but I love each one, and I now I don’t need to add serving platters to our registry! ;)

Defeated, I waited for our mothers to settle so they could watch us open the gifts… it was pretty late.

Next, I trusted my gut instincts on where to register: I just shopped where I wanted to! I like the fine china and bedding at Macy’s, the cookware and everyday dishes at Crate and Barrel, and the appliances at Bed Bath and Beyond. At first I feared that three stores were too many, but I soon realized it doesn’t really matter—I, for one, enjoy having plenty of options when shopping for my friends’ weddings, and I’m sure our guests will appreciate it, too.

Finally, I gave in to my lifelong expectations of what my registry should be. There are certainly excellent arguments for keeping everything practical and budget friendly. But I had always expected that I’d choose a china pattern when I registered, that I would consider crystal, and I would finally get my hands on those sought after kitchen appliances I may only use twice a year, but I would never buy for myself. Ready to see some items I’m especially exited about?

AND FINALLY, something we really do need for reals:

Thimble and Mr. T. Request the Honour of Your Presents... : wedding philadelphia registry Allclad AllClad

All-Clad starter set from Crate and Barrel- I can’t wait to deglaze these shiny pans!

In other words, I’m pretty stoked about everything on our registry. Even the tiny kitchen gadgets and bathroom towels—but I’ll spare you the slideshow on those items.

What was your attitude towards registering: Apprehensive, or all about it? And is there an item (or 6) you’re crossing your fingers you’ll get?

We only registered in person once, learned our lessons and did the rest online. And I totally agree about not registering too early, we set ours up about 8 mos before the wedding and I had to keep updating it as items were discontinued or our tastes changed.

You made some excellent choices! I love the China pattern and the waterford you choose. You’ll love those for all your life time!

We honest-to-pete only registered for things we superduper needed, so our lists were pretty ridiculously short, but it meant we were genuinely excited about everything, from sheets to spoons.

Actually we do still need sheets. Hmm.

I was all about registering - until I got to Macy’s and realized I hadn’t done enough research and there were tons of options! I’m definitely crossing my fingers for a Kitchen Aid mixer - in cobalt blue!

My pre-FI and I already have a fair amount of kitchen gadgets between us, and since we’ll have a long engagement (together in an apt.), I’m anticipating us collecting a lot more.

So, we’d like to find some way to also register at an outdoorsy-outfitter type store a la Gander Mountain or Cabela. I’ve heard REI has a gift registry. Once I’m actually engaged (lol), I’m excited to register. :) Bring on the presents?

I was a little bit worried about adding too much or too little. I didnt want to look greedy but wanted to have lots of options. I ended up adding alot more than I needed but this is because I hear you can often buy off your own registry at 10% off for up to 1yr after the wedding. Not sure if it is true but that was my reasoning.

we registered at target bed bath and beyond and dillards. hated dillards cause i didn’t have one in NY to register at and we didn’t really like anything there. target and bed bath and beyond were our favorites. we put a lot of stuff on there and we got most of the things we wanted, but my favorite gifts were mostly cooking ones. the le creuset french oven, soy sauce dispenser that was wayyy too much, corn hole game [husband absolute favorite], and the kitchen aid mixer.
